Alternative internet infrastructure for the coming zombie apocalypse. All that and more this time on Hak5!
This time on the show Darren speaks at the blog.crashspace.org hackerspace in Los Angeles about Internet freedom and alternative Internets for the coming zombie apocalypse. It's all fun and games until there's no route to host. Whether it's a natural disaster, oppressive government or zombie invasion the hacker community should prepare for certain Internet doom. From Sneakernet to Pack Radio one thing is certain -- mankind needs a secure and free infrastructure for global communication. And cat photos.

These are two separate and distinct things. When I talk about wanting the Internet to be "free" I mean free as in freedom. We are losing our online freedoms, and that's why I got involved in building mesh networks. But you're right, the cost of access is a big problem as well. It does cost money to operate that infrastructure, but the price for access is a steep barrier to entry for people around the world, including millions of Americans. That's why I advocate for Internet as a utility.

What I'm saying is that the Internet should be a public utility like electricity or phone service. It would be regulated by the government, and there would be guarantees of a minimum level of service at regulated prices. However it's still being operated and paid for by the private sector. Your fiber optic infrastructure won't go anywhere for customers who can afford to pay for it.

What a lot of Americans don't realize is that we pay higher prices for worse Internet service than almost any other country in the world. Mesh networks aren't a fantasy, they've been functioning around the world for decades. At last years International Summit for Community Wireless Networks the groups from the USA all had the same complaint: ISPs are actively hostile toward community mesh projects. By contrast, they are often active supporters of such projects in Europe.

There was no actual "content" at all in this show. even the hack space talk was just him introducing himself. Well at least he managed to get in an advert. Way to hack your wallet Darren ;)

Omg man get over yourself! This WHOLE show contained not a single word of info, substance, or news! Everytime I watch your show the personal glorification segments where you ramble on for hours about how long you have been using computers and how fantastic you are for knowing about 2600 Hz and old school phreaking with a blue box. Which was like the first "hack" ever discovered, WAY before you were born im sure! And yes, we all had slow modems too. Mine was 400 baud! Can u offer us any content?
