I was in the Navy (United States Navy, to be precise, but this seems to apply to yours as well), and I can vouch that a petty officer who handles clerical duties is formally known as a "yeoman." Not to be confused with the commissioned officer who handles clerical duties, who is formally known as a "chaplain."

I never would have guessed “cubic” for 1 Across, but as soon as Simon said it, I could see the reasoning: copper is Cu, and you write with a Bic, thus Cu-Bic.

You might have already realised but 'writer' *makes* copper into three-dimensional, i.e. add a writer to cu to make three-dimensional. Hence 'bic'.

Garp clue is brilliant. I happen to know that The World According to Garp is Dave Gorman's favourite book (he said it at Q+A at end of his Googlewhack Adventure), so this is spot on!

I love the Bluth crosswords! Simon, if you haven't read John Irving, you have a treat coming. "Setting Free the Bears" is a good place to start (I nearly wrote "approachable"); "World According to Garp" is a lot of fun but you may have to know New England pretty well to get some of it. I'm always amazed that someone who can quote so much poetry seems to have no acquaintance whatever with literary prose. Grab a cup of tea or a glass of sherry, find a cat for your lap, and spend a cheerful afternoon losing yourself in a great big novel: few things are such fun!

I too love Bluth's puzzles and always do them when they appear. I solved this one earlier and, like you, did not realise the full extent of this homage to John Irving. For instance, I knew about Garp and cheerfully used that knowledge in the answer to 23A. If pushed I could also name Prayer for Owen Meany and Cider House Rules as written by him, but didn't connect the answers dotted around the puzzle. The bibliography on his Wiki page puts us right. The beauty of seamlessly converting book titles into wordplay elements is a joy to behold, particularly when evoking anagrams as in Hotel New Hampshire in 4A, Owen Meany in 9D and Setting Free The Bears in 2D. My regard for Bluth has gone up a notch, and it was pretty high to start with. This was a great way for him to celebrate the fact that Irving is 80 today. [ My heart was in my mouth after you wrote in EPIC at 20A - well done for realising the problem. ]

Just the other day I thought, "You know, if you take one of the Hs out of Hampshire and rearrange the letters, you get Seraphim."

I'm subscribed to this channel mostly for the Sudoku (in fact, y'all were the ones who got me into variant sudoku in the first place!!) -- but I'm glad I clicked on this video, even as someone who knows little to nothing about crosswords. The wordplay in here was absolutely stunning, and your solve was bonkers.

Congrats on 450k! Excellent puzzle! Great references to John Irving's books and great clues all round. Advantage is a synonym of interest in Chambers as in 'it's in your own interest to.../it's to your own advantage to...' I think 'cubic' is okay for 'three-dimensional' just like wild cat could define lion or tiger, three dimensional could define spherical or cubic or something else. Only clue I solved before you was YEOMAN. As usual you were miles ahead. I saw BIC for writer but like you was waiting for a position indicator as I hadn't seen 'making' being used like this before, I get the logic though now. Favourite clue has to be 6d, beautifully done :D

In response to your last 3 hopes, in reverse order: I did have a go, I did get through it (much much slower) and I did enjoy it - immensely! And then came to watch your solve, and marvelled at how quickly you got some words, and was pretty chuffed at the very few that I got quicker than you (jpeg, haha). Kicked myself for not getting the John Irving connection in spite of it staring you in the face. Some more of these approachable cryptics please Simon, while we admire Mark's brutal efforts once a month from afar.

A couple of months ago I would have thought this whole thing was just gibberish, but now I am screaming at the screen: "initially Owen" and "Meany worked" are two clues, Simon, and why can't you of all people not see immediately what "initially" and "worked" mean here... :-)

While it's marvelous to see Mark decipher Zoothapsis, it's much more satisfying to see clever wordplay on words I've actually used, and while I can't get most of this puzzle on my own, the moment of finding JPEG before Simon was very satisfying

Don't quite understand the reasoning for 1a. So, writer is BIC and copper is CU, but why does CU come before BIC?

I know he regularly says there's just a language to cryptic crosswords that you learn over time and I do REALLY want to incorporate these into my regular puzzles which is why I keep watching these hoping I'll catch on. But I'm sorry, "very adult book" = "V A New Testament" = -"vant-" just makes this not fun for me.

If you're curious, you might try the Daily Mail's cryptic crossword, which is online. It's one of the easiest cryptics I've found (for me as a Canadian who gets tripped up on British English often) and it rarely incorporates the tricky "you just have to know it" cryptic stuff. (Note: I don't want to get political but I don't endorse anything else that has ever appeared in the Daily Mail. Only the cryptic crossword!)

@@emhornerbooks We do the Daily Telegraph cryptic in Australia - and they have two versions. One that has both cryptic and regular clues (training wheels) and a slightly harder cryptic. Both of these I liken to kindergarten and grade 1 or 2 cryptics. The Sydney Morning Herald cryptic is like Year 12 or senior high school level - which is really hard to work on without training. So watching this show is excellent as it shows me so many extra ways of how to work out an answer.
