Growing Your Own DATES - I found a SECRET Date Tree Ranch...Delicious! I left Phoenix at 1am and returned at 3pm on the same day! I was on a mission to see the China Date Ranch near Death Valley California. We met the AMAZING owner Brian, tasted some rare and delicious dates, and purchased half a dozen date palm trees! Here's how to plant a date palm tree and a brief tour of the China Date Ranch on the California/Nevada border! Enjoy! www.LearnFromJake.com

I see that the soil at your home is fantastically black under the mulch. Date seeds have a germination period of 2000 years. I really liked that the palm trees were soaked in water before planting. That's exactly how it's done. I also saw the farm. Thank you.

I recently heard about how they managed to sprout the seeds of 2000 years old dates found in the ruins of Masada and managed to revive an extinct kind of dates. So I told myself it can't be that hard and tried it out myself... today I found that three of mine have successfully germinated and I planted them. I'll see how that works for myself soon enough. XD

@@doolittleranch8302 Mmh... I wonder whether that is already too much water? What I did was wrap them in a paper kitchen towel, spray it with water and then put it into an airtight plastic box that I put below the radiator to keep it constantly warm and humid. Then I didn't touch it for a couple of weeks and they sprouted just fine. Admittedly I saw a KZfaq clip here that went about it this exact way and can only confirm that it works.

Hey Jake, love your passion for growing! I grow date palms for a living and would like to make a couple of suggestions. First, do not back fill your planting hole with all those amendments. Use native soil only for your back fill. I grow organically and use lots of mulch, as you do. but organic mater (mulch, potting soil, store bought soil, and so on) in the hole actually can create several problems. First, it contributes to stem rot at the place where the offshoot was cut. It can also sour if it gets a little too wet (and since date palm LOVE water you want the soil on the wet side) Also as organic mater decays, the little bit of soil that is left settles and it changes the planting depth. Also as organic mater decomposes it can leave pockets of air where the new roots can not get to the soil. So, back fill with native mineral soil only. Put all those good amendments and mulch on top of the soil. The nutrients and other benefits will soak in with water and time. on top the soil is where it will do the most good. One more trick, since air pockets are the #1 reason for offshoots dying, try this trick. Make a basin around the palm and flood it. Then use a stick or shovel and to turn the fill soil to a mud slurry. Plunge it in and out like you were churning butter in an old fashion butter churn, in and out kind of fast. As you work the slurry, you will see air bubbles rise from the around the offshoot. You will probably be surprised just how much air comes out! This gives you great soil contact with the root zone. one last note, the China Ranch folks are GREAT PEOPLE, just like you!

Jake. You are going to hate having those so close together. You will have fronds damaging the fruit on its neighbor palm. And you will find it VERY difficult to work with fronds jaming into each other. Also I have found that adding any kind of organic material, including compost or worm cast, only helps to encourage root rot on in the case of date palm, crown rot. You should only back fill with native mineral soil. check out UC Davis work on planting trees and amendments. They found you should ONLY add organic material to the surface, never in the planting hole.

For each 7 females date trees, there should be one males; so that the pollination rate get's higher and more successful. There is also another way of pollination for these tree, which is by spraying the power into them by using pray machine.... there are many ticks you can do with these trees... this is what we do here in the middle east normally... good luck with your work..

I purchased 4.5 acres in Huachuca Arizona, about a 15 minute drive from Tombstone, I've been watching you and GYG closely to learn what I can grow in my new climate. Huachuca doesn't get near as hot and has more monsoon rains because of the elevation and the Huachuca mountains. Huachuca in Apache means (Thunder). There’s a part of Phoenix known to grow black Sphinx dates. I have tasted all of the varieties of dates that you can get in California and Arizona but in my opinion, the Black Sphinx are the best. They are soft and black and taste like caramel candy. I haven’t had any in years and I would love to get a little palm for my farm near Escondido, CA but I don’t know how. As you are so close to phoenix, you ought to try growing one if you could get a pup. The variety will probably slowly go extinct. They grow well in the Phoenix area. They are not as high yielding as the deglet noor or as popular as the Medjools but they are amazing.

Gee you did everything imaginable to help the new tree thrive then you watered it with city water. Does it make any sense to consider putting in a cistern to collect rain water and maybe some of the water from the stream to water your plants? Good luck with the date trees. You have a nice big lot to be able to plant a big variety.

I really enjoyed watching your video. I, however, would add the following: In planting date palm offsets, spacing should be at least 12-- 15 feet. Closer spacing would result in bent trunks of the trees. Also, it is advisable to wrap the offsets with straw or burlap to protect them from the heat of the sun. You don't need to add mycorrhizae.

So thanks for showing us! We are super excited to see how your date trees grow. What's also interesting is that in our vlogs, we give examples of different types of online businesses to start and I (Brian) talk about organic gardening eCourses that people can sell when they have knowledge of gardening and can put together an online class about it... And YOU DO JUST THAT! We cannot wait to get a piece of land, put up a yurt (or straw bale house... earthship... something sustainable...) and do permaculture! Wow, great and amazing dates plants that can yield fruits even the plantation field is not belonging in middle east country. Here in the Philippines is not working in, dates can grow but it would not flourish fruits even until they are trees in size. I don't know the real answer but some of my workmate before way back when I was working in Saudi. He told me maybe it's the season is the main reason. It's affecting and hindering fruits to grow and be develop to become suitable and be able to consume by owners firstly. Or perhaps Philippines is not a warm country. But we have a dry season or maybe Dates is not for Philippines to bear fruits. Or maybe it needs to be study thoroughly to be able to produce fruit crops. Good day! Hoping to someone which could share the exact way of information on raising date palm properly. Thanks

date palm is really sensitive to climate and temperatures even here in sahara, in some cities if the summer isnt as hot or the winter comes very early it can ruin the harvest i live in a city where summer is 40-45c and even so, the fruits end rippening very late in september even tho september is still relatively hot but some clusters ripped late in october which is late autumn and the start of cold so you get the idea how its very hard to get the palm tree or start producing and have the fruit rippen if you dont have a very long hot summer

Hi Jake - Love your garden and interest in date palms. Curious to know how old your date tree was when you planted it, and when you can expect to harvest your dates? I currently garden hydro-organically veggies, herbs, and also have organic mango and avocado trees in South Florida, PBC. I am in Zone 10 - can I grow what you grow in Tempe?

Great video man. In your follow up videos please let us know if you got male and female plants -since you get that much better fruit production with at least one male -and also how long until you can expect fruit.
