I took up dry cleaning and pressing during the lock downs and have just recently picked up BLED and HOP whitening and stain removal. John, be methodical in your experimentation and you'll be surprised at how much fun and success you'll have.

Dave Stevens has always been respected but I think the labels he worked for is what has kept the values down. I still need that Planet Comics.

I’ve got Richard to thank for turning me on to Dave Stevens a few years ago when I first found this channel. I picked up a Planet Comics 1 in an 8.5 last year, but would love to upgrade it to a 9.8 some day. Now quiet down with the Dave Stevens chat so I can finish my cover collection quest without going broke. 😂

I grabbed an "Alien Worlds" #4 in a 9.6 last year for under 60 bucks. Could not believe my luck. I want a "Planet Comics" #1, but it's going to be a while to fit it in the budget with current price trends.

Great show as usual, guys. I think "Planet Comics" #1 inspired the Mod gang in "Book of Boba Fett," at least a little bit. I have loved Dave Stevens since I first saw "The Rocketeer"; I was a junior in high school when the movie came out, and something about it really clicked with me. I already had a crush on Jennifer Connelly, of course, but the art deco / diesel punk / Golden Age Hollywood world I got to see was amazing. From there it was just a short hop to discovering Dave's work in comics. Most of my Dave Stevens stuff is Rocketeer books, but in recent years I have been collecting some of his other stuff. One piece of Dave's work that I love is the cover he did with Gilbert Hernandez for "Girl Crazy" #1; it's neat to see two such different styles merged together. The last thing I would like to point out about Dave's legacy is how many great artists he inspired; we wouldn't have Adam Hughes without Dave Stevens.

Howdy fellas!!! Regular listener first time commenting. I’ve always been a 80s indie fan since the 80s!!! Was never a big supes fan , always into horror and sci-fi so I naturally gravitated towards indies!!! Nice to see em finally getting love , except for the rising prices…

Hi guys. I'm definitely loving your introduction to Dave Stevens. I absolutely love his art. He was totally unknown to me six months ago. I've managed to pick up Alien Worlds 4 and just found Jonny Quest 5 for £25 after watching this video. Fingers crossed it's a decent copy.... 🤔

I’m doing my first show next weekend, and in the selection of books that I’ll be taking will be a healthy mix of good 80’s indies, plus the standard golden / silver / bronze / copper books. I’m packing about 20 long boxes and very excited for my first experience behind the table 😂

Also, Stevens was famously slow because he was so meticulous with his art and self-critical, so relatively little of his art was published during his lifetime. Eclipse, Comico, Pacific - 1980s Independents, fantastic comics from publishers who dared. All the German I knew by age 10 I had learned from watching 1960s World War II movies and of course Hogan's Heroes ("Schultz, you dumbkopff!"). Dan Jurgens' run on the 1998 Thor series is also underappreciated but excellent.

Great show as always. My Mondays are always a good day because of your drops. Even Heathcliff would like Mondays now. Regarding magazine racks, I recall back in the day when we would go to the grocery store my father would always go to the magazines while my mother shopped. I would want to go to the toy aisle and hope that the magazines were next to the toys so that my father would not rush me away. Does this mean we are getting old? Now my kid wants to have me take him to the toys no matter what store we are in, what comes around goes around

31:54 100% agree with this take. I sell comics at shows, and I encourage people to check prices online (I think I have very fair prices, so it only helps). Also, is someone is in the way of another customer, I gently ask if they can step aside to allow the other customers, but that’s a rarity. Almost all show attendees are pretty considerate and know that polite works both ways.

The Daredevil # 179-181 run was a big thing in 1981...promoted a lot by big dealers...Lone Star Comics had Frank Miller signing many copies and remember picking up two sets of these numbers...( need to pull those out of backstock)...met Dave Stevens in 1987 at a north Florida comic show...nice guy and still have my Joker vs Batman print signed by him. Need to dig through my old comics to see what books I still have by him...

I hadn’t thought about it prior to watching this video, but the freezer thing should work. I’ve heard of people cleaning their designer jeans this way. It makes sense if the source of the smell is coming from a form of bacteria that would be destroyed at the cellular level as a result of freezing. It’s the same process one might use to freeze vegetables to make a abundantly flavorful melomel.

Another awesome episode fellas. Love tuning in every week. I’ve been a fan of Dave Stevens art for a while, as well as a huge Jonny Quest fan! As such I grabbed a couple of Jonny Quest 5s a while back. But like you all described, there’s a sudden surge in sales on the book. Does anyone know what triggered the sudden spike in interest? Did I miss some Dave Stevens or Jonny Quest announcement this week?

I caught onto titles like Badger and Nexus while living in Madison, Wisconsin a few years ago. The first issues of those titles, along with a third, Whisper, were published by Capital Comics, which was based in Madison. I suspect the local community purchased those titles in disproportionate numbers, which made them relatively easier to find from local dealers decades later. That experience makes me wonder how regional differences affect what collectors decide to buy. In your travels, have either of you noticed significant differences in what’s available from one area to another?

John, please reread Daredevil #131 again - have a look at Bullseye's first kill, which is almost immediate upon his introduction; I know he had that strange giant-bow/arrow moment that was felt very much like a Bat Man TV villian moment however I thought he hit the page pretty hard in his origin in 131 & 132. I too thought that Miller made him the psychopath that we all enjoy - however i don't think Frank deserves credit for that. That German accent too...I think you need to offer your subscribers you reading a Blitzrieg issue! Brilliant! John, i think can make Powers/House of X more attractive to you - you'll appreciate X-Men #96 like never before after you've read the series - the first issues are a bit tough to work out what's going on, but HoX #2 is fantastic!

Guys, check out Angel Wings for one of the best war comics out there. The adventures of a female pilot in the War in the Pacific. Epic story over 7 issues and _very_ good girl art (to say the least) and just some of the most beautiful art in general I've ever seen in comics.

John just a note. I would be careful with the “advanced” cleaning techniques you mentioned. I have seen folks who tried these techniques and received multiple purple labels from cgc or significant downgrades in grades. They seem to be dinging them. Anyways keep up the good work. Always enjoy the show. .

"Point One" was Marvel's notion of an "extra" issue, usually that was a done-in-one that summed up the idea of the character that would be good for sampling a series you didn't normally get. Extending that brand to these one-shots had a bit of a "Super-Team Family" effect where being consistent with the branding led to odd naming. Pricing at the table - dealers aren't afraid to check the internet and price things based on the latest info, so no reason the customer can't do the same. M2: Funny thing was Defalco said they didn't want to get bogged down in future-culture (like the Legion of Super-Heroes) so the setting of the books was "now" (at the time), so it was actually a bit like the original 60's timeframe had just gotten extended.

I don't even think there'd be anything wrong with John calling out a politician who had read 'My New Order' (a collected history of Hitler speeches) and then used phrases such as 'immigrants are poisoning the blood of this country' in his own speeches recently. Call em out John, there are NOT fine people of both sides!
