This was an incredible date palm tree adventure! Erica in Phoenix, Arizona (Arcadia) took me up over 50 feet high in her lift to taste test the freshest and most delicious black sphinx dates EVER! Yes, Jake looked excited to go even higher than 40 feet where the dates are to get the best view of the valley, lol. You couldn't get me up in that lift unless it was for a good cause like harvesting a small amount of meristem tissue for tissue culture. Then I might suck some air between my teeth and go. Pretty awesome trees for 98 years old!

Very interesting video , but to the lady in the video : the Balah, or the red ones are just dates like the black ones . They are part of the harvest . Those who think there not ready yet are mistaken . I grew up growing them in Mauritania , North Africa . Great job .

Here in Australia I am growing Barhee, Khalas and Medjool dates and will have my first harvest this season (2016-17). If I were starting working life again I would choose to be a date farmer. I love them.

im from IRAQ.. Traditionaly almost every family here makes excellent vinegar of dates, just by adding a liter of water to 1kg of dates and just to wait one month to get strong vinegar

The lift gave me a beautiful memory of my late father. He was a fire fighter and when I was a little girl, he let me go up in the fire dept. lift and it was dizzyingly wonderful! My mother was at the bottom screaming at him to bring me down, that I was going to be killed! It was too funny and so much fun. And now THAT memory reminds me of another memory of getting to ride in the big red fire truck during a homecoming parade when I was probably 10 years old. Daddy driving and me waving at the world bigger than the homecoming queen waved. :)

In kingdom of Bahrain,,we can't live without palm tree or even miss one day to eat dates..we have plenty... veraty if date kinds...we have it all year long...and every month we get different kind of date...me especially I have two types of palm tree... one is named Khslad...which is most popular and most healthy and most lived by people...it is yallowish brown in colorand another one named khenezy palm...it is deep burgundy in color

It's the first time I am hearing that it need both couple to date to get dates. But how to identify a male from a female date tree?

It's very obvious to those whom used to work with dates trees, the male tree have more branches therefore more thorns, also the very early fruit looks thicker and smells like a semen, and results in flower kind fruit, but females tree even without fertilization the fruit will still look like a dates at very early stage. also the turnk may be wider form males than females as far as I noticed. If you have bees around the will be all over the male tree for the flower and that's how naturally dates tree get fertilized Hope this is answering your question

Be careful of all that sweet, too intense for me… I don't digest dates well. I avoid dates because of that, and i've got plenty of experience with eating date fruits over the decades. Other fresh fruits my body generally handles well.

It's not that we chose to, it's that the companies only give us dried over ripened dates. The only way we can buy dates is in dried form. They are very sweet this way, so they are good with coffee or tea. They become very strong on their own though.
