The way she says “I am twenty-five years old” sounds like she’s trying to reassure herself. Feels like a coping mechanism after a childhood of constant invalidation.

It definitely is 😅 I didn't grow up in a household quite like this. My parents at least took care of me, and my father is a physician so he wasn't one of those kinds like "you're coughing up blood? Drink this lavender oil and let's pray to God that he places his healing hands on you." I knew kids like this though. So compared to them, I had it good. But they were controlling, and bigoted, and it took me a while to realize that the reason my feelings about my relationship with them were so complicated is because it wasn't that they didn't love me. That was the part that hurt the most. They loved me, but they were too indoctrinated to look at how they were hurting me. I got out of the bigoted religious mindset. They didn't. Where I broke free from that, they chose not to. Jesus was an awesome guy. I think he would be horrified at what many "Christians" have done in his name. If my parents weren't "conservative Christians,", they would probably be my greatest supporters. That's the part that really sucks.
@MistyNightASMR

@@platypustaco Yeah, Jesus called out the Pharisees (religious leaders) for thinking that they were oh-so pious when they were really just jerks wearing religion to look like good people. Really just virtue signaling. I grew up in a Christian home but had no idea how bad some of the subcultures of Christianity were until within the last year. I've been addicted to hearing about some of the awful teachings that are spread in the "evangelical church" as well as criticisms of why they aren't actually Biblical. There's one podcast who does this (the Bare Marriage podcast on a KZfaq channel by Sheila Wray Gregoire), and I just listened to some episodes this week about a woman who said the same thing you did: She was severely negatively effected by the indoctrination she received from her parents, who probably loved her but were so indoctrinated themselves that they couldn't see how they were hurting her. She also saw how wonderful Jesus was by reading the Bible and realizing that Jesus was nothing like what her community claimed he was like, and she was saved from her abusive marriage because she was eventually given the insight to recognize the abuse, and the courage to leave. I'm sorry you had to go through that and I can only imagine the loss you feel of having "lost" the loving parents you should've had because of all this. I wish you all the best on your healing journey, and I'm happy for you that you are able to see who truly Jesus truly is--that the "church" didin’t completely erase the truth of him wih their problematic teachings

Whilst mine wasn't religious trauma, I have CPTSD from my childhood and it's still fucking with my head at age 27. I truly feel connected to Darlene and how much fear and courage it takes escaping a hellish home environment after there's been so much trauma. Wasn't expecting to see so many relatable aspects in this video! Stepping into 'normal' environments in adulthood feels incredibly frightening as not being allowed to have a sense of self/voice your own opinions massively reduced my self-esteem. Not being taught resilience or emotional regulation skills makes everything so intense and the world truly can feel like a terrifying place when your perception of people has been skewed by loved ones all throughout childhood. Thank you SO much for this character, I truly hope Darlene gets the happy, beautiful life she deserves.

Jeezus, I hope you're doing ok now, don't miss out on life because of fear, get involved with things you like, your only in your 20s once, and by 27 I was touring the US playing music professionally, I hope you don't look back at life when you're older and regret things, because life happens very fast, and don't let the trauma of growing up stop your adult life

I get what you mean mine is both religious and just general neglect stuff but I had to learn that people wont drop me the second I become an inconvenience way too many times. It was also a surprising lesson but now that I think about it kinda weird that it wasnt an intuitive thing but I just now after like a month realized my partner is with me because they actively like me instead of being here because I hadn’t become inconvenient yet. Its been both a very nice journey and very stressfully frustrating trying to learn autonomy and developing a stable sense of self

I live in a city very close to a F-LDS cult complex. We see a fair few people escape, but our police force doesn’t like to get involved in it. A 13 year old girl recently “ran away” (escaped) because she was going to be married off to a 50 year old leader. She made it to a youth shelter and told them everything. The sexual abuse, the mental abuse, the physical abuse, the religious abuse, the slavery. She was free for two days. She was hunted down by men of the cult who kidnapped her. The police did nothing because she was a run away. Her body was found a week later.

As a plot twist it amuses me that after a 43 minute slow-burn compelling drama build-up with an oddly memorable cast of characters finding their own strength and turning against 'Daddy' Billiard, he's actually undone by just assuming his son Deut is cool with his shenanigans, and thusly grasses himself up to Deut who with a weary disapproving sigh just reaches for the phone to the Cop-Shop and IRS.

I can't believe a comedy sketch is making me cry, but I grew up in an insanely strict mormon household where I was only allowed to interact with other people at church and was never allowed to leave my parent property if they weren't taking me to church or the doctor, and I had significantly restricted internet access, and the only reason I had internet access at all was because we had a family computer that I made another windows profile on and I would use it in the middle of the night and then log out and hide it before day time. I grew up with so much guilt and pain because my father was a physically and emotional abusive narcissist who made me feel like I was worthless while I cleaned, cooked, sewed, and raised his children for him. I was expecting to laugh but this hit a little too close to home.

I was homeschooled in a sort of Mormon household (my family went in and out of the church), and the answer is, **very** vulnerable. I knew from my mom that Men Are Bad (TM), but I didn’t want to believe that, so I tried making friends with everyone. I was so excited to be allowed to have friends. I knew to stay away the bad-boy types and frat bros (again: Men Are Bad (TM) and will r@pe you from behind a bush due to uncontrollable lust!) but, because I hadn’t been allowed to use the Internet before college, I didn’t know about more insidious ways men can in the 21st century can be harmful. I ended up meeting a heavily redpilled man. His misogynistic ideas fit weirdly well with my own internalized misogyny. After he SAd me, I convinced myself that I must have tempted him (I don’t believe that anymore) and decided to become his girlfriend, since I thought I was damaged goods and that I needed him. I know Stockholm syndrome is considered to not be a real condition, but I don’t know how else to sum up what I felt. It’s been 8 years, and I’m doing much better. I’m dating a non-binary lesbian now! We’re really happy.

@@nattryyann Christianity as a whole is a cult based off of rules and money laundering- sincerely a person who was born into a baptist family, saw every kind of "Christian" and went to school in a cement church basement in Lupton Michigan :) religion with rules will always be a cult spirituality within God is completely different. Just don't label it literally just pray to whoever the fuck you want but why the hell do you have to label yourself a Christian and cherry pick out of the Bible that was written by a guy who hates God.😂😂😂😂😂😂😂,,, p.s seven sea scrolls are still missing from the Bible, so we literally have no idea what the fuck we're meant to be doing or worshiping or obeying you wanna know why because earth is a karmic place like purgatory and we were put here by whoever the fuck to get rid of it why do you think they would give us rules on how to do that, we have to figure that shit out ourselves and if you stay in a organized religion, you will never be on your own life path. Good luck with your karmic cycle.

It would be a joy to befriend this character, once you calmed her down and reassured her of acceptance. Showing her the world and experiencing everything anew through her eyes. Getting to join in her excitement over finding new things she loves.
