First off I am glad to see you are back I have seen a couple of your videos and find then easy to understand. I am fairly new with my interest in book binding. I know there are different cover types, I've also seen a few other videos with different opinions and wanted to ask your opinion on vinyl as a book covering.? And what sort of fabrics are ok v not ok.

I'm flattered that you noticed my absence! I'm back in action now and have a few fun videos planned. As for fabric, to be honest I haven't played around with it much. Most of my interest has been in leather, with some minor experimentation with paper. Maybe in the future I'll dive into fabric binding, and if I make any discoveries I'll be sure to post them on the channel!

Just want to say that until this morning I’d never once considered book binding as something I ever wanted to do. I’ve just binged everything you have on the topic and I’m borderline obsessed. I want to make leatherbound versions of all my books! For someone just getting into the hobby, have you considered documenting what you think it might cost? You did a really nice summary on your to building video for what it cost to make your press, and I saw you got that leather for about $20. I’d be curious to see how you got your vinyl heat machine thing to print the foil designs and what that process or that machine costs. (Again, I’m just now learning about this stuff so I don’t know what it’s all called!)

If possible would you be able to make a video on how you use your cricut in terms of book binding and which model you'd recommend? I haven't been able to find any specific videos about it :)
@ingeniusdesigns
@ingeniusdesigns 10 ай бұрын
So far I haven't made any Cricut-specific content because I don't want the videos to only be applicable to people with a certain machine. That being said, I use a Cricut Maker and cut on the Washi Paper preset with more pressure. I also have some information in this video about successfully designing cover art that is optimized for vinyl cutters. The last half of the video is particularly pertinent to that point: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/hsupdch529K9j40.html

Great video. Do you think you could use the faux leather sold at fabric stores?
@ingeniusdesigns
@ingeniusdesigns 6 ай бұрын
It's hard to make a call on that without seeing the specific faux leather that you're interested in, but if it has all the properties (thickness, flexibility, etc.) of bookbinding leather that I lay out in this video, then I don't see why it wouldn't work. If you're planning to apply cover art with heat transfer vinyl, though, you might want to test your iron on the fabric first, to make sure it won't melt.

Have you ever tried using faux leathers? There really isn’t any leather supply stores near me but Joanns has a very thin and stretchy faux that looks and feels basically the same as leather
@ingeniusdesigns
@ingeniusdesigns 6 ай бұрын
I'm currently experimenting with faux leathers. They should work as long as they have all the properties described in this video. The only risk is potential melting when ironing designs onto the books. This shouldn't be a big deal since many commercially available books are bound in vegan leather, but I would experiment on a small section first to see how it handles heat.

Would thicker stiffer leather work if you weren't using it to cover a hard book? Like if you were doing a soft cover?
@ingeniusdesigns
@ingeniusdesigns 2 ай бұрын
Yes, a softcover book would be more forgiving, since not all the bending has to be concentrated at one point.

Great question. I keep most of my scraps (except the smallest ones) for other leathercraft purposes. I do a lot of other things with leather. I also use the scraps (as you noticed) to practice for other bookbinding projects. The rectangular ones I showed on the other video were cut from my scraps too. I definitely wouldn't buy a dedicated hide for throw-away purposes. Waste not, want not!

Have you ever tried faux leather?
@ingeniusdesigns
@ingeniusdesigns 5 ай бұрын
Yes! And it works great. The tricky thing can be finding faux leather that has all the qualities of a desirable bookbinding leather (as outlined in this video), but if you find one then many faux/vegan leathers will work fine. If you plan to iron on HTV designs like I often do, though, then you should test on a small piece of the faux leather first, to make sure that your iron isn't going to melt it.
