Hello friends!
Here in my corner of coastal New England we have been some unseasonably cold summer days. This particular weekend was full of fog, misty mornings and believe it or not, sweater weather. I think I've just fallen even more in love with living here. I don't want you to get the wrong idea and think I'm trying to rush fall. I love summer with my whole heart, but when the weather is like this, can you really expect me to not learn into my autumn enthusiast side? I just couldn't help it. So I hope you enjoy this vlog of all the spooky summer activities I did to celebrate a day of everything summerween 👻 Ghost stories, pumpkin hot cocoa and pumpkin bread, misty seaside cliffs, gothic mansions and an evening stroll through my local cemetery. I hope you enjoy watching it as much as I did filming it.
p.s. I usually spend 3-5 days filming a video but for this one I did it all in one day. If you notice it doesn't feel quite up to par with the rest of my videos that is probably the reason. I wanted to push myself and see what I could create in 1 day of filming vs. almost a week of filming. I hope you still enjoy it 😊

I kind of hate summer. I get seasonal depression in the summertime. Where I live, it gets too hot. 🔥 🥵 Likewise, Autumn is my absolute favorite season. I have a list of favorite things to do to help me get through the heat of summer. I start it on July 1st.

I find beauty in summer...the fresh berries, lightning bugs, and thunderstorms but every year just gets unbearably hotter and hotter. Now, for me, summer is basically a countdown to autumn.

Desi girl, what state do you live in? I didn't realize you were so close to the New England coast. Hmmm. Oh and I love the way you escape this crazy world. I have been craving autumn sooo much (never cared for summer) that I have been adding twig wreaths etc. trying to achieve a sort of Hocus Pocus/ Practical Magic kind of kitcheny theme. I do love the vibe but don't want to get dark, I am a proud follower of Christ, just love the woodsy cottage vibe maybe? 😮

I’ve been having trouble building up to august (and trust that august itself will be difficult for me) because that’s the month of my boyfriend’s death anniversary. I miss him dearly each and everyday but summer tends to cause me strife in general because despite my favourite season being winter, his was always and will always be summer. The whole season is a reminder of what I’ve lost, yet your videos have shown me love and beauty surrounding the season beyond what my boyfriend already encouraged me to find. I can’t wait to watch this video over and over to remind myself that I can take a moment away from that bittersweet summer I’m slowly growing to love, and to take a moment in a season more comfortable. Less challenging. You always make me so happy and inspired Desi, and I appreciate the kindred spirits across the world that gather to you like old friends from a far away land. Thank you :)

I’ve been fighting a seasonal depression, despite it making no sense since it’s summer, but I always do - and they way I fight it, this year and every year, is to make my own “autumn” and I’ll just be 100% honest and say that I watched all of your Autumn and winter videos and it helped. It really did. So I love that this is a “pretending it’s fall” video. 💕

I have always gotten seasonal depression in the summer and no one could understand why. Now, as an adult, I keep the vibe of my house autumn all year except for Christmas. It has really helped. 🧡

Hi! I don’t know you and we probably will never meet in person but I just wanted you to know: We are all just humans, after all. It’s ok to feel overwhelmed, dissociated, depressed, angry, sad, scared… It’s normal. It’s hard and painful but in the end, it leads you to yourself. To your stronger, braver, more empathetic self. It makes you evolve as a Soul, it makes your heart grow bigger. I don’t know what made you have a restless night. But whether it’s just an uncomfortable pillow or something really serious, please, never give up and lose hope. Just be patient. Be careful. Be patient WITH YOURSELF AND OTHERS. I adore how you romanticize every little moment. I often have these little moments of scenarios in my head of how I want things to go and how I'll feel while doing them. I loved this video. The scenery was breathtaking, and, I felt like I was right there. I never thought that anyone else enjoyed visiting cemeteries, I too, have a favorite reading spot in the cemetery where my family is. I sit under a cedar tree that is said to be over 150 years old, and read my books aloud. Nothing more peaceful.

If you haven’t read Kate Morton yet, I feel confident you’d adore her. One of her biggest influences is du Maurier, and she loves to tell stories about the layers of time in grand old houses. Not fully spooky, but definitely mysterious with her “why dunnit” motifs. My personal favorite is The Clockmaker’s Daughter (audiobook read by “Anna” of Downton Abbey is *chef’s kiss*), but The Forgotten Garden is the perfect grown-up story for lovers of The Secret Garden.

I loved Mary Downing Hahn's writing! I read Wait Til Helen Comes as a 5th grader and I STILL adore it and feel the creepy vibes 37 years later!!! I am just now getting around to reading more of her work and while it is in the 'juvenile' section of my library, something about her style stays with me after each book I read! And you're right, sometimes I like the YA stories better- they don't have to rely on gore or sex- they utilize more potent storytelling and that's what I'm here for! Thank you for one of the best videos ever. You really outdid yourself!!

Mary Downing Hahn and Betty Ren Wright (The Dollhouse Murders) were both elementary school favs of mine too! For some reason I always associate them with Summer, bc I can remember coming in after playing outside in the sun all day, taking a bath and climbing between cool, crisp sheets to snuggle up with these ghost stories (or reading them on family trips) ✨️ As I got a bit older, I also really enjoyed the Fear Street books and LJ Smith books (early 90s when they had all just came out).

Ooo I used to love reading Mary Downing Hahn! It’s been awhile, but my old spooky favorites were “The Old Willis Place,” “Wait Til Helen Comes,” and “The Doll in the Garden”. Recently bought a book called “Help the Witch” and I think it’s a modern take on old folk stories, but I haven’t read it yet. Love the spooky vibes!

We have finally had a lot of rain and this week is going to be the same starting tomorrow! 🥰 I have been in a fall mood since the beginning of summer. I can't explain it. It's like a calling to the heart. While working in my studio, I have all your autumn videos playing😂 I can't help it! I have to thank you. Your videos I look forward to. It's like waiting for your favorite TV/movie series to release their new season! I get the video ready, get a cozy cup of coffee, a pad of paper to right down book recommendations and get settled on the couch and hit play.
