Pure joy, Simon, pure joy. In The Netherlands I used to do cryptics but in Dutch they work very differently, with heavy emphasis on very clever cryptic definitions. The language lends itself much less to wordplay than English. Since living in Albion I do the Telegraph back page and Toughy and have come to delight in their quintessential Britishness. Please post more crossword solves.

I don't speak Dutch. Would you care to elaborate a bit about what makes Dutch crosswords different from English ones? It sounds interesting.
@frschaddelee
@frschaddelee Жыл бұрын
@@AFastidiousCuber I suppose there are two main reasons: cryptic crosswords aren't as ingrained in our culture compared to the UK, and our language doesn't lend itself well for this type of wordplay in general. We lack the abbreviations, double meanings and homophones that make the English puzzles so elegant and clever, especially with these longer sentences. It's not impossible to still do the same tricks but it's easier to rely on short and witty definitions.

Reduction in chemistry is the opposite of oxidation - oxidation is the loss of electrons and reduction is the gain of electrons in a redox reaction.

Hmm, good question. it takes practice, cryptics get easier the more you learn about the clues and abbreviations etc. it's interesting how as the years go by more are slowly being added and many are so now so old fashioned, (but I love learning about older words through crosswords. ) back to the word though: pretty much only a vowel could go between s and n. so- its not too hard to try each vowel there, then run through the alphabet trying for the first letter. Or...in English we don't have many words with a consonant before s, only p or t as far as I can think, so you narrow down the options quickly and, with added experience, it just looks wrong - nothing fits. ooh I love words :)
@martysears
@martysears 2 жыл бұрын
because they would really have to both be vowels in the missing spaces, so you're basically just considering AS_N, ES_N, IS_N, OS_N, US_N... and if there was a word that fitted one of those I think it would immediately leap out at you

The theme is more The Chase than Bradley Walsh. The Chase is a quiz show Bradley hosts which pits contestants against one of six professional quizzers each with a nickname that was used as an answer: the BEAST, the GOVERNESS, the VIXEN, the MENACE, the SINNER/MAN, and the DARK/DESTROYER. Other answers such as CEREBRA and TRIVIAL, and clues that used words like "brainbox" and "clever clogs" also suggest the quiz show theme - and, of course, the answer in the centre of the puzzle was CHASE.

Pardon my ignorance on crosswords, but is this sort of word and structure play that Simon used to solve the clues a standard part of crosswords, except with easier puzzles you can get the clue without diving into that level of word play, or are these types of clues particular to a certain style or publisher of crosswords? Because I’ve always noticed crossword clues being worded a bit...strangely sometimes, but never noticed this sort of multiple levels of clues within clues and the answer itself being inside the clue as well.

IME of cryptics, in crosswords by other setters, the wordplay-indications are usually more straightforward. Some of Dave's are a bit unusual. "Essentially" for middle letter, for example. And "every so often" for alternate letters -- I've seen similar from other setters, but only very rarely, and Dave Gorman's used it twice in the only two crosswords by him I've seen (this one and another video on this channel).

They're unfortunately not that popular in the US, I'd even say largely unknown. It'd be like trying to have the best snooker players competing in world tournaments operating in the US....The setters for these use UK dictionaries like Chambers and are full of wordplay using foreign words and roots, slang and archaic European turns of phrases, lots of international places and terms most people in the US are unfamiliar with. And clever wordplay is just not as much an American thing, which is why they're considered an acquired taste. There's just something about British culture and how words are used that lends itself well to these, like in the way someone will say "I haven't got a scooby" or "get that down your gregory"....The New Yorker recently started doing some again, but they're nowhere near the level of these both due to the audience and that the top constructors who have been doing them for a long time are overseas.
