Dave loves it! He says it may be his favorite Tool song that he's heard so far. [This is his 19th Tool reaction] High praise indeed!

It’s not about Bill Hicks. They respected Hicks annd sample him in “3rd Eye.” And L. Ron gets his due in “Aenima.” It’s about demagogues that paint themselves as martyrs for a cause.

Paul actually wrote the bass line for Eulogy. He had written about half of the songs off of this album before leaving. It is about L Ron Hubbard.

Great bangin’ tune. Tool mixes their stuff really well. I just saw an interview where Maynard was asked if the band ever disagreed when it came to mixing. He said it’s “always a fight to the f#@&ing death”. Can’t imagine it being much better. Great reaction. Thanks guys.

I was a huge fan of the undertow album and that was the album that started reel me in to becoming a huge fan. But when aenima came out and I listened to this track I was blow away and knew that this band was something really special and I felt like this song was really the blueprint to their sound from that point on.

Top tier Tool for me. After Undertow they skyrocketed to GOAT level here at Track 2. A nice, chill 15-sec scream forgotten before the epic one on The Grudge.

There were tributes in this record to Bill Hicks. The song Third Eye has bull hicks in it. I don’t think they would have a song shitting on Bill Hicks just to turn around and give the man tribute in the record.

Maynard was good friends with Bill Hicks, so I'm not sure the tone of the song would suggest it's about Hicks, but could be in a way I suppose. In the early days of Tool Bill would open shows for Tool. Bill's voice is also in a couple songs.

i have heard that the song could be about maynard killing his ego, or letting go of the ego . kind of shedding is shadow . i dont know if thats true but the song could really fit with alot of things like most tool songs. cheers

Great reaction! real intricate drumming and quirky sounds throughout. This one was a banger. Here's one for Dave to check. this one bass has real interesting guitar, bass, and drums and cool guitar solo. also features some great scenery (7 national and state parks sites) Its new from alt funk band from Ind., The indigos. Nandi Bushell does a wicked drumcover of the Tool song 46 and 2. She's a prodigy and has been drumming since she was 5. She was a guest drummer for the Foo Fighters when she was 11 on the song "Everlong" live I know OTP!! Go to her channel and listen to her 46 and 2 cover lol!

TOOL tends to have more open-ended lyrics than lyrics with one specific meaning. With that being said, L Ron Hubbard is what I’ve always seen as the subject, as the band lived in LA and Scientology is very popular there (at least as far as where that cult is most practiced). But the lyrics are also intentionally nonspecific and seem to point towards any cult of personality or wannabe martyr who preaches and wants attention while not actually wanting to die as a martyr like Jesus did. Someone who thinks they know everything and wants to be hailed as a leader and a messiah while being full of shit and having a huge ego.

I can't understand how anyone would say that this was about Bill Hicks who was their friend. This is not a song you write about a friend so I am most definately with the "L. Ron Hubbard" train. Tool has clear dislike for Scientology and the lyrics fit fine with the empty words and the crazy antics of Scientology.
