The key to understanding this song is in a few key lines. Dave wrote this song because he realized his drinking on tour was getting out of hand. The lyric “Bartender please, fill my glass for me with the wine you gave Jesus that set him free after 3 days in the ground.” is Dave wishing he could have a drink that set him free instead of confining him. Because the wine he’s been drinking sure isn’t the wine that set Jesus free. This is reenforced in the second half of the song when he changes the lyric to “Because the wine that’s been drinking me, came from vine that strung Judas from the devil’s trees roots, deep,deep in the ground.” Referencing the wine he is drinking as evil. There is one other lyric that points at this being a song about alcohol abuse. “When I was young I never thought about it but now I can’t get it out of my mind.” Basically referencing that something that never used to be an issue has now become an obsessive crutch. Anyway sorry for the long post but thought you’d love some insight. KEEP DOING MORE DAVE PLEASE!
@tykejack2 жыл бұрын
It's a song about a man suffering from alcoholism and the struggle the alcoholic has. It's about escaping problems, not escaping alcoholism. When Dave asks for the wine that set Jesus free, he's talking about drinking himself to death and he sees death as the solution to his problem. This is also substantiated through his reflection "What's life?" meaning that he doesn't see an importance to life anymore. That's what he didn't think about as a little kid and now he wants to hide from his life, his world, and the responsibilities of being an adult. Later in the song he flips the verse from him drinking wine, to wine drinking him, meaning that he's been corrupted and has succumbed to alcoholism and it has, presumably, destroyed and/or taken over his life. At some point he used alcohol to escape his problems and that was Judas's alcohol, and now he wants alcohol that will set him free of his life, which was Jesus's alcohol. He doesn't want to be free of alcoholism, since he's literally asking for more alcohol, he just wants his life to end which is why he's asking for his brother not to forget him and his sister not to regret him when he dies.
@dianeespinoza86472 жыл бұрын
Dave Matthews Band has many spiritual songs mentions often they are non- denominational. The wine of Christ is a metaphor. The entire song is a parabolic teaching. So you can use it to inspire your journey with alcoholism, I imagine it fits many scenarios where faith is realized.

A lot of people give Dave a bad wrap for being “frat music” but if you really dig deep into their collection (especially live albums) you see the magic the band can bring
@amyelizabeth5292 жыл бұрын
Man, I never once thought of them in that way...that was just how they got started in VA. Frat boys who heavily imbibed on merry libations (no offense), I don't believe would be able to delve into the sobering introspective, existential and deeply personal lyricism.

I said bartender my girlfriend and my bestfriend and his girlfriend met him randomly before the show. It was like the 6th or so song and started strumming the guitar and said this is for some good friends I just met. Played bartend. Crowd was like 25,000 but that song felt personal and just to us in that moment. Now he probably had it in the mix and whatever but he didn't have to hang out and say that. Thank You Dave.

THANK YOU! THANK YOU!!! Been requesting this one for a while. Dave Matthews - born in South Africa, raised there, London and Virginia. Father was John Matthews, a founding physicist with Large Hadron Collider. Father died when Dave was 17. Mother is a painter & artist. Sister killed in Africa by mob violence. Met Tim Reynolds in Charlottesville at Miller's, where Tim played music and Dave bartended. Dave was raised a Quaker Christian. Tim is Buddhist. Tim and Dave wrote most early DMB songs high on pot brownies in Dave's mom's basement. Tim can't sing. Auto accident sent shards of glass into throat, damaging vocal cords. Something about Dave Matthews songs played just acoustically in an intimate setting is quite spiritual, like you were experiencing. And I was also impressed by how many songs they played. The song feels like you're on a spiritual journey. I remember some time ago Dave was interviewed and he mentioned he took his family to an indigenous celebration(Somewhere in Australia maybe). They were sitting around a fire and the people from the tribe singing moved them all. You can here that vocal style in the intro/outro here. It resonates the core of your soul.

True story - my now ex- husband (a cop) and I saw DM band in Hotlanta (Atlanta) 2009. Joints were being passed around endlessly . My ex is 6”4’. I snuck behind him and took a hit off a joint passed to me. He turned around and saw me and the look on his face was haunting. Later on the way home he we talked about it. He shared that an off duty cop would NEVER try to arrest or confront any concert goers partaking in pot smoking. He said it would not end well for him. But The DM band is AMAZING!! Please check out their song “Crash” . I’ve been to a few concerts and that concerts was one of the best!! ✌🏼 Love you J!!!

Man this is one of the best versions of this song. There’s another GREAT version where he’s in a cabin sitting in front of a fire place singing for Jane Goodall and her 2 dogs. AMAZING

Hey Jamel - People love to hate on Dave, but he and his band are undoubtedly great musicians. If you love the dead and love jams with transitions and great talent, you’ll love Dave Matthews Band. Went to a lot of their shows and mind blown every time.

First time I heard this song was watching this reaction video-you nailed it brother, my reactions paralleled yours and that was quite a spiritual cry for help and assistance, while honoring the creator with his voice and music. Fantastic! I have never listened to much of Dave before i saw this.

No matter how many times I hear this I get a bit choked up. I'm not a very emotional man. But I have to say I had tears in my eyes. Very powerful and spiritual. Thank you Lord for this one again.

Oh my goodness.... If you want people to be amazed by Dave... bring the band in! I can't believe how many comments want more Dave and Tim acoustic songs. It's amazing no doubt and I could still listen to it all day myself but... The best of Dave is hearing the way all the instruments complement and play off of each other. You can listen to one song hundreds of times and still hear different, new things and nuances in the way all the musicians play together. Amazing reaction as always my man, but we need to JAM! React to a full band Bartender live performance and compare the two now!!!

Absolutely loved your reaction! I’ve been going to DMB shows since the late ‘90’s. Your reaction was pure and this version of Bartender is one of my all time favs! You definitely need to react to Grey Street!

Jamal, do yourself a favor and get this concert on Blu Ray disk & invite your brothers over & crank it up!! If you enjoyed this song, you will enjoy the rest of the two plus hours for sure. This recording is widely considered as one of the best ever as I'm sure you felt when you first heard this song. A purchase you will not regret!!

You should definitely watch „Lie in our graves“ from the same show. I don’t know how Tim achieved this, but the One Note Guitar Solo sends shivers down my spine.

Just stumbled upon you today, Jamal. Your assessment of that song and Dave’s voice is spot on. Much appreciated. I highly recommend that entire show along with any Red Rocks/Gorge shows. Glad I found you!! Have a great day!!

I have been waiting FOREVER to see you get into Dave Matthews!! I'm so happy you started with this song, it's perfect. He should've gotten an award for this performance, it is stunningly beautiful. The Radio City concert is amazing entirely. Thank you so much, bro

This is the best review of any song! I have a Dave addiction, (as I sit here Dave band tee) and the reason I love this is because for 26 years I have not been able to explain how this bend makes me feel and you've just done it. It's a religious experience, the world melts away and you let Dave nourish your soul. He returns something in you that you didn't know you've lost.

As far as rhythmic timing and feel…Dave might just have one of the best right hands around ✋🏽
