There is a lot of information online about sharpening. When I began using hand tools for woodworking, I found sharpening to be intimidating. I really appreciate your simple, stress-free, smart approach to sharpening. I never thought of dulling the point of the knife to prevent it from digging into your cutting surface. Brilliant!

Lots and lots of useful information and if it is coming from experience there is nothing like that. Thank you so much. I am doing my research and this is going to be really helpful.

Fantastic Jeff, thank you for this video and Darryn & Carrie for the KZfaq platform. I too will rewatch many times as I do with DAS Bookbinding videos! I plan on doing leather bindings this spring and this was very informative.

Bell skiver, is the name of that medium-sized medal device that was on the table used to cut down the thickness of leather. 2... pairing is similar to what leather craftsman use as well as Skivers. Skivers come in different shapes and sizes. They do what a pairing knife does but each size and style has specific features. There is no need to re-invent a wheel that is round. The device Peachy was trying to make is already prevalent in the leather crafting community. The incredible thing about it is so many tools can be shared. He might want to try a - a French edge beveler that takes off line by line in different widths. There is also something called a - safety beveler. I encourage him to look at the tools the Japanese and Koreans are using as well as Midwestern culture like Springfield Leather Company or Tandy. If Peachy built his handles flat in the area close to the side of the blade he will hold it on, then he can get a closer cut and more control with his blade. Leather craftsman use 2 ways to sharpen their blades. #1 - a thick vegetable tanned leather like 8oz or more with the white or green jeweler rouge depending on the blade. #2 - a Whetstone (primarily Asian craftsman use them). It's funny. I was thinking of making my own leather bound book. I have way too many hides I need to use. Thank you for sharing this video 😊.

This is not related to the video, but do you have any suggestions for single sheet binding besides perfect binding that uses sewing?

Not that I recommend. There are variations of over-sewing into sections and then binding these as normal sections. However, the perforation of the spine edge of the sheets can be quite damaging to the original material. I'd recommend scanning the originals, printing so that they can be bound as folded sections, and preserving original materials in some sort of wrapper portfolio.

There is Chinese and Japanese style binding, but by design that requires a large gutter (margin with no printing that will be covered by the binding). An friend and I were workshopping ideas for how to bind her art and one thing came up with glueing a cardstock strip to one edge and binding it using the cardstock as the gutter. (Although I stuppose we could also use cardstock strips folded in half and bind it western style.) There is the risk of water damage to one edge of the art though, and I'm not sure how strong it would be, so she's also considering putting the art in plastic sleeves and binding that

Lançando um desafio ;) Gostaria de fazer uma série de vídeos a ensinar encadernar com papel 40grs e capas de pele soltas, sem cartão? Desculpe o meu péssimo inglês Launching a challenge ;) Would you like to make a series of videos teaching how to bind with 40gsm paper and loose leather covers, without cardboard? Sorry for my bad English
