I worked in security dispatch for a casino for a number of years and we had one openly trans person who worked there. Every day I said good night as she was leaving without much of an acknowledgment until one day, she actually came back and said “thank you”. I asked for what? She said for consistently speaking to them everyday with kindness. I was floored. My response was “why wouldn’t I?” She responded that most people don’t. I was honored and heartbroken at the same time. Being a good person is so much easier than being a hateful one. And she was lovely. Just treat people as you would want to be treated. I didn’t do anything special, I treated her just like I treated everyone else but to know I made a difference in her day was humbling. Humanity, let’s do that!

Yea I have had similar experiences with different types of people and I’m always floored. In my mind we are all human. We deserve respect no matter what. I try to make my impact on the world small. Which is my way of saying I try to make every interaction as normal and gentle as possible because we all deserve that. It’s the only way we can be ourselves. If we just give people space to do it.

Thank you, Brando. As the mom of a trans woman, I can’t express my gratitude for your support in this matter. It’s impossible for others to understand how transgender individuals feel or how their families feel about their lives. I made a mistake early in this situation of saying it was her choice to live her life the way she wanted. She corrected me by saying it’s not a choice because nobody would ever make that choice. She did not choose it, it was her reality. She fought it for most of her life and wrestled with the desire to commit suicide. Ten years since transitioning she is on a positive path and is a licensed therapist. Her journey is helping others.

great - i'm glad your child is doing better, but your experiences and difficulties aren't a license to dictate to others or to emotionally blackmail people. your son has a mental illness and trying to make people say things that they know to be false doesn't make you the hero of this story. literally, every person who has a mental illness could argue it's kinder to deem them normal because that might make them feel better. the idiocy of the folks decrying ''anti-trans hate'' is that if we applied their arguments universally then they would be guilty of bigotry and hatred against schizophrenics and bipolar people and people with autism... etc. there's nothing kind about the people going after chappelle.

I'm glad to hear she's doing better. One thing I've learned about transgender suicidality is that it primarily effects those who are young and vulnerable, and thankfully declines over time. Not true for everybody, sadly, but it IS a statistical trend. I hope this fact brings you some comfort. I've been in love with a trans woman for four years. The one time she so much as joked about suicide I just about booted down her goddamn door like SWAT and sicced a friend of hers on her to make sure she was okay.

Sure, a joke can be written about anything, but not every “joke” should be told. It’s always bothered me comedians think they can say it anyway. There’s a difference between laughing with someone or at yourself and ridiculing someone, especially if it’s about a specific someone, or group, that is already marginalized, demonized, & powerless.

I want to thank you one more time. You are on the right page. Jim Carry IS an actor. He WAS pretending to be another person. That was his goal, that is his job. Transgender people who live authentically on the other hand, are NOT “pretending” to be …“someone else”. They were already forced to do that. For years, or even decades before they came out, they had to pretend to be what people, family, and society expected them to be. They did this so they weren’t disowned by family, or lose their job, their housing or get murdered on the street corner simply for being themselves. That is why such jokes are harmful. He basically just said “Trans folks are pretending”, which has been a conservative talking point for a lot of years now. If someone makes a comment once… it “may” be a joke. If you throw it in as an off handed remark, as the punch line, after you have already roasted for making similar comments, you are either pandering to a hateful demographic, or it’s how you really feel. Neither reflect on you positively. Punching down on a group that is already under constant attack is never funny, it’s pathetic. I have never found Dave funny.

It’s definitely crossed a line. I thought his story about Daphne was lovely, but clumsy at the end. I felt like the backlash there was overreaction, because it was clear he didn’t have any close friends who are trans, or he would have known that the “Only a man would…” part of the story would have been hurtful. If he’d known Daphne better, outside a few shows, I think he’d have avoided the whole problem. This whole thing is so simple. I want to be the kind of person that treats others with respect, so I’ll do my best with any pronouns asked of me, and all I ask in return is a little grace when I unintentionally mess up. I’ll never truly understand, but that doesn’t give me license to be a jerk, nor am I looking for an excuse to disrespect someone.

Chappelle has _never_ been better than that. He's punched down at the LGBTQ+ community for decades, not only with his comedy but in interviews as well. I'm big on free speech so I don't think he should be "cancelled." He can spout all the hateful bigotry he wants in his shows. If you think he's funny, fine. If others don't, fine. Entertainment is subjective But somehow, his fans (the one's so quick to defend Chappelle's free speech) seem to think it's inappropriate for people who don't find his bigotry funny to use their free speech to criticize him. Free speech doesn't mean freedom from criticism. If some find it offensive, they have the freedom to say so. And before you say Chappelle's critics are "thin-skinned" or "snowflakes" or "can't take a joke," I suggest you take a look around KZfaq at all the MAGAs angrily heckling liberal comics making jokes about Trump, climate change, immigration, etc. Steve Hostetter's videos of his hecklers are a good place to start.

@vannah3729 from my point of view is this. The LGBT community wants to be be treated equally like everyone else but you just can't say anything about them. Doesn't that negate the point of being treated equally? If everyone else can't be be fun of or joked about then why can't that group. That's saying we are equal but we are also excluded. Something like that; I'm not a comedian. Good jokes are based on truth, and the problem with Dave's trans "jokes" is that they aren't based on anything that is true. I used to watch The Chappelle Show all the time back in the day, but since he made a comparison of an actor with what I struggle with every day, implying that me and many other trans people are somehow "acting," I stopped watching his material. It felt like he used my lived experiences as some cheap joke that he felt he just had to use because he ran out of material and scraped the bottom of a barrel but only came up with grime without learning or educating himself about what gender dysphoria is like to us, what it's like to deal with hormonal imbalances, and just feeling like you're not who you're supposed to be. I can't count how many times I've contemplated and thought of committing suicide even with my parents support. I grew up with Dave's comedy, and supported him when most people wouldn't give him the time of day. It's so sad to see someone with a platform as big as his "punching down". At one point I did consider him one of the greats, but you can only be in that club when your entire career was great. Pryor, Carlin, Williams, Hedberg, Dangerfield, Etc. Sadly, a lot of his current comedy is just as you described it Brando, he's making commentary as "jokes", in the same way people use religion for hate. He's using comedy now as a club, and if anyone has a problem with it, "well it's comedy, it's OK, that's what comedy is". I would 110% disagree with that, look at someone like Carlin if you want to see comedy done right, and how punching up looks. If anyone is questioning their own sanity around Dave and how he has changed, look no further than him inviting Elon Musk on stage as his Billionaire friend(richest man in the world), and literally couldn't understand why the audience booed for 10 minutes straight. He even put down paying customers to his show stating the people booing must be in the cheap seats(who the F says that to paying fans?). He's a bully now who hides behind comedy the same way evangelicals hide behind the Bible, birds of a feather................

@@jacksmith-vs4ct Honestly, I think it all comes back to what happened between him and Comedy Central when he left his show and never got his would be 50 million payday. I don't know the details, but from what I can tell, he made some crap deals for his show early on, which most artist do when they are a "nobody" establishment wise. But when his show became a hit, he had a contract for peanuts and that led to the 3rd season where he upped his worth. But also seemed liked he didn't want to be a slave just to get the money he felt owed for how good the show became. If his show had bombed, Comedy Central took all the risk, and would he had paid them back for funds lost if it didn't do well? Of course not, so when it does well, your not entitled to those millions made, that's just the way the world works. He then fell off the grid and once he came back, this newer Dave appeared. When he hooked up with Netflix, the tone changed and so did the jokes. He also asked people not to watch the Chappelle Show on Netflix, as he wasn't getting paid due to the deal with Comedy Central, and Netflix allowed him to use their network to do whatever he wanted. And through that, some deal was reached and it was all good. Now I don't know if any, or some, or all of this is true, it's just what I pieced together from what I saw and read over many years. At the end of the day, we all make deals that often times don't work out best in our favors(cars, homes, loans), but we take the lesson and do better next time. But Dave seems to have let the Hollywood machine make him angry and pissed off and that's who we now see, someone treating people like he was treated because he can.

Dave Chappelle has a huge audience. By any standard, he's an influencer, although he probably hates that term (I'm sure he thinks he's too good for it). He has the potential to do good things with his influence, to change hearts and minds and make life a little easier for people who have a very hard time of it. Instead he uses his reach to be cruel, to punch down, just like any other bully. Is it cancel culture to decide I don't want to support him? Why should I be so afraid of "cancelling" someone that I have to watch people do and say things I find abhorrent? Why should I be afraid of a word that was created to try to shame me into continuing to support people who do and say horrible things? Let the other bullies, like Elon Musk, support him. It's also clear from this method actor 'joke' that everything he said about his trans 'friend', Daphne, in 'The Closer' was complete bullshit. He fully admits he didn't actually see her as the woman she was, but as a method actor playing a character. Using the death of a trans person to push an anti-trans agenda is disgusting, to say the least. It's really sad, because I used to love Dave's comedy. I wouldn't go so far as to say that he was never funny, or that he's incapable of being funny now, but it seems like he's turned away from seeking laughter in favor of clapter. Their ego or their self-image as "one of the good ones" is hurt. If they don't take a step back to reassess their words and/or actions, they will stay with their hurt ego until they start to resent progressives for calling them out or maybe even society for developing faster than they have. I wonder if social media exacerbates this problem because people get bombarded with "call outs" when they do or say something problematic. They don't have the time in to step back and think. In Chapelle's second Netflix special (I think), I saw a clip of him effectively saying "black people had to struggle longer, it's not fair queer people don't have to as well". I'm paraphrasing, but that was the moment I personally saw what I believe he is now: an angry old man. I'm white, cis, straight passing, so I've never had to deal with that sort of discrimination. But I liken it more to the people that are angry at college loan forgiveness, or anyone that's struggled who will not accept the legitimacy of another unless it looks and exists in the same way. Imagine being mad that people don't have to defecate in the streets because that's what mamaw and papaw had to do? So, yeah, I personally think it's okay to have a favorite Chappelle joke or skit of movie. I don't think it's okay to currently support this individual while they continue to spread a message of hate in the guise of comedy. There are so many more moral things wrong with this, but as a comedy snob, I've gotta a layer of pet peeve to wade through, too. (I'll be fine, if not a little grumpy). If you're a person that is the target of this joke and the words of a rando on the net mean anything: Your existence is valid. This mindset will not prevail. There will always be people like Chappelle, but there will also always be people like Brando that will put effort into making sure you know that you are not alone, no matter how different we all are.

No low is too low anymore. I honestly liked Chappelle's skits more than anything SNL did. He doesn't have the energy that he used to have anymore, I mean just listen to how he speaks now. Essentially they just blow loud dog whistles with a smile, and call it comedy. If people stop watching his old stuff, he wasn't cancelled, he suffered the consequences of his actions. I don't pretend to understand being trans. I don't know all of the science behind it, but it's because I don't care. I don't care because it is irrelevant. I don't care, becasue it doesn't affect my life in any way. I accept that trans people believe and feel that something about them is different. I accept that being trans is who they feel they are, and I have no reason to question that. I also look at it from the perspective, that people are born with all kinds of issues, like being born with missing limbs, or brain deformaties, or conjoined twins etc. There was a time when those issues were widely misunderstood. So I have no reason to doubt that there is something medical behind being born gay or trans. Why is it impossible that there is something different in the gene makeup or something else that causes people to be born differently? Just leave people alone and let them live their lives in whatever way makes them happy. Even if being LGTBQIA+ is a choice it shouldn't matter. It is their choice and they should have the right to make it without persecution.

A very concisely stated, thought-provoking analysis, Brando. I've commented something similar when I watched the clip of Dave telling that joke, but you really drilled down to the heart of why it didn't feel like a joke. The build-up is brilliant as Dave describes the bizarre experience of meeting his idol, Jim Carey, but the punchline just turned it instantly dark, like a bully who kids around a bit to get you to let your guard down, then suddenly sucker punches you in the kidney. Dave definitely is better than that. Again, great analysis - thank you.

Really appreciate this talk- it's spot-on. An actor isn't suffering from dysphoria when they're playing a part (generally). That is not an accurate analogy. What Chapelle did is what all anti-trans people do- they elevate their minor discomfort surrounding gender, born from their own misunderstanding (often seld-imposed) over a trans person's inner suffering. So they add on more suffering to the trans person because they lack empathetic understanding. So, they victimize themselves and blame the trans community. Not humorous in any way.
