I usually try to mix fast, and once I find my toes tapping, I know I'm getting close. Then, I back off for a day, return, and start tweeking things in the mix. However, it can be a bit tedious going through to audition all the plugins...and there are many! But I'll also say through trial, error, and time, I've found a few of my go to plugins (mostly Slate, a few Waves, and fewer Plugin Alliance), and I'm finally comfortable with realizing I don't have to try and use every plugin I have...like Mr. Pensado once said, "Sometimes, less is more."

Out - Friggen-Standing! What a great wealth of audio-spiritual concepts as they relate to being... not only an inspired engineer but being a full human being; confident and bold, humble and willing to be challenged and praised (or not) regardless! Super stuff Dave! (& Warren) And I'm not even 35 minutes in... Had to comment now (while still listening) with the emotional connection I feel listening to this...non technical yet superbly philosophical and extremely valid offering of wisdom for all of us. Bravo! It's also great to see your mutual respect of each other shine through in such an easy demeanor. I completely identify with so much of this conceptually and practically. (I am relatively unknown after 20+ years as an engineer but still very fortunate and satisfied and much of this echoes exactly why) Thank you guys.

I'm late to this video, But loved it! I have seen a lot of Dave Pensado's videos over the years and I think he is great at his craft, and as a person with a great character! Love all your videos Warren! I'm 61 and a basement songwriter and I just like it when someone says I like that one(Song)! We all have a journey to make and at the end of the day, it's the journey that mattered! I'm not one who cares about what people will think about me when I gone, I care about what people think about me or life in general now! Life is for the living, and if we can have something like music give all people a connection, to me it is the only language that all people understand! I'm just rambling on now, but I would say that I love what I do musically but never was committed to it and I think Dave was spot on with what he said about commitment in general! To both you and Dave, THANKS!

I felt the interview he did with you, Warren, was excellent. But this? This is a several levels beyond . I hesitate to comment on specifics, other than to tell you that there were many, too many to categorize. Lot's of people can talk the ins and outs about a subject, not too many can speak fluently at this deeper level, but that's just what you and Dave did...bravo!!

Hey Warren, I remember watching this video last month and the thing that stuck with me the most was when Dave/you said you need to "Commit" before anything good can happen. What I love about these vids is the guys obviously know their stuff but they don't try to 'big it up' as if it's all one huge mystery beyond the realms of the bloke in the street. Just simple methods and principles any one can use regardless of their equipment and experience. Good to see that in this ever-obfuscatory world :)

I started off with 6 years of classical piano training. Then a family member got tired of doing remixes so he asked if I could compose something for him. Eventually others at my highschool liked my beats but they had no means of recording, so I bought a an Audio Technica AT2020. Once I had songs recorded, they needed to mixed so I learned. Once my mixes improved, artists wanted to be competitive with the rest of the music out in the world, so I learned how to master. In todays world, you have to be able to provide a finished product because alot of artists are looking for convenience. To follow in Dave's food examples, you're going grocery shopping, you want milk bread and apples, you could go to a dairy farm, squeeze fresh milk, go to an artisan bakery buy bread, go to an orchard pick apples, or you can go to your neighbourhood convenience store and pick up all three items - each of which may not be the best quality but atleast you finished your list. That being said, the best mix I've done, I didn't record and the best master I've done, I didn't mix.

I love the part about commitment. Taking the leap. Just going for it. I grew up in Norway just being a kid in love with music and sound. Now I live in Vancouver, Canada making a living from writing, mixing and producing music. Never looked back. Decided to move to Canada on the last day of a 5 week North American tour. Had all my stuff shipped from Norway. Then again post a not so fruitful marriage I just said..#$#@ it, moving to Vancouver. I literary had $500 in my pocket, 2 suitcases, 1 cat upon my arrival in Vancouver. Stayed at a shady hostel for a week to figure things out. Now, in a home, have a kid, a gorgeous girlfriend and a decent studio and never have been more productive and excited about music in general. Full throttle ahead. So yes, sometimes...you have to just commit to a decision and go for it. Despite how mad it might appear and seem to others and yourself at the moment. It is hard, almost impossible to tame a dream and goals. And you never should compromise or tame it. Let it loose, whatever it is. Wherever it is.

What a great interview! Best one I've seen with Dave thus far! A casual conversation between 2 respected mix engineers about what they love most. No sell sell. And mutual respect given, without becoming sycophantic or oleaginous, as I've seen delivered on other shows by other interviewers. Another truly inspiring talk / discussion .. somebody once said ' we tend to agree most with people who are telling us what we want to hear & what we want to believe ' which if you are interested in psychology & philosophy is in itself a talking point.. Once again I hear commit .. by the way of this pathways leading to other skills .. I was incredibly shy until I spent 5 years working in a swimming pool ..Mostly teaching .. which taught me how to project .. public speaking .. got me triathalon fit & since water has no feelings about people one way or another I became fascinated by the psychology .. mesmerism .. hypnotism .. & the motivational side of coaching .. I learnt a lot about learning .. muscle memory & unconcious memory .. I had a band as well .. but I made more money from the catering on the side than the gigs so .. But I digress cheers .. Warren when you say 'up north ' do you mean further up than York ? lol

In particular I liked what Dave said about people not buying instrumental or acapella music and that we should lead the attention of the listener from vocal to instruments, back to vocal, back to an instrument and so on to keep them engaged during the song. I had never thought about that at all. I am actually getting back into music after a 4-year break and have been taking some time to check out advances in gear and stumbled across your´s and Dave´s channels and I have been completely blown away by the detail and information you are giving and I am very keen to put it all into practice! Watch this space :-) Thank you both ever so much.

Hi Warren! Thanks again for another great video! This one was really fantastic! The two of you showed that despite who you are known to be, you are regular approachable people. What you do with these videos is great, because you show everyone who you really are. We all appreciate that you take the time to reach out to "us"' and ask us to tell you what we think, and what we do when we make music. Yes, no matter who a person is or what level someone is at, we can all learn from each other. I also appreciate that in this interview/video we were able to see the intellectual side of both you and Dave. I can truly relate to what you both said in this interview about making a commitment, and the non-linearity of life. Very to the heart for me! I could ramble on hear forever, but I won't. Thanks! Stu

I Love that the Interview has been reversed as I found you through Dave's Site & am continuously blessed as a result from both of you. Finally I can make a contribution as it gives me great hope & I fully agree with you when you say that having a level of musicality & playing a musical instrument helps in communication. I do live sound at Church & because of my understanding of Band dynamics, I am able to create the perception where some of the muso's fall short or curb the over enthusiastic adrenaline based performance that is to come when I sound check my gain structure. I can then translate that information to the muso's for them to take & better improve on their delivery or dis guard it which ever they decide :-) I so prefer the controlled environment of a Studio though that allows for more personality to come out with the subtleties that you speak of & am starting to Gig like Mad now to raise the funds to get my Mac, Logic & Pro-tools DAW to better expand on my ability. Until then though I aim to download a free version of Reaper to still be able to work on projects & build on skill. What is your take on this as an interim solution?

what dave said at 24:24 made me emotional. I've had some rejection seriously cut me down even when my confidence was really high and i was proud of what i was doing. My audio work sounds vastly different from everything that i've heard both commerical and amateur and some people haven't liked it, but others have. Including some of my idols like adam nolly getgood and my sound teacher. I will use what he said to keep me motivated to not compromise my own style to appease the masses. I will continue to put my own love and spirit into my work. Whether people love it or hate it. I don't want to be the same.

Wow... just wow, and I mean it. I'm "only" 3/4 in and have to say this interview is gold. I've been following you both for a while and appreciate your style, attitude and craft but this is like a premium opportunity to "eavesdrop" into a conversation between 2 friends and professionals that goes beyond the usual technical tips like use this compressor, or apply this lowcut etc. This is a life lesson and a nice intellectual exchange. Master your skills until they are second nature but never forget you are selling emotions - if you're 5 dB and/or 500 Hz off but people LOVE your mix, you've done a great job., if you are "perfect to the bit" but you killed the spirit of the track, you blew it ;) I agree with you Warren 100% about learning being a skill, spot on, mate... And, to combine it with Dave's take on creativity (which I love), I guess it all sparks from curiosity. I love hanging out with creative people too, and I've never met a creative person who wasn't also curious or non-creative people who were curious. We're all different and it's fine but... if you are low on curiosity/creativity, you're missing out A LOT! I love his idea of the rules of thirds applied to mixing. Although, I've been knowing it for years from graphic design and photography, I've never REALLY made the connection. A great tip for balancing and panning, it helps a lot for those visually inclined. I could go on for days about how every couple of seconds I was going "Yeah, man... exactly!" but I'll spare you that. Suffice to say that yes... crossing over to other fields, "going interdisciplinary" to use fancy terms, pays up greatly. Learn some music and some instrument if you're an engineer and learn some audio skills if you're a musician, you won't regret it. Keep up the marvellous work and thanks .
