The Dartmoor Way runs in a circular style from Ivybridge around the edge of Dartmoor National Park for 108 miles. There is also a cycling route, but the hikers path is a route boasting wide open moorlands and deep dark wooded valleys, feral ponies and glistening waterfalls; around every corner there is a new discovery to be made.
Abbie set out to walk the route in early spring with the goal of overcoming their fear of wild camping. Abbie faced some hiccups along the way, as well as hail showers, thunder and lightening, frightening mental health blips, and the odd long stretch of road walking. At the risk of oversharing, we can say that Abbie has done plenty of wild camping since, and this trip was the cornerstone to their new relationship with the set up.

Abbie you do really good work in highlighting mental health issues. Getting outdoor and excercise is really good to help anyone with mental health. Sadly that's not possible for a lot of people in the country. Living in a 24 storey tower block, antisocial behaviour, drug dealers, music all through the day, no noise insulation, no sleep and more. I have seen what it can do to someone's mental health. Abbie you and I are able to go out every day, walk, camp and travel and it makes a big improvement in our overall health. Keep up the good work. I know that feeling of insecurity, when wild-camping alone. The first time I wild-camped solo was in a woodland in Scotland. Every noise woke me up, from the creaking of the trees to the sounds of wildlife and rain and it was pitch black dark. I was nervous and I hated myself for it. Logic told me that people are the only thing to worry about, but I was not reassured. I had to force myself to stay out and not go back to the campsite where we (my family) were staying, only three miles away. In the morning, I ridiculed myself as I looked around the beautiful spot where I had chosen to camp and wondered why I had felt so threatened. I downplayed my fears to my family, who thought I was mad, because I wanted to feel at home in the woods so badly. You are more confident. At least you are not afraid to say you were afraid. Respect! My family still think I am mad, including the next generation, but the only fear I have, these many years later, is that I will be asked to move, because in most parts of England you are not supposed to wild-camp. Your walk around Dartmoor looks perfect - a top walk to hammock camp - which I hadn't imagined. Bliss! This might very well be my August walk, although I was thinking about doing The Ridgeway... I might do both! This was a great watch. That third wild-camp, 'the happy, sunset camp', had me grinning from ear to ear. Well done!

@@mickjames1609 The first time I slept in just a bivy was another milestone for me. Now, tents make me feel claustrophobic. The thing about hiking and wild-camping, for me, is that there is no time limit on your walk; no pace which is important and not even a final destination. I have the time to 'stand and stare'. I hike from woodland to woodland and now, hammock camping floats my fleet!

Abbie, you are truly an inspiration ! I have just watched the whole of this film without fast forwarding a single second [ apart fom the ads obviously ! }. My wife and i have watched a lot of your films, with the intention of seeing them all, and think you do what you do so well. The way you share your inner dialogue and verbalise your struggles and challenges is so brave and so amazing and we love it that you don't feel the need to swear whilst doing so. Sometimes it can be difficult when there are so many bad things happening caused by people having a negative impact in the world, but to know that someone like you exists is very heartwarming and fills us with hope for the future. All the best in all you do.

Your videos really bring the emotions of exploring a trail to home. I completed my first long distance walk with my Grandad when I was 16 and we did many after that including Coast to Coast and backpacking the Pennine Way. Sadly this year he has been diagnosed with Parkinsons and his walking days are behind him. I've since moved to Cumbria but neglected getting back out. But this news really gave me thought and I've found a bunch of circular walks that marks off the Wainwrights. So I've been getting my gear back together and getting sorted to get started on them over the next few weeks with each peak and trail being a time of remembrance and contemplation. This channel over the past few years has been a real help in me wanting to get back out too.Thank you.

If you watch this video and want to come and walk on Dartmoor - PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE do your research on the wild camping rules and locations on Dartmoor. Whilst its the only place in England you can legally wild camp, you can't do it everywhere. This is a really sensitive issue at the moment as a hedge fund manager from London has bought part of the moor and is trying to challenge the legislation that enables wild camping to take place. There are plenty of details on the National Park Authority website including a map which tells you where you can/can't do it - sadly even Abbie doesn't get it 100% right in her pitches in this video. Please respect the rules for those of us who live locally and camp when we can, the challenge to our ability to camp is yet another threat to the things we all love doing, and your help obeying the rules will make it less easy for them to challenge :) Great video Abbie, nice to see your trip. My wife and I did a double take when we drove past you in Lydford, but didn't realise it was you until too late.

As somebody who’s dad held a partners position in one of the established broking firms in the City, it would have been lovely to hear that “Hedge Fund Manager buys part of Dartmoor and spends money on providing facilities for Wild Campers”, as opposed to what’s actually happening......very sad indeed!

@@tomdauben no, I absolutely got where you were coming from, Tom. We have some acreage ourselves (elsewhere) but it’s let to a local farmer on a peppercorn rent. Owning land is one thing but along with custodianship comes responsibility and for newer owners, there seems to be a huge disconnect between understanding what that land does for the environment, the local populace the wider national picture. I sincerely hope that things are resolved amicably and for the benefit of all?

The oldest and strangest emotions of mankind is fear, and the oldest and strangest kind of fear is fear of the unknown 👍 you'll be fine up on them moors, if your afraid of people, they won't look to take to the moors to come and give you hassle, they'll be down in the towns and cities, the moors are your safety net, your place of escape. Something is obviously kicking in at that point where you feel vulnerable, it could be something you can't see but subconsciously you spotted it, it's going to be a perceived threat and not an actual threat. You realized at that moment your alone and there's nobody about, so if someone does come what do you do ? If someone does come, they'll be like you, enjoying the uplands, it'll be ok ❤️

I wild camped with a friend this year but have yet to take the plunge and wild camp solo and I know I will be terrified! Well done Abbie on pushing through the fear and just doing it. Little Bobby trotting along in his little coat melted my heart!

That was brilliant. Your commentary, a combination of informative interesting facts and appreciation of nature, history and the landscape, is fascinating. Ahhh good old dartmoor.. The most miserable place to spend any of your army career. As a civvy it's great, on exercise, it's hell on earth 😂. But such a stunning area all the same. What an adventure, you did incredibly well. Especially in April with the cold weather and random snow fall. It looks like a tough trail but very rewarding, with stunning scenery and countryside. You definitely showed your resourcefulness throughout, even in the more challenging moments. And the lady who allowed you to pitch up on her land, got to love a trail angel 😇 The kindness of strangers ☺️ I’ve only managed two nights of consecutive wild camping, it’s not easy and it does push one’s limits. Congratulations on completing the Dartmoor Way, thank you for your honesty and authenticity. I really enjoyed your film and appreciate how long this must have taken to edit. Welcome back Abbie, I have missed your longer hike over the Covid Break. Admittingly I have not hike the South of England restricting myself to the Lake District, C2C and Pennine Way. Now being over 65 I think its safer if I stay at home and just watch people like you doing the Hiking. Good Luck with your hike.

Morning and thanks for the adventures and the openness. This morning, I'm heading into the wild myself. I've taken to hiking the Superior Hiking Trail when I can and it always refuels me emotionally, while challenging me at the same time. We have bears and moose and everything in between in these forests and I will always admit that while I"m captivated, there's always a mix of trepidation about being on my own at night. Solo hiking really is an amazing way to heal and to grow. When I saw this video pop up, it felt meant to be. How lovely your moors! I'm always a fan of the gothic novel and Jane Eyre is always my favorite, along with The Secret Garden and D Du Maurier's work. Kate Bush anyone? :-). Perhaps next year I'll be following in your footsteps? I'm sending out peace and love to you and all during these times. Hike on fellow seeker! Coming to you from way up in the NW of Wisconsin in the USA, on lovely Lake Superior.

Loved this Abbie. I really relate to what you said about not really being able to put your fears into words - I have this too, particularly in woodland where I previously had a big freakout, gathered up my stuff and scurried through the woods to be closer to the rest of the group I was with (I had attempted to camp further away to overcome my fears, but it was not to be that night). I find woods at night very tough. I finally managed my first solo camp (with dog companion, which helped a lot) this weekend and by coincidence also uploaded a (shorter, very amateur!) film about it yesterday in the hope of inspiring others to push past the fear. I must admit I did not sleep a single wink as I felt so alert, though I wasn't too scared as I was on a hill and the moon was bright so I could see all around. I would love to be able to sleep even a few hours!

I loved this exploration of Dartmoor's periphery! I struggled to understand why the Dartmoor way misses out some cracking parts of the edge of the moor but I have realised it is both more accessible and sustainable that way. Some of the most beautiful parts are also very sensitive and wouldn't sustain a lot of traffic. I really enjoyed seeing the areas I grew up around near Ivybridge and out to buckfastleigh.

Very well done . Great video. As a landscape photographer I am always looking for new areas to get some awesome images .one place I certainly wouldn`t photograph would be that eyesore of the working quarry but can you recommend some incredible places on that route for quality images . Thank you again for taking us on this trail you are incredible even if you don`t always think so .Keep up the stunning videos

Hello Abbie.. Like me sometimes we do things that are scary. All i do is think about the nice things when wild-camping and it makes it so much better and enjoyable. At night i listen for movement of the Deer and Foxes that seem to be close by. The odd hooting of the Barn owls and other creatures such as Hedgehogs and Mice. I try to make as many as i can companions and it seems like they are my only company. I just cannot wait until i am well enough to return to the wild but for now i do Hill-walking close to where i live and have the odd picnic or Bbq while out.. Regards Mick... Beautiful area to walk Abbie. Well done! Loved the little "gifts" you had along the way:.. the scarf ( hope you kept it), the swing, the overnight stay in lady's garden, the colourful ducks... and probably a lot more. Would love to do one of your group walk and meet you. Any plans for North Devon? X

I'd never go wildcamping by myself because I'm afraid of other people harming me. I don't have other fears. That reason alone is enough. I don't know how you do it.

I know this probably doesn't help, but you're significantly more likely to be injured or killed on the way to a national park than you are to be accosted in your tent. I don't know of any recorded violent incidents involving wild camping in the UK.

Think of how few people you are likely to come across on a hike or come across when you are wild camping and then how unlikely it is that they would do someone harm. Hope you get out to hike and enjjy the outdoors.

I know that Abbie doesn't interact with her viewers in the comments section (otherwise I would ask her) so I would like to ask everyone - how do you deal with boredom (if that is an issue for some of you) when you hike and camp alone? Once your tent is pitched in the late afternoon/ early evening, what do you do until you turn in for the night? Read? Internet (if there is a good enough connection). Or do you just go to sleep very early? Really keen to know. Many thanks.

I try to practice 'mindful walking' Using your senses isolate each (taste is hardest) and focus entirely on that sense for a given time along your route then another sense and so on. Its good to see more, hear more smell more etc. and passes the time quickly whilst using your brain to analyze stimuli in terms oif thoughts and feelings, inspirations etc Its fun too. Never bored

Great video as usual - will be walking this in day stages soon as it's local. There's a bit at 47:20 where you are trying to decide how to pronounce "North Bovey" - is it Bohvey or Bovvy? Neither :) Bovey is pronounced Buvvy in all the places you visit i.e. River Buvvy, Buvvy Tracey (we usually just shorten this to just Buvvy on it's own), North Buvvy. Also there's the tricky "Teign" which is variously pronounced tin, teen or tayn depending which place and defying all logic - it's the River Teen, Teignmouth=Tinmouth, Teigngrace=Teengrace and Kingsteignton = Kings-tayn-ton. Apologies for fickle Devon pronounciations :D
