NOT defending Rubin here really, but he most certainly had to have studied the Tanakh (Hebrew Bible) as he was raised in Conservative Judaism, in an observant Kosher home. He made his Bar Mitzvah, as well as studied a year abroad at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev. He also attended Hebrew school as a lad. (despite at times claiming he grew up in a "secular household".)

Most conservative religious individuals no idea what’s in their holy books and when faced with inconvenient passages for the first time have to go searching for apologetics to explain how the horrible things included in them aren’t actually that horrible.
