In this German lesson (German as a foreign language) from the @hallodeutschschule you will learn all 5 rules for the case dative with dialogues and examples from everyday life! This is how LEARNING GERMAN is fun and easy!
1) Prepositions always with the DATIVE!
After the prepositions von, bei, zu, aus, seit, mit, nach, ab, gegenüber , there is always a dative object (song to easily memorize the dative prepositions).
Many verbs in German grammar have a fixed preposition. These prepositions also have an impact on the case to be used, e.g. fahren + mit.
Verbs with prepositions are always followed by a fixed case.
2) Verbs always with the dative
How can you memorize the verbs with the dative case? Unfortunately, there are no fixed and fast rules, so you'll have to memorize the verbs that use a dative complement. It is best to learn whole sentences with the verbs that require a specific case - this way you will remember them faster than individual words.
These include: antworten, glauben, gratulieren, gelingen, danken, schmecken, absagen, gefallen, vertrauen, gehören, begegnen, zustimmen, folgen, schreiben, sich anpassen, beibringen, wehtun, zuhören.
The verbs that use a dative complement belong to the intransitive verbs.
3) Verbs with two objects (indirect object)
Some verbs can have a second object in addition to the accusative object. The second object is often a dative object. This group includes verbs of giving, taking, and saying, e.g. geben, schenken, schicken, bringen, zeigen and leihen.
4) Most prepositions always require the same case. However, there are prepositions that can change case. ... This is why these prepositions are called alternating prepositions: in, an, unter, über, auf, vor, hinter, neben and zwischen..
The question "Where?", i.e. with positional verbs sein, stehen, liegen, hängen, sitzen, bleiben, etc., is followed by a dative object.
5) Temporal prepositions
If you ask “when?” are usually followed by the dative.
These prepositions always have a dative in the temporal context.
You will learn to decline the definite articles, the indefinite articles, the possessive articles, the personal pronouns and adjectives (adjective declension) in the dative.
