In the 1970s, Soviet engineers conceived the ideal stealth fighter. It was the middle of the Cold War, and the nation needed a modern, multifunctional fighter.
As Sukhoi developed the next-generation S-57, the company kick-started a new era in aviation for the country. But never did they foresee that the Soviet Union would fall apart before their dream stealth fighter came through.
The cuts in funding and multiple delays dragged the project into the 2000s, but the Sukhoi-57 was still ready to serve its country, albeit in a different shape.
It didn’t matter if the S-57 was conceived 40 years ago; it was more than ready to compete against the finest American aircraft…

@@zombi205more countries run F-35s than 57s exist in their entirety, and f35s actually completed missions, taken off from carriers, etc. 800 f-35s in the US and more being made all the time, problems crop up and are fixed, unlike in Russia, that’s how any new product works - if you have a modern industry - which Russia doesn’t, can’t even make Ladas anymore. New adaptive cycle engines to replace the 135 for the future f-35 fleet to keep up with the NGAD fighters, it’s future planning is already coming together, again compared to 6 initial production 57 with no improvements on the horizon for Russia. Cope harder.

I've seen the Su-57 described as "low visibility" rather than an actual stealth fighter. Its radar cross-section is probably in the region of 1 - 2 m^2, which is much larger than that of an F-22 or F-35.

Su-35 is around 1m so Su-57 has to be smaller than that.

The prototype model T50 has the RCS of 0.1m2 while the serial production model of SU57 has the RCS around 0.01m2 which is an improved model. So yes the improved model of SU57 goes to the stealth category, but still it is not as stealthly as the F35 and F22 which has the RCS around 0.005m2 and 0.0001m2.

You think the American way of producing the F-35 is good? It goes like this... Lockheed Martin 15 years ago: yes, this plane is still not finished, but it can fly, we will start its production and we will fix the "minor" defects as we go! Fifteen years later, hundreds of airplanes built that practically still can't do anything, hundreds of not-so-minor defects, dozens of upgrades paid not by Lockheed Martin but by the taxpayer because... Lockheed Martin isn't stupid... it made a defective product and then for years, and it seems the next decades will be correcting defects that are basically uncorrectable because they should have been corrected during design! Su-57? A test batch that went to testing, every defect is corrected on test maybe a dozen aircraft, testing will last as long as necessary and then serial production will start... sounds like a normal sequence of events, right!?

I watched a recent conversation on KZfaq where a retired American officer stated that Russia was using their advanced fighters by keeping them within Russian airspace while firing missiles that have a range of about 200 miles to take down Ukrainian planes within Ukraine itself. Does that make sense?

Some. Both Russia and Ukraine use Russian planes. In the early days of the war, Russian pilots flying over Ukraine may have had a moment of confusion trying to determine the friend or foe status of the aircraft they encounter.

@@bigrob966 Ukraine doesn't have air force any longer. 90% is downed or destroyed. NATO is sending Soviet surplus airplanes like Slovakian and Check republic mig 29 . And some Soviet helicopters. But they get shut down in the first mission right away. It's the fact I know CNN and Fox News didn't tell you this

They do have air to air missile with that range, so unfortunately yes. It's a way to take out the opposing airforce while staying safe. That said the Russians don't fear the ukraian airforce. They fear the s300 and buks that make fighting close to the front at altitude a death wish. U either fire far away or hug the treeline and hope somebody with a manpad doesn't see u.

People just can't get over the fact that US technology is unparalleled and they have to keep inventing ways that a country that has invested 13x less in the military for the last 40 years somehow managed to surpass it; most such claims have been shot down by the Russo-Ukraine war, but people still linger in that well of stupidity and every once in a while shit out one more.

@@dirtyd2316 onboard INS - inertial navigation system. its old and not very accurate by todays standards but its passive so no signals to be spied on. thats what they should be using but its inconvenient and takes extra effort and navigational skills. also accuracy degrades with rough flying. GPS is much much more convenient but signals can be intercepted tracked and gives away your position and heading and in some cases your home base. i've read this is down to a training issues, but also maintenance and discipline problems with the russian air force. ultimately it compromises their operational security and helps warn air defences prepare ahead of their arrival. 👍 (edit: it was smartphones that were giving away their movements. as mentioned by @alina - GPS on its own is receive only and does not transmit a signal)

I love the looks of the SU-57. It is a gorgeous aircraft. Ain't no way it's stealthy with those exposed engines and rivets. Head to head combat with a F-22, raptor will remain king.

It is the finished product that counts, not the difficulties in production. If the plane fires its missiles at its enemy, then it is in combat, because that enemy can always fire back. It does not matter where it is flying, if it exchanges missiles, it is in combat. It is worth noting that neither the f-22 or f-35 have seen combat in Ukraine, I would think that if the US wants to gain a reputation for its fighters, Ukraine would be a good venue. Most countries are either buying Russian or Chinese fighters and American and French aircraft. The Rafael has a good reputation, worldwide, but that can not be said for the f-35. The f-22 has never been for sale and they are out of production. If I was buying fighters, they would be either Russian, Chinese or French.

I think it's an artifact of our primate brains associating the newest and most capable weapon as kick ass because of its capability, and therefore we associate its visual aesthetics with kick-assery. Nope, that's just downright stupid because a) the pellets would never hit their target because of the plane turning b) missiles almost always lead their targets instead of chasing them, so this would never be useful anyway c) aerial warfare is soon turning into BVR (beyond visual range) engagements instead of dogfights. If the pilot is in a situation where they'd need that then something has already gone very wrong d) where would you even fit it? the back is where the engines are e) unnecessary complexity and cost for basically no return as stated above.

At best, this is a 4.x fighter. Likely a very high 4.x, but not a true 5th gen. Trying to source parts for it now must also be nearly impossible.

I love how they keep referring to this and China’s J-20 as “Stealth Fighters” when they are clearly not that. The Su-57 looks like an excellent air superiority fighter. But it will light up like a beacon on radar. They both lack some critical elements of stealth fighters. The airflow ducting to the engines is straight. Their is a direct line of sight to the planes turbo fans. Everything in the ass end is a radar reflector. From the afterburner nozzles to the tail surface connection points. There is nothing stealth about the cockpit. It’s straight glass into the complex reflective shapes inside. NATO can track these things from 100 miles away. Also just looking at it, you can see it will suffer from the same compressor stall while flat rudder turning issues that plagued the US F-14.

Doesn't seem the Felon is anywhere near as stealthy as the F-22 or even F-35's and they for sure don't want enemy radar's getting a look at it enough to be able to recognize the signature. We didn't sell F-35's to Turkey because they have S-300 systems which would learn what they looked like with regular exposure and compromise future use against hostiles using the same air defense systems. The Felon very well might have the 'record' long range air kill in Ukraine, but that's the missile and not the launching platform that deserves the credit. The US has long range missiles too but Rules of Engagement dictate that we get close enough to verify the target before shooting to avoid civilian deaths. The Russians in Ukraine have no such worries and would gladly shoot down anything flying over Ukraine if they can...military or civilian.

There is also the concept of what is useful range. Long range usually equals heavier missile. That's a handicap in ACM, and it will be less able to track and kill a target.

I've heard the Su-57 was billed more as an "anti-stealth" fighter in the sense that it itself is not very stealthy, but was supposed to compensate for it with an advanced infrared suite that would detect the smallest of heat signatures from other stealth craft, but then that sensor suite never came into existence so it's just an interesting looking parade toy.

Some things people should consider before dismissing the Su-57 Like the Su-57, the F22 has never had an air-to-air engagement (beyond shooting down a Chinese spy balloon). Like the Su-57 the F22 is also an aircraft that was designed 40 years ago...before the internet was a thing. The Su-57 started production in 2019 , the F22 started production in 1996... *THE 90's* . This means the Russians have had 23 years worth of observation and technological innovation to pack into their aircraft, but also means the US Raptors have had 23 years of refinement, training and procedural development, along with ongoing modifications to incorporate new tech into the airframe. The F22 is definitely more stealthy, but it's never really needed that stealth for much, nobody they've been fighting has had much capability of shooting one down even if they could see it on radar. Su-57 is in a sweet spot, it's semi-stealthy but can still manoeuvre and dog fight once it's actually discovered. It's probably as good as the rafale/ eurofighter/ gripen and perhaps even better as an overall aircraft...it's likely a formidable jet fighter.

I've always thought the Su-57 was a pretty good looking aircraft, but it also appears to suffer from the post-soviet era production problems. I would agree with "stealth-like properties," since to my eye there are way too many points of radar reflection all over its airframe. The question is, is it stealthy enough to shake off radar guided missiles fired from the air or ground? I'd say probably not. Also the fact that they are touting it's laser anti-IR missile system leads me to believe that it puts out a lot of heat. Hence that's the weapon that scares them them most. In contested skies between a couple dozen (at best) SU-57s and several wings of F-35's and a few F-22s, not to mention an equal number of JAS-39 Gripens, Typhoons, Rafales, and butt-loads of F-15s, F-16s, and FA-18s, I know where I'd put my money. Sure Russia has other fighters, but the difference in quality is paramount. One-on-one I think the SU-57 would have difficulty with an F-15E, and would be utterly outmatched by a flight of three of any of the others I mentioned.

Yea the "stealth" to my understanding is best from the front. And yea they still have having issues getting the engine that has the power needed to hit the capabilities it was designed for. So i cannot imagine the engine development has undergone any kind of thermal dissipation. but seeing China's J-20 program is surpassed the su-57 program by miles is just kinda shows the issues they faced developing this. That being said, it has a great flight profile is is a super gorgeous plane but it was designed for dogfighting era in an era where dogfights barley happen. Sad but i just think this plane came a little late to be that relevant.

The SU-57 would have been a game-changer if it had entered mass production in the late 90s or early 2000s like they originally planned, but by the time Russia actually builds enough of them to fill a squadron it'll be functionally obsolete.

You don't know where and how it is used. This is war of attrition, mainly mobie artillery battles and Russia has like an order of magnitute advantage in terms of volume or number of rounds used. Helicopters would probably be way more useful here. And isn't it a good chance for US to test F-35 against real modern air defense and real air-force? I mean Russians won't see it and won't know what hit them right? Right? Lets send F-35 and we will see if it is really stealthy as they claim.

Considering Russia has a smaller economy and spends wayyyyy less on aircraft development than the US, its very impressive that they have continued to build aircraft that can still somewhat compete with modern equivalents. People always say the f22 and f35 are superior, and realistically they should be. The development cost for the f35 was $412 billion on its own!

These cylindrical engine sections and nozzles are extremely non-stealty. A circle has always a part of it that is perpendicular to anydirection a radar beam would come from.

Radar also "flows" around the circular surface and return back. The F-22 and F-35 noses have angles on the sides to break up this flow.

A VERY Important thing - Su-57 radar cross-section is 1.0 square meter. F-22 radar cross-section is 0.0001 square meter. Su-57 has a radar signature 10,000 times BIGGER ! Su-57 is NOT a stealth fighter AT ALL !!

Honestly the F35 was never designed for close range "dogfighting" in the first place its meant to stealthily fire from BVR and get out without anyone seeing its there many 4th and 4.5 gen aircraft have better performance than the F35 outside of stealth , Eurofighter , Rafale , Gripen and so on will out maneuver the F35 on a 1v1 close range fight !

Yawn... Apparently, the "geniuses" hiding behind "Dark Skies" consider their viewers total idiots and/or too lazy to check the actual facts. Let's see what you'll find if you take a bit of an effort and scout through google/wikipedia and "all of the sudden" you'll find that: 1. The SU-57 program was started in 2002, not "concieved in 1970"... 2. Su-57 was ACTUALLY deployed (not "scared to deploy") in Syria and is being actively used in Ukraine, unlike "according to some uknown/unnamed analyists doubting that". You don't have to take a word for what is stated in the wikipedia and cross-check the facts further by finding even video/image footage of the use of Su-57 in the mentioned countries. Sure, developing a modern aircraft is not a road paved with roses only. Take a look at the F22/F35 programs, were they all a total success? Of course, no. But no one would doubt that ultimately both programs achieved their goals. And only someone in total denial would reject that argument or some "dark in the sky" cheap propagandist would make a claim of such a program being a total disaster...

First time saw this craft in the game Ace Combat Assault Horizon, I thought it was a wonder plane back then LoL. It is beautiful at the very least. Seems like there's just one problem that keeps popping up, "lack of funding". I knew when I saw Top Gun Mav that the cannon is not on the left side as shown in the movie, thats a mistake. The cannon is on the right side. Man the rudders are sooooo adorably small on this thing. Wish the F22 had all moving rudders.

Indeed! This plane was one of the cooler-looking ones in Ace Combat, but the fact that the footage is playing in Arcade Mode (the ailerons' [side to side] movement are relative to the camera and not the airplane) is irksome. Also, the most impressive plane won't win if you can't afford to build more and the parts and pilot are sub-par due to corruption at every level of production.

What I’ve read elsewhere, is that the SU-57 is more of a 4.5 generation craft than a true 5th gen model. And, of course, that’s assuming that everything works as stated. You really have to wonder though. If it’s so advanced, with such excellent anti missile capabilities, why aren’t the Russians using it in Ukraine to show just how good it is. Makes one wonder if they aren’t so certain if their claims, doesn’t it?🇺🇸🇺🇦

I'm not a fan of Russian belligerence, but I've always had a soft spot for Russian/USSR aircraft. I wish there was any reason whatsoever other than war to build such fast, sexy aircraft. Maybe in the future, Red Bull air races will use F-22s and Su-57s, and maybe some J-20s.

Im sure everyone here knows- thats not a true 5th gen. When they moved 2 airframes to South Odessa- India was able to track it from over 200 miles away. Those engine cal's have too many straight edges and right angles and every one of those fasteners that are exposed are magnets for RADAR. Russia also doesnt have composite materials that can deflect LADAR. Nothing is truley stealth- but this is barely a 4.5 gen. Im sure it handles WAY better than the F22- but thats NOT the point of a stealth fighter. If maneuverability and speed were all you needed for a slick 5th gen stealth- the Eurofighter would be all the west needs for air dominance...

It lead to the only superpower in the world to own bits of another superpowers stealth technology and probably using that knowledge to build the Felon (which would explain a lot about it's performance as a stealth aircraft).

If the SU-57 can do what it says it can do then I would put more normal missiles & bombs on it and send it close to Ukrainian targets and use the slow unstealthy planes to shoot the fancy long range missiles from far away. The fact that it's not happening means the su57 can't do what the Russians are saying it can do.
