Dave Abbruzzese joined Pearl Jam in 1991 and played a crucial role in the band's early years, contributing to albums like "Vs." (1993) and "Vitalogy" (1994). However, he was dismissed from the band in 1994. Dave remains a notable figure in the history of Pearl Jam.

Hello everyone! David Abbruzzese here... I want to let you know that I am aware of the challenging aspects of listening to some of this podcast. I had no idea that the audio was not fully coming across. It was a windy day and the microphone was having trouble dealing with the background noises. As for what some have voiced opinions about... Talking to a little face on a phone isnt a natural way to communicate for me. I wear glasses and without them, I can't see the interviewer clearly. Thats why i dont look into the camera comfortably. My incessant cough is the tail end of a wicked chest cold that was going around in my circle. The mic cutting in and out and the occasion coughs are annoying to me too! I encourage you to read the comments below because I will be attempting to clarify any of my statements that are unintelligible or that dropped out. As for my laid back nature and the choice i made to have a bite to eat while doing a podcast interview? I have paid my dues and at this point in my life and career, I am not going to be something that I am not. I was hungry and at a fantastic Italian coffee shop. The idea of talking about these topics isn't something that I can prepare for, so i just let the truth be told. Thats easier to do if I don't think about the fact that you're going to be listening! 30 years ago. Wow. It might seem easy to go back to that point in time, but the truth of the matter is that my Pearl Jam experience, although certainly a meaningful and impactful part of my life, is but a small part of my story. I am honored that so many are still interested and curious about me and that version of the band. To be a part of the soundtrack of so many lives is something that I am very proud of. Hey Dave the Early Mid 90's was a Time like No other! Esp. w/ You Drumming in Pearl Jam! The Parties ,the Women and the Acid Trips were like No other Time in History. I been a Drummer since 1983 and I must say Pearl Jam in New Orleans in 2016 was my Retirement Party!. Check this Out! I smoked a Joint in the Parking Lot in front of a under-cover cop. He Turned on his lights 10 yards in Front of me. Tripped Me Out He Leaves w/ Lights on. I grabbed my Egg Shaker snook it in the Concert and Un-Officially played Percussion w/ Pearl Jam. I was Hi and had the Time of my Life!! New Orleans 2016.Today I'm Rocking a RMV Drumset 20,10, 14 Fl w/ Gretsch Bell Brass 3mm. Things are Rockin in the Studio. I Love You Brother! No disrespect to any of the other drummers who have sat for PJ but Dave is hands down my favorite. I remember being 16 and standing in line at midnight for VS to be sold. From the first track when those drums kicked in, you could tell that album was going to be different. It's still my favorite PJ album because of the drums.

Me too. I love the drums on VS. I was 13 when that album came out, first album I ever bought on CD. I learning drums at school, and Set up a kit made if different size Rubbermaid tubs at home and learned it front to back.

easily the greatest slight ever by the RRHOF and by the band. dave was the driving force behind pearl jam when they had their rise to fame. that is simply undeniable. those live shows 91-94 are what got so many people to love pearl jam. it's the biggest joke in the world that dave wasn't included.

It was the Hall's decison, not the band. It's well documented. Original and current drummer only. Was it fair? no, but that's how it works.

Dave is the reason the Unplugged show was as good as it was! Total Masterclass on how to play in that setting! What is undeniable for me is that the Pearl Jam sound was never the same again after Dave left, and that era of Pearl Jam never returned. I have been in bands with friends and the magic that is created by a unit is untouchable. We will never truly know what was cooking in the minds of everyone when these decisions were made, but at least the best of Pearl Jam has been immortalized in a few albums, and nothing can take that away from Dave

Definitely the best they ever had. The comments on how the energy left the band’s albums after he was fired are absolutely true. I’ve seen them a number of times after the sacking and the songs off Vs and Vitalogy weren’t the same. Awesome drummer!

The best drummer, not just of Pearl Jam. He makes you appreciate drums in a way that I have never appreciated as much. Just the best, what an incredible talent, and the production on Vs and Vitalogy really bring it out. Oh, and Abruzzo is a beautiful region in Italy. Thank you Mr Abbruzzese.

I was amazed at the drumming the first time I heard PJ. As soon as Dave left, I never listened to PJ again. His drumming was mind blowing to me, the fills the hi-hats on the live version of “Daughter”. Amazing drummer.

No lie....I haven't listened to any post-Dave PJ. I still LOVE everything he played on. HIS DRUMMING BUILT THAT BAND. The "first Dave", who played on Ten, laid down draggy, too slow rhythms. Hence why Dave A played ALL THE TEN SONGS INFINITELY SUPERIOR to Dave K. If you read this Dave, you NEED to read KZfaq comments written on the live shows you played with PJ....the comments are mostly about YOU! THANK YOU for all the chops you helped me develop when I was younger. Thanks for all the spice you put into/onto your cymbals....I learned so much. One of my top 5 drummers of all time! I love you with all my soul bro :)

30 years since Pearl Jam, but it's because of what Dave played on those albums/shows, that this time difference has become irrelevant. When you make something great, it remains great. No amount of time can diminish it. One of the best drummers I've ever seen - only once, Brixton Academy 1993 - but such a class act.

I never enjoyed the totality of the Pearl Jam sound after Vitalogy. Dave’s drumming on Vs. was the best mix of swinging funky rock/prog improvisation /unpredictability. IMO Dave was a force that helped make them exciting and funky in the beginning of the band’s development. The band’s groove never felt quite as robust after his departure. He’s a marvelous drummer🙏🙌

I have one of his drum sticks with my blood on it!!! It slipped out of his hand at one of the two night stands in Saint Louis with RHCP and Smashing Pumpkins! I saw a flash of light under the lights and next thing I knew a drumstick went through my upper lip! We saw the whole band when I got back from the ER and Eddie and the rest of them game me big hugs! Dave wasn’t there at that moment but when he found out what happened he sent me a letter in that mail with a sincere apology. He felt terrible, but I was really impressed that her cared enough to send me the letter, which I can’t find anymore, unfortunately. 😢

Dave’s hi hat work changed the way drummers played. Instead of playing Tom fills, he did this hi hat stuff that was never seen before and obviously influenced the gospel and hip hop scene. He deserves his recognition for inspiring that shift. It happened on the first SNL performance.

He did the right thing, Dave was a typical conservative aka fascist in hiding(in denial) who has almost killed Ed during the show on purpose, he has split his hand open, maybe you should listen to the other points of view to see the bigger picture, this kind of dynamic creates chaos in the harmony of the band which could have split the band down the line, it was inevitable.

No. Vedder was a singer who cant play 1 note on a instrument in 91, and by 93 started to play guitar, wrote a couple of shitty songs with 2 open chords and took over the band control. Took away the composer duties of Ament and Gossard and almost made PJ a solo project. Thats why since 1995 that band went down down on power, energy and quality. He is mediocre in every sense of the way and fucked up his band with his ego. Abruzzese made pearl jam sound like a bulldozer. Vedder always was a f commie hippie like into the wild soundtrack.

Great interview Dave, love your stories. Your Angus story reminded me of my story about my first time to interact with rock gods (to be) and it’s u brother! I was a senior in high school 1992 in Detroit and there to see the peppers and pumpkins, we never heard of pearl jam lol. After that show pearl jam was our band for life… I’d been to plenty of kiss, ozzy & maiden shows growing up, but only in large arenas. This was my first time to actually be so close to a band on stage and it blew my mind. To top it off being in the pit and moshing was like I’ve found my people… So actually Eddie was my first touching as he did a stage dive and got his sweaty ass shirt all over my face while kicking me with his doc martins. Next was u, the bathrooms were in the basement and I was walking up the stairs as you were coming down and I’m holding a drum stick that u tossed out. U stopped me and was like dude u got my drum stick, how cool! I’m like really that was u on stage? You’re like yeah, then I say u can just walk around here without security and u say nobody knows who we are yet. I still have the stick and that night changed my life forever. Thank u sir!

Im from Germany and Pearl Jam back then was my holy grail. AND DAVE made me love music so much … my band covered Why Go and that beat what a drive it has! I think the technical issues made me listen more intently. So well worth the extra effort to get the nuggets out. For me the big one is that you can try to explain yourself well but sometimes people are just going to take it the way they want to rather than listen to what was said or written. I don't get why we do that. It's no wonder we all have trouble getting along. Glad Dave isn't bitter and has learnt so much about himself. We've all got a lot to learn.

You were the best drummer they've had! I'm 43 years old and I seen Pearl jam 11 times or so something like that and they were always the tightest and seem the happiest when you were playing. In my opinion I don't know what went on behind the scenes but when you guys are out on stage jamming it was amazing!! And "go" is my favorite song btw!! Lol

1993 Pearl Jam was the first band I fell in love with after seeing the Unplugged on BBC 2 on a Friday evening. Stayed up until the early hours to record the 94 Fox Theatre gig on the radio. Dave was a massive part of the alchemy for me. It’s really poor how badly he was treated. Loved watching this conversation, great stuff 👍👍👍

First off I’m really glad I ran across this interview. Dave is one of my favorite drummers. I’ve been playing the drums since 1970 and I still play in a couple of bands to this day. We play out two or three times a month so I do know a bit about the instrument. No disrespect to any of the drummers for PJ. I just feel like Dave was the best fit for Pearl Jam I’m glad to see he’s doing okay.

Dave’s unique ability to contribute to the songs while making them interesting at the same time (with a very jazzy and unconventional approach) was to me one of the deepest influences listening to that era of PJ growing up. Monster drummer; to this day his time with them represents to me the best work they ever did.

PJ was never the same after he was fired. I think Vitology was the last album I bought. After that it was done IMO. Dave brought so much to that band.

I still love the VS album as a drummers album. The sound of that twangy rattle in the snare , the ever steady aggressive pulsating kick patterns-and the plush short sounding cymbals were everything that made it a unique sound. The delivery of that record on the drums still is a top 5 record for me. He crafted that. I tip my cap. Love that record.

I'm a 63 y.o guitarist and IMO young Dave is as much fun/talented to watch as Moon, Mitchell, and Bill Ward. I must have watched the Las Vegas 93 version of Dissident 500 times. The Las Vegas, limelight and Utrech concerts are astounding.

Dave and Jack will always be my favorite PJ drummers. There was an additional level to the band with them.

Dave was amazing and always clicked. Jack had the best groove and feel. I havent listened to PJ since Binural (which was matt camerons drumming and was good but i cant stand anything after this album).

Dave's drumming on the famous April 3, 1994 broadcast is mind blowing. The highlight for me is Why Go that night. Listen to how he starts it. Whole band was on fire but Dave was the driving force start to finish.

I remember as a teenager during the 90s EV didn’t get along with Dave A…it was kept low key and suddenly Jack Irons was their drummer…it shows EV was and always is the final say in the band. main songwriter, singer and leader, face of PJ…Dave A contributed to their 90s records which are arguably their greatest…he captures the fierceness of their sound and aggression. unforgettable

Back then Eddie always seemed like a try hard just trying to fit in and be cool. The way he'd act at the grasmmys or the way he'd yearn for the admiration of Cobain. Hell he stopped doing videos when Kurt said he hated their video. Dave was a great drummer and my personal fave from that bands history.

Dave's band and album Green Romance Orchestra was his finest moment after "GO". The whole Green Romance album is a giant drum solo performance if you will. Unreal music. Miss Green Romance Orchestra! Regroup it Dave !
