Demon's Souls had notable frame rate issues, particularly in the Valley of Defilement and the later parts of Boletaria when more than 4 enemies were on screen at once.(the on PS3 bit doesn't matter as there are no other options) Though Demon's Souls still had better frame rate and was cleaner and tighter than Dark Souls 1(I assume because DS1 was built as a multi-platform title) DS1 had a much more interesting artistic world that distracted you from the graphical shortcomings though.

I feel like finesing your opponents position is to replicate one of the most important parts of the Souls series that while rarely spoken is subconsciously known, the positioning of enemies and your character based on your build. More than stamina management or even shielding and blocking positioning means the most, by pushing in the video game just enough to gall your enemies into range while exposed would be hard to replicate in a board game so this player influencing of the enemies in the board game is the closest we can get.

@blastvader7 жыл бұрын
Tommy Faust I'm not a massive board game fan but £90/$120 does seem somewhat standard for a game of this type. Also, I think it's the heavy duty printed components that are a large part of the cost. In this case they were all done in Germany so are of a higher quality than might be expected had they been done in China or the like, but that obviously has a cost implication. Also the fact that the thing weighs in at 3.5kg means that transport costs are going to make up a larger percentage of RRP than might be expected. The actual cost of injection molding some PVC figures is probably one if the smaller portions of the overall costs.
@mikeromeo25987 жыл бұрын
This is exactly what I'd expect it to cost. High quality minis, cards and card punchouts, not to mention the work that's gone in to the rules and balance. These types of games are worth the cash

Kim Jong Skill pfff ps3 for 100 dollars? If I ever saw a price that low Id actually buy a next gen console. I doubt that you can buy it from a second hand seller.Or either they give their accounts aswell. Plus you still have to pay for online.

Me and my best friend are going in 50/50 on this bad boy and I'm seriously super stoked, I really liked your clear and concise review, hope to see more content like this in the future. Maybe if you think it's a good idea do a little 2 part series with a couple encounters played out start to finish and a mini boss and a zone boss fight video. I would totally watch you guys play it!

I'm sorry, I have to say it. If you're farming souls in Dark Souls, that's indicative that you're doing something wrong.
@lluisrodriguez22127 жыл бұрын
Matt or maybe you wanna level up cuz u already are lvl 150 or want to buy all weapons and boss armors, dunno
@quetch27 жыл бұрын
So when you have 38 strength but need 40 for the boss weapon you just got, you wait until you level up naturally? You never feel it would be easier to just spent 5 minuets farming, then use the weapon you want to use? Or when you want to get into the SL120 PvP sweetspot, you just play through half the game waiting for it to happen by itself? Or when you need souls to buy titanite chunks to upgrade your latest weapon to +10, you don't speed that up? Get the fuck out of here with your "real fans don't grind" bullshit.
@crasimia77287 жыл бұрын
Matt well I end up farming souls but that's usually only to get to the correct pvp level
@Matt-gh2zm7 жыл бұрын
Consumable souls bridge the gap for when you need a quick level up or two to use a weapon or piece of armor. Farming beyond that is intentionally setting out to break the balance of the game (which was acknowledged when DS2 stopped enemies from respawning after 7 kills)
@lluisrodriguez22127 жыл бұрын
Matt so using what the game gives you to your advantage is breaking the balance of the game? I remember my first time playing pvp for real, going to the forest with Alva and stuff, and I felt very frustrated to be invaded by people with way better gear and equipment. If I wanted to have a chance, I had to farm. And by farming I eventually upgraded the Claymore to +15 and my armor and finally started to do better. So farming is crucial in some situations and it can't be breaking the game balance, because most people only farm to upgrade gear or get to SL120 to do pvp. I get your point tho that if you just go for PVE then yeah farming isn't needed.

Great review... I played the game for the first time last night. I picked up the game pretty quick and felt the same as you. The 90 to 120 min time was well under. We played our first campaign over 5 hours! My group love coop board games and I would like to see more reviews from you.

"Farming souls is as important in dark souls the boardgame as it is in Dark souls" People who grind for souls in a Dark Souls game don't know how to play a dark souls game.

dark souls are my favorite games of all time and i have played through each of them many times. guess what, i know what i am doing and i grind for souls. every time i play it. people who don't farm for souls do not know how to play a souls game. like you didnt fucking farm when you started playing. get the fuck out of here. even if you are good at the game now, you were not good at the start and i guarantee you are forgetting when you sucked at the game .
@All_Ice1177 жыл бұрын
Kyle Peacock Yeah, I kind of farmed at first unintentionally since I would die and had to go through everything again carefully. But yeah, I know how these games work and I know grinding isn't needed. If you got mad because some of us don't do it, ok, it's your own ego being hurt. Also, people say it's very "trial and error" and, therefore, "difficult", but if you're careful and pay attention to your surroundings, it's not as bad as people make it out to be.

I like the boss moveset repeating idea, it simulates in game boss combo's and movesets rewarding people who pay attention, but I feel like it might be a bit too simple? It could be they decided to not overcomplicate bosses since they want the board game to be as easy to understand as possible since the difficulty is going to be a problem already for getting sales. However one thing they could do is have two sets of boss moveset cards with a coin or die that decides which moveset to use for how many turns. Basically giving the boss two combos or movesets they can alternate between you have to keep in mind further simulating the few combos bosses in game have
@luketfer7 жыл бұрын
Probably already been mentioned but you forgot or they removed in the release version (not sure which) the boss 'heat up' mechanic which when a boss hits 50% health, new cards are added in and the deck is shuffled.

I know that this comment is coming a year late, but... Johnny, please do more of these boardgame reviews! This video was quite good, it was enjoyable to watch, it was informative, and it made me want to buy the game... and I haven't even played the Dark Souls video games! My family love board games, we probably have a couple-hundred different ones, so this was right up my street. Thanks!

great video, I almost bit on the kickstarter/indiegogo but was very concerned I would buy this massive and expensive game and me and my friends would either never play it and it would just be boring as hell. The miniatures looked amazing and conceptually it seemed like it MIGHT be fun but I had no idea how well it would play out in practice. Perhaps if I see a good deal for it I might pick it up after all.

Absolutely great video! Good introduction to the game before getting a hands on experience. Enjoyed the structure of your video a lot so keep it up. Would love to see some future video's of some expansions if you got your hands on any of them or perhaps will in the future. I've backed the vanilla game along with the Sif expansion + extra forest tiles. So would love to see your approach and analysis as the game keeps developing, perhaps more expansions will be added we never know... Keep up the work!!
