Worked 30 hours a week all through high school, works and goes to school full-time during the year, and expected to work 3 jobs over the summer, kicked out of the house, and the mom is still trying to run the show? This mom is overkill. I wouldn't be surprised if this mother didn't have a job herself.
@JustATotalNerd
@JustATotalNerd 6 жыл бұрын
Its not really working 3 jobs if the total hours were the same or less than a full-time job. She was asking her daughter to work 30-40, not 15. It's doable by anyone who is not in school or has other full-time commitments. I work 46-50 hours a week and still have time to maintain a relationship, play video games and watch youtube vids, and most importantly get a good night's sleep.
@AngelaMastrodonato
@AngelaMastrodonato 5 жыл бұрын
I have mixed feeling about this. When I heard the caller mention 3 jobs, my first thought was, why not encourage more hours at the first job? These people act like martyrs working all their jobs when the jobs might conflict with each other and putting more time/effort into the first job may be more manageable. But perhaps I have gone out on a tangent. My real point is there is a happy medium. 30 hours a week while going to school full time is going above and beyond and should be recognized as such, not considered the bare minimum. While going to school, 15-20 hours a week is a realistic expectation. While not going to school, working 15 hours a week is not ambitious at all. 40-50 hours a week is a realistic expectation. It’s like the girl went from one extreme to the other. She started out doing more than necessary and then did a complete 180. Maybe you’re right-she’s burnt out. Perhaps she needs to make the mistakes to learn. At least at 19 she has time to fix these mistakes, however she will probably live with the regret for a while, wondering how much further ahead she may have been. Some mistakes are painful though.

While I listened to this, I started spewing my thoughts before I finished the video and my have failed to really listen. I may have missed some things. Like this daughter is giving up a scholarship to follow this boy to his collage? If that’s true, as a Mom myself, my response to my daughter would be “H3ll to the no!” While working fewer hours isn’t ambitious if she can learn to be happy with a very modest lifestyle who are we to judge, but to take on more student loans than necessary, especially with the intent of working less, that is dumb! This girl will end up like the boyfriend of another caller who was 36, made only 30K a year and had over $60K in student loans plus a car payment. And seemed content with that! But the caller wasn’t and was considering breaking off an engagement.

happygoluky2 Would you husband expect you to give up a scholarship in order for you to be closer to him? These parents are ridiculous. She was no problem at all during high school, she's working and has worked throughout school, she got scholarships to college - and the only complaint her parents have is that her boyfriend suggested full-time work might interfere with their summer plans? So their reaction is to kick her out and force her to take out a loan? That's ridiculous. And she's still a teen! Now she's got a student loan to pay off AND they're taking the car so she can't work.
@MsYayMusic

So you drove your daughter to take out loans for living expenses in the hopes that she would see the error in her ways and not make decisions that would cause her to take out loans? That doesn't make any sense. Just admit that you were upset she wasn't fully obeying you for the first time so you made her move out. Your decision caused more financial harm to her than her only working 15 hrs a week. She is also even less likely to listen to you now.

@@calebakinfolarin8941 It is also a definite red flag as far as emotional immaturity. If he’s a healthy and emotionally mature adult then he’ll be happy for her to be making wise choices and building a solid foundation for her future. Saying something like “Wow your working full-time? I’m not sure if we’ll be able to have much fun this summer.” That shows he needs to grow up. Most adults work full time and shockingly enough the entertainment sector hasn’t gone out of business. 40 hours a week leaves plenty of time for other activities and will help set her up for a brighter future. If he’s more concerned with “having fun” then having a good future, then she should probably dump this kid. I’m not trying to be mean but he’s not emotionally mature enough to be dating. You need to want what’s best for yourself and want what’s best for your partner. If you care more about short-term pleasure instead of long-term happiness then that’s a short coming that has to be worked on.

I'm totally siding with the girl on this one. She worked and went to school basically full time her entire teenage years. She goes to college, going full time, working too. The moment she decides maybe she wants a little time to be a kid and breathe for 3 months out of the year, you kick her to the curb and force her into a predatory loan. She's gonna be in debt one way or the other, and she at least feels like she has some support with the boyfriend. I don't blame her!

She's going to be in that one way or another? Why? It's hard to see her being in bed while on scholarships plus working 30 hours a week or 40 hour weeks in the summer. I was doing that as a student and I would take 2 weeks off and I will go to party in southern europe. I don't really see the reason to have 3 months off to have a good time. And stressed about that. Also it doesn't look like she has 3 months off rather than 3 months of working part-time which probably won't allow her to do much traveling anyways

The daughter was able to work 30hrs and finish HS with honors. Now she's finished freshman year of college and working 15hrs over the summer and hanging with her BF. The underlying issue is that she's burnt out. People who coast through HS often don't build the resilience to get through tougher college courses. It would also explain why she's eager to switch schools. Also this relationship had the self life of milk. It would've been easier for the Mother's soul, if she waited it out.

They should at least compromise and let her work part time for a few months and then when school starts again go back up to full time. This control is only going to get worse and coming from someone who has watched their close friends parents act the same way, it doesn't end well. Now I think working 30 hours a week while going to high school is going above and beyond and unless she is in a desperate financial situation is over kill. This mother is going to strain their relationship, cause resentment, and increase financial strain on their young daughter. The situation will end up worse for both of them. The more the mother pushes, the more the daughter will push back. If that's your definition of "right" then you're wrong. I love(I don't) all the nitwit's who repeat, "who cares what the daughter wants, kick her out!". This mother obviously cares for her daughter and has a 20-year relationship with her. Let's not throw it away because she won't work fulltime over the summer. As far as transferring schools go, that is a bad idea. Also, anyone saying 19 is not a child must have forgotten what being that young is like. Not even fully developed mentally or physically and never been truly challenged by the world. Just because you are legally classified as an adult, doesn't make you one. Based on some of the namecalling in these comments and lack of argument(calling people "snowflakes" is not an argument btw), I'm going to say there are very few adults here.

After college, summers don't exist anymore (unless you're a teacher) I made the mistake at 19 of taking less hours for a boy and I learned from it on my own while maintaining my relationship with my mom. I'm 25, have no debt, and won't compromise my career for attention because I got to learn it myself. The parents are right. It's not good idea to switch schools, give up a scholarship or go into debt because of a boyfriend. The problem is, that she is 19 and in love (and many much older people do stupid stuff when they fall in love). Instead of acting wisely, they treated her like a 6 year old - they threatened to kick her out of the house and were surprised that she really did go. You can threaten a 6 year old and be fairly sure, that they will not go anywhere and will eventually do what you want them to do. If you do the same thing to an adult, you HAVE to be prepared, that they really might go. It may not be a wise decision, but it is still a possibility and once she leaves the house, you lose control. Which is not what this mother wanted. In this case, I would do something like "damage control" i.e. stop nagging her about working hours (and be glad that it is at least 15/week) and focus on the important stuff: NO, you do not give up a scholarship. NO, you do not change schools. Have a nice summer my daughter, see as much of each other as you want and please don't get pregnant. And I would hope, that by the time school starts, most of the pink-and-fluffy love phase will be gone, her head will be clear and she will see, that giving up a scholarship is a bad idea.

I was like, "Okay, bye!" Luckily things worked out and my life didn't implode, so I don't regret it. Even at the time I knew they wanted to protect me. But the instant I felt controlled rather than talked to, I was out. You can bet they had no more say in what I did, how many hours I worked or what classes I was taking. 40+ year olds these days act like they're dumbfounded why a 18-25 year old can't just go out and immediately get a full time +40 hour a week job -- don't work like that anymore, goodluck even getting one job +10 hours part time if you're college age with no or little experience.

It's called multiple jobs that equate to 40-50 hrs. I worked 4 jobs during the summer months of my schooling to get myself to 60-65 hours per week. If my child does not work at least 40 hour weeks during the summer months of college, I will refuse to fund their schooling for the next year. Simple.

@@davidp2981 No, just don't throw oil on the flames. These idiots kicked her own daughter. Let's say that one day she realizes she made a mistake. She'll never go back home to those who threw her out of her house. Man, some people are really bad dealing with teenagers. And then you have bigger idiots who give dumb advices to these people. Teenagers always revolt against authority. So the solution is never use authority. The solution is to use dialogue, to use diplomacy, to find a middle ground.

Tell her to take summer school classes. I'm taking 2 summer school classes this summer and I work 12 hours a week. 3 months in summer times 4 years in college is a whole year. Thats like right at 18 you went 1 whole year to go burger flip. Summer school is key in college I've learned that.

As much as you may think “not very highly” of her boyfriend, you have to let your daughter make her own mistakes. You’ve got to give them “tough love” to prove your point. Tough love is life’s best teacher!

Fix your relationship with your daughter. She is an adult so you have to treat them as such. She partially wants to go to a different school and spend more money because she's trying to get away from you.

GamerNRetro They did treat her as an adult - they basically told her "You don't like the rules living under our roof? Fine. Move out and make your own rules." They just didn't leave her completely stranded; they let her keep the car they're letting her use for work. I don't see a problem with that - they're the ones paying for the insurance and everything under that car. Boyfriends come and go. There's already a red flag with this guy overhearing a conversation and crying to the girl about not seeing her enough. 🙄 Sounds like he needs to man up and get a job himself or something.

GamerNRetro i'm curious to what you mean by "she is an adult so you should treat her as such." If the bank gives me a car in exchange for payment every month, I (as an adult) must give them a payment every month or they repo my car. It's called a contract, which is what this girl had with her parents. They pleaded with her individually and as a couple to continue on the good path she was on to avoid more debt and receive her scholarship but she refused, all because of the influence of a needy boy who didn't want her to work so much. They are well within their right (as three ADULTS who entered into a contract) to not continue to financially support her poor decisions. Would you give money to a friend for living expenses and then watch them blow it on dates with their boyfriend? That's essentially what is happening here. It seems like Tough love, but this woman is really trying to help her daughter understand how to follow through on commitments, avoid more debt, and doing her best to persuade her first. Unfortunately, her BF's hold on her is stronger than her parents' at the moment. There's absolutely nothing wrong with expecting someone to work 30 hours to help pay for school in exchange for financial help and housing. She had a pretty sweet deal compared to me & my husband and it's the daughter who isn't acting like "an adult" here. I'd do the same. If she's paying 100% for everything, she should do whatever she wants… But that is not the case here. I have seen many people harmed by being given financial support as adults. People need to man up and pay for their own lives. The world needs more financially responsible adults

She's an adult. She can do whatever she wants to do and it's none of your business anymore. The more you try to helicopter parent and redirect her, the more she's going to resent you. People are supposed to make stupid mistakes and learn from them. It's not like it's the end of her life if things don't go as planned. Anyone can decide to change whenever they want to. If it doesn't work out, she'll decide to change, but people only decide to change on their own. They oughta take this video down before someone takes his advice.

My parents did this. I dated this deadbeat who sponges off me. They kicked me out, took my car, but still tried to talk me through the process. I ended up getting pregnant, dumping the deadbeat, finding my own way, and rebuilding my relationship with them. Looking back, I’m grateful for how they handled it. My only resentment comes from not listening sooner.

Part-time summer jobs don't grow on trees. If you don't have one lined up by the time your summer starts then your SOL. I have a personal mantra, if your parents only do the bare minimum for you, you only do the bare minimum for them. I hope this lady saved good for her retirement because there is no way I'd be funding that.

'Sounds like the boyfriend is a bit immature. 'Sounds like the daughter has low self-esteem and can't say "no" to the boyfriend. 'Sounds like the mother is controlling, and should consult a professional in how to get her daughter to make better decisions, like prioritizing the scholarship and finishing college debt-free vs a long-distance boyfriend that could probably drop her for another woman without thinking twice.
