Isn't that amazing? It's like the victimhood politics that have people in the west fuming about stuff that happened 200-400 years ago is lost on the Vietnamese, arguably one of the most victimized peoples on Earth, after a generation.

It's important to remember that America's involvement in Vietnam was only one of many invasions the country endured and defeated. China has been invading Vietnam for 1000 years. France occupied and exploited Vietnam for over 80 years before being defeated in 1954. Japan invaded and occupied Vietnam during WWII before being expelled in 1945. After the American war, Cambodia invaded Vietnam sparking another 10 year war. Then China invaded again in 1979. In 1966 Ho Chi Minh made the following quote in an interview that illustrates the Vietamese attitude toward war " If they (the Americans) want to make war for 20 years then we shall make war for 20 years. If they want to make peace, we shall make peace and invite them to tea afterwards." Vietnam has made peace with America and now it's "Tea Time" for Americans here in Vietnam.

As a Vietnamese American who left in 1975, I find most Vietnamese Americans still resent the new Socialist Government of VN, and only because of the past. It's like the Southerners resentment of the North after the Civil War. But as I am someone who has lived in VN for the past 12 years, I must say, people here are super kind. The people are very forgiving, just don't criticise any part of VN. They do not take condescndening jokes lightly, which was what I had to get used to as an immigrant in America now living here.

Several times someone would hand me $100 and this was in 1995!

I left in 2007, a recent conversation with a friend in his 50s said thins changed after the GFC. In my 30 years in corporate USA 1977-2007 there was always work for mature workers who were seen as valuable for experience - not any more. Here in Oz basically you get 20 years post college/uni to work make a fortune to pay-off HECS/student loans, your mortgage (as if) and save for retirement...no bloody chance.

I’m currently going through the whole agism thing. People just ignore it for the most part because in the states it’s a dog eat dog culture. I’m 50 now with a degree from a top rated university PLUS a specialty certificate in the healthcare system and CANNOT find a good job! Women just forget you exist after 50 unless your loaded with money, then that’s all they want. I’m entirely DONE with western culture! @@chrishamlin5863 I've lived in SEA for over 5 years. 3 years continuously in Philippines. But also in Malaysia, Thailand , and Singapore. Haven't been to Vietnam. Don't really have plans to go until I hit Indonesia and Spain.

It really does not matter. In the West you have to constantly prove yourself as a straight white male you are never enough. In Asia your status is immediately better, at least you can get the ladies and enjoy a less stressful life with fresh food and 100 times cheaper healthcare. As an adult male all I need is fresh from scratch food, affordable shelter and affordable healthcare.

I think the difference economically is that in the west the family court/social justice based hiring systems will seize on your peak earning years to redistribute your wealth and assets (job, house, etc) and after this point you will be discarded, so usually by age 55-60, while in the East there is enough left in your pocket for a decent lifestyle and someone to push your wheelchair into the great beyond (like you say, a condo and social security check). In the USA, men are being downsized into retirement while ex-wives refuse to downsize lifestyles after age 60. Socially, the difference is that families, due to social pressure often based on shame and rigidity, take care of family members who cannot work and people are not despised because of currently fashionable in-group out-group identifiers. The current pendulum swing against the sins of the past, requires western cultures to despise those of us who share identifiers with the oppressors, that is those of us afflicted with white maleism. I think in the inward-facing cultures where there is still some spiritual component like karma or mudita, there is less likely to be some ingroup and outgroup/scapegoat for ALL of society's ills and less of a tendency to throw the baby out with the bathwater. I think in the inward-facing cultures people are also more likley to accept something like "fate" or karma or cyclical states of being, which also creates a lot of issues that leave the pendulum swing pushing crowd angry and confused, (but then again every change or movement leaves them angry and confused.) As far as male-female relationships, they have always been based on economics and the oldest profession, in neoliberalism and in traditional cultures. The entire idea of marriage for "love" is a relatively recent western concept.

I didn't ask his net worth, but he moved there and was teaching English on a work visa. Does that sound rich to you? He married 2 years later after he found the right woman. He wasn't married when he arrived. There is usually a way to get things done in life when your glass is half full friend. Don't surrender your future out of fear. Keep your head up and look for a path forward that you love. Attitude is 90% in life.

English teachers can make ~ $1500 a month, and most people can live for a bit less than that in your own apartment.

How do you ignore the fact that my wife has adult children who are the same age as my adult children and she is also a grandmother. Furthermore, she's a successful entrepreneur here in Vietnam who was doing just fine without me OR my money. There are men who come to SE Asia and marry much younger women but I'm not one of them. She joined the Youth Brigade when she was 17 doing maintenance work on the Ho Chi Minh Trail in Laos and eventually became a nurse in the North Vietnamese Army (NVA). While she was serving in Laos, American bombers completely leveled her hometown of Thanh Hoa. This woman has every reason to hate me and everyone who looks like me and I wouldn’t blame her one bit if she did. However, her relationship with me is the exact opposite. No one was happier when my wife and I announced our engagement and she’s been super supportive of us during the 3 ½ years we’ve been married. I could not ask for a more loving and supportive mother-in law. She is typical of the people here in Vietnam. They have moved on from the war and they LOVE Americans.

Yes. Hanoi is one of the most pollutted cities in the world and I find myself coughing on days when the air quality is exceptionally bad. However, I find that a small price to pay for living in such an amazing city. The government is aggressively dealing with this problem and I expect things will continue to improve.

No, Currently Vietnam has no retirement visa. There is much talk about it but there is reluctance on the part of the Vietnamese government. I believe it's because they don't want to be in a positon in which Vietnam is supporting the retirees of other countries.

I came to Vietnam assuming women would ignore me the same way they did in America so I was focused on figuring out how I was going to cover over 1000 miles of unfamiliar terrain on a bicycle without getting lost in the jungle, running out of battery power and getting attacked by a tiger. Meeting women was the last thing on my mind. My wife, who's a practicing Buddhist, believes the universe brough us together.This is the best explanation I have.

However, even if you live in an upscale area, there will be many times you will have to leave your enclave to go where 95% of Vietnamese live, and must keep your guard up. There is a reason for motorbike guards outside every shop in Saigon (I don't see so many in Da Nang, Nha Trang). Also an example: I mentored a Korean teenager who lived in Thao Dien - family with big house, car, driver - and one day 2 dirtballs on a motorbike snatched their dog from his sister while being walked. They wanted a big ransom, police wouldn't help, I never found out how that resolved.
