I got both nylon and steel string guitars. Both have their merits. As he said the steel string is more versatile, but when it comes to finger picking I vastly prefer my nylon string guitar as it gives a more mellow sound which is better fit for that type of playing

I love the sound of nylon. Seems you hear the music more,. The strings are less intrusive and mellow, whereas with the steel string you get a metallic ping sound.

I think the nylon string sound better when they're being picked, but steel strings sound better when they're strummed. Edit: the guitars sound good both ways depending on what type of music you play with them

Somehow for the first time, hearing steel and nylon side by side like this, I realize that I simply love the sound of nylon strings. Nylon just sounds like ... aching for the truth, knowing you can never really grasp it, but you still want it so badly. Steel sounds like you already know... but you really only think you do.

For me personally I prefer Classical Guitars. I just love the sweet and mellow tone of Nylon strings, chords sound really beautiful on Nylon. At the end of the day it all comes down to preference, no Guitar is better then the other. You play any genre on both Guitars, I recommend people should play both Classical and Acoustic Guitars. You don't want to limit yourself to one type of Guitar.

First guitar I ever owned I was 12 and my dad got it for my birthday. It was an Arianna nylon string. didn't pick up a pick for about 3 years. I can't tell you how 53 years later how much I love playing guitar. God bless all from Nashville, Tn.

My first guitar in my teens was a steel (bronze) string, but I also owned nylon string guitars. By the time I reached my mid 20s, I bought a nice quality Guild steel/ bronze string guitar that's been with me for the last 40 years. I've been tempted to upgrade to a higher quality Martin, but my heart and soul and playing hands are melded to this one guitar. It's been with me longer than and friend or wife. Nylon strings are warmer, smoother and gentler, great for folk and ballads as well as classical and spanish/flamenco oriented playing. I am reminded that one of my favorites -- Carlos Santana -- has said that the only acoustic guitar he will play is c OK assical nylon. For everything else, he plays electric. Buy steel strings are also brighter and clearer sounding. Harmonics played on a steel sound like the ringing of a bell. And, as you mention, it's the most versatile acoustic for playing all different genres of music. You can still play classical and Spanish flavored songs as well as gentle folk ballads. But you really can't play rock and roll on a nylons stringed classical guitar. Not and be authentic anyway. Thanks again though for another excellent gu I tar review. The only complaint I have for your videos is that they make me want to buy a museum full of beautiful, gorgeous toned guitars I have no money for. I'm lucky 7f I can afford the gas to drive to the local music store to drool over them.

I've had both steel + nylon string guitars, both good and mediocre. But when both are good, they sound so good together. It's also great to have an extra instrument for a guest to play with you.

Nylon classicals are the best to start training, including basic pieces like the Romanza played or Lagrima. The fretboard width, fret spacing and the softer impact of nylons develops good hand flexibility, stretch and positioning. You can see that you are trained in classical and that your left and right hand positioning and dexterity carries over to electrics and acoustics.

people talking about which one's better for what music, then there's me who's first guitar was some cheap nylon I got as a kid and started learning heavy metal riffs on it

The obvious answer/solution is to get one of each, as the different tonal qualities are appropriate to different tunes.

If you are starting and have never picked up a guitar, I recommend nylon since it is far easier to play and you won't get discouraged. Steel strings are great if you start with electric since the difference is not great enough to deter you when you switch. Steel stringed acoustic for beginners is probably one of the biggest deterrents. The instrument has high action and is ready to fight those beginner errors, while an electric will allow you to play far sooner and you can focus on more important things like tone

I like more the sound of steel while strumming, but I love the feel that nylon produces.

I’d go with steel string when its strumming.Fingerstyling is more of a nylon string because of how peaceful the tune is.

My first guitar was an inexpensive nylon model. It was easier on the fingers for the first couple of years while I learned chords, etc. The neck is usually wider at the nut than a steel string, so going from nylon to steel made me feel like I was fat-fingering a lot of chords. It's something you get used to. Glad I started out that way.

I personally prefer the sound of the classical/nylon string guitar. That Spanish/romantic/sit-around-a-campfire sound just has a lot more soul than the steel string guitar, in my opinion.

Finger picking sounds beautiful on nylon strings. I think any serious guitarist would have both.

Nylon versus steel string guitars is like comparing apples to oranges to me. It's almost like they're two completely different instruments, not in terms of a learning curve for chords and scales, but for feel, sound and intonation. And it depends on what style of music you're into -- classical and flamenco for the nylon-string versus country and blues for the steel-string. There are exceptions, but that's the general rule. I would just as soon say get both so you have more sounds at your disposal.

I always recommend nylon strings to a newbie. It doesn't hurt so much to mash the strings down, and they therefore won't become discouraged by practicing. It'll take a bit longer to build up callus, but on nylon, it's not serious anyway.

The first question is what type of music you wish to play, primarily. I'm nylon because I love latin music (samba bossa nova, flamenco, cuban...) and classical.

I learned playing on a steel stringed guitar, and it was quite tough on my fingers at first. Once i got slightly decent at it, I tried my friend's nylon guitar, and it was a piece of cake to play. Same with my electrical guitar. it's even easier than a nylon one. So all i can say is, if you can play steel string, adjusting to other guitars is no problem. Can't say anything about the other way around.

Putting it very simple: Steel - Feels like car with glossy finish. Nylon - Car with a matte finish obviously. Player's preference is all that matters, not a thing to debate... period

The steel string rings out more than the nylon. I like the thump of the nylon strings . Both sound good but I don't have a classical. Going to get one first chance I get.

The steel string sounded almost 'rude' after hearing the nylong string guitar fingerpicked... Im practicing on a steel string right now, but I think Im going to buy a nylons string soon. I want to play flamenco and classical so its just the best choice obviously, but I think Ill end up using it for all styles. I love the warm muddy tones that come out of the nylon strings

Nylon is more versatile, and at a higher level, way more demanding technically. Its meant to be played the authentic styles, Flamenco, Classical, ..etc, while Steel is more akin to rock and folk music.

Maybe the choice is could be answered as "what do you need it for?" Because for example I'm from Argentina and I play Folk Argentinian music, and despite the sound of the steel strings is lovely to me, I'd not use it to play "Chacarera", it just won't sound as good as a nylon strings. As many of you, I love guitars.

I like both types, but i'll say that i prefer black nylon strings on a classical/spanish guitar, because they have a slightly more crisp sound compared to white nylon.I would also like to pont out that for beginners, playing bar chords on a nylon string guitar is a little more difficult due to the fretboard being completely flat, where steel string guitars (western) have a slightly curved fretboard. In the end, however, with ample practice it shouldn't be a big problem.

I agree 100%. I would like to add that you can brighten the tone of a nylon-string guitar a little by switching to black nylon strings.

I own both and I like both. Darrell's assessment of these guitars is spot on. I began learning on the nylon string classical guitar; it really helped me as a beginner for the reasons Darrell mentioned.

All debates aside, the transition of both strings is beautiful.

The tone of the Nylon is Classical based and has a Tone for softer music, and the steel string has a longer sustain for Pop, Country, or Rock music.

Very interesting even though I have played for 40 years. Nice presentation.

For fifty years I have played flamenco guitars which tend to have a more treble sound than a traditional classical guitar and sound much more like a steel string guitar without the long sustain. The flamenco guitar also has a cutting strumming or Rasgueado. This makes the guitar very cool in rock settings that I have brought it to.

after having own both types plus electric guitars and played bass also I strongly believe the hardest one to play is the steel string guitar, feels very very hard for my fingers for some reason. I had a music teacher that used to play even rock on a electroacustic nylon guitar and sounded amazing, definitely an underestimated instrument
