I did the same experiment 2 months ago, however without soaking the seeds, and the plants now are about 10cm height. I never expected them to grow, it was a real surprise when I saw them, and then I came to this video to check if they are really date palms! Yes, they are date palms and I am happy about it

+Sofia Sugar you never expect them to grow? oh man, you better be ready, because over the next few years they will grow, and grow, and grow... tip: lots of natural light, water them from the bottom not too often, and don´t worry too much, they´ll do the rest.

I was cleaning the fridge and saw some dates, so I decided to put one of the seeds in a pot, without expecting to grow because I thought it wouldn't. But it did. I put some water from time to time, I think probably around 2 and a half months and poof suddenly there it was. 🌱 so here I am watching videos and searching information as to how to take care of my little plant. 🥰

My dear Elizabeth, Palm tree can grow if it was came by seeds, but the proplems are 1.palm tree can't give any DATES in the Future, if it gave date, it will be week and Quality is not good. 2.more than 80% palms came from seeds may be MALE, not Female to give us Dates. I know this because I'm from the original Land of Palms

Males take between 3 and 6 years to flower, female ones between 6 and 10. You need of course one male for pollination, and hot whether for the fruits to develop. It's not a plant for impatient folk, luckily, it needs no ministration either. Anyway, if you have enough room for it, go ahead and sprout a bunch of seeds and plant them in a row, and just forget about them. In a few years, you'll be either pleasantly surprised or end up with a decorative palm row :)

i too am experimenting with growing a date tree. what i did was put a handful of date seeds into a jar with shallow water. changing the water to keep it clean and also i made sure the seeds were clean from any skins. and success!! i too have roots. i think the hard part is waiting and watching them grow into trees. i heard it can take years before any dates.

I just bought a bunch of dates tonight- 18 to be exact, but when I opened 2 of them they were black and hairy inside- something out of " Invasion of The Body Snatchers!!" Lol- thank God I didn't eat them! But I cut opened the other 16 dates and their now soaking in water for 24 yrs before I ziplock them, thanks for telling us about leaving them in the bag longer! Oh yeah- hi from NYC!! :)

I used to sprout these every Christmas Season and give them as gifts in the spring. I'd shove them in a peet pellet, keep them wet until the tap root sprouted out the bottom. They'd sprout within a week or so. Then I would plant them in a styro cup, 1/2 potting soil, 1/2 vermiculite. Even after 10yrs, the plants aren't unwieldy but the fronds do have spines. If you live in an area where they have to be brought in in the winter, it's better just to grow them indoors. They'll sunburn badly if you take them outside in direct summer sun.

I'm learning they need magnesium to Epsom salts may do the trick but not sure how much perhaps put some in the spray bottle and use a small amount diluted with borax (boron) perhaps they will grow amazing well and faster?

acerb45666555: An indigenous ranger here in Australia noticed a lone male date palm near the Australian centre. He thought that it was unusual and it turned out to be unique in the world (after DNA testing). This tree produces the greatest number of male flowers annually of any date palms in the world, and is now being commercialised.

To grow date palm from seeds you need to wait 5 to 15 year to have date according to the type of date palm you take the seeds from it moreover the new palm tree can be male or famale ,you need both to get dates from a female palm tree

Bad idea to grow from seed unless you are a plant breeder hoping to discover a worthwhile new variety. A date palm grown from seed has an entirely unpredictable outcome yet you will have to wait on average for 10 years before you will know. I would not want to waste those 10 years (not 5 as other people here have stated).

I'm beginning to see that date palms are slow growing. Also I would grow date palms for decorative reasons, rather than for fruit production. Date palms grown from seedlings are not reliable for date production. Commercial operations use the offshoot method to generate new trees.

Kaluya, I am not an expert, but I do know that you need a male plant and a female plant in order to produce fruit. Myself, I only have the one date palm plant, so I know that I will never get dates off of it. But, I grow it anyway for its decorative features, and also as an experiment to see if I can keep it alive in Canada, which has a colder climate. Hope this helps :)

Thanks Ottee, your response contributed courage to me, for this experiment. Right now my date plants have three leaves and each has 1 ft tall, they are 8 plants. Therefore,I still don't know what will happen due to the climate in Uganda is not so much hot compared to the areas where they best. However, I still need more people who have different or similar experiences to help me on these plants please!!!.

A few years ago I planted 10 date seeds. 9 of them sprouted. I gave 4 of them to my mother-in-law and I planted the other 5 in my back yard. They did ok until I ran over 3 of them with the mower. Yeah, they didn't do too well after that. Then later I ran over another one with the mower. So I have one left now but it's like 4 1/2 feet tall.

***** hello there in regards of the growth of the date palm tree it takes about 5 years to get dates out of it. i am a date farmer and it is our family business, i currently own 160 and will have more and my father owns about 2000 palm tree. for your info we don't grow it from the seed it will take forever rather we plant it from its mother coz every palm tree will have about 3 to 5 small palm try along it is life span, so we take from its mother when it is about 40 pound and plant it some where els quit frankly it will be batter than its mother fruit wise. i hope you will benefit from this information and you will get batter idea about palm tree

I don't think you could grow date palms because the date palms need a very hot climate like the middle east which is way different from Kiwi climate, the trees are males and females so you need to grow many trees to get fruits, also tree grown from seeds do not produce the same fruit quality of the parent tree and could be non eatable.
@cliffordwade9891
@cliffordwade9891 8 жыл бұрын
'tree grown from seeds do not produce the same fruit quality of the parent tree' That's especially true for Apples. Apple orchards are generally pollinated w/crab-apple trees. We just grow palms as ornamentals anyway They are farmed successfully as far as 35N Latitude Here In The States Arid and Sunny seems the key Other than that, my wife and I get all kinds of unusual varieties from the produce section
