they were not alternative, maybe for one record. They were a pop band
@antunivanovic
@antunivanovic Жыл бұрын
@@Captain_Rhodes sorry, but five of their albums that were released during the 80s were fairly experimental, despite the (deserved) hit aspect of some of the songs... they were smart players first and foremost; although they never quite fitted into any of the 70s movements, they found their ideal home experimenting in the aftermath of punk... like many of their contemporaries, they became part of the establishment and ruled the pop charts, yes, but Eurythmics were in many ways essentially a leftfield duo with the esquisite ear for a catchy melody, placed within a fairly avant-garde setting... adding to it their many b-sides that audibly testify in favour of the experimental side of things... Collaboration with DAF, Can, Green of Scritti Politti and Chris & Cosey do add to the fact Eurythmics were more than just a "pop" band... successful commercially yes - but just as daring and definitely pushing the envelope. Annie's gender bending tactics were definitely subversive and in that, pretty alternative... Most of the collaborators throughout their career (be it musicians or producers) came from the underground music scene.
@Captain_Rhodes
@Captain_Rhodes Жыл бұрын
@@antunivanovic ok well to me they were pop apart from the garden album which was quite indie electronic. They had some on that stuff on later records but it got less and less with be yourself tonight etc. My comment wasnt a criticism. I am a fan. I thought Annie Lennox looked amazing, like a white grace jones. I didnt say pop as a put down, its just how i hear them
@antunivanovic
@antunivanovic Жыл бұрын
@@Captain_Rhodes no worries, I never said you were criticising... I just feel that people take Eurythmics too lightly most of the time, viewing them as a pop act per se... as said, they were commercially successful but they were fairly independent in most of their output (recording, production wise, etc.) which fairly places them in the independent league... show business aside, "Be Yourself Tonight" is one of their albums they recorded (again) independently, away from the commercial studio, on their own... The word "alternative" these days may also seem a bit overblown because people still tend to use that tag in the context of groups like Bauhaus, or say, The Jesus And Mary Chain... What was once "indie", had long become the establishment... And no, "In The Garden" wasn't "quite indie electronic"... it was underlined with synths, yes, but in many ways it is their out-on-out electric album with a cold, quiet feel - and with avant-garde leanings, considering who they worked with on it... Definitely stands out from all of their other discography, I agree... a masterpiece alone in its full glory. But considering how they pushed the envelope and tempered with the establishment of the times, Eurythmics, among many others at that time, WERE essentially "alternative"... their commercial success is only a suitable reward, paying off for all their innovation and all the hard work.
@Captain_Rhodes
@Captain_Rhodes Жыл бұрын
@@antunivanovic I dont take them lightly, well sometimes I do. But i dont put them in the same category as a band like Take That or something who are obviously pop. I take your points. My personal definition of pop includes bands like the cars and blondie who I also have a lot of respect for musically and intellectually. My version of pop isnt boring is what im saying. But yea if someone tried to compare them to a band like Take That (who i dont despise completely) I would be on your side

I met Scott Walker, Billy Bragg, Brian May and Robin Gibb when I was a shop manager in Kensington High St. in the mid 1990's...but the nicest person I ever served was Bob Geldoff. A really really sweet man, very self effacing and down to Earth. I helped him pick out some wrapping paper and he was so grateful. We are all flawed when it comes to the right wrapping paper. Brett Anderson on the other hand was a painful human being to be around....such is the life of the shop assistant.

No, Marvin Gaye is not, nor has he ever been, underrated. Maybe this doesn't mean much to a younger generation, but "What's Going On" was picked as Rolling Stone magazine's best album ever, supplanting, finally, "Sgt. Peppers." Now that was an overrated album.

Jeesus tapdancing Christ. I had no idea that Dave did that film. I wondered who would ever step up to record these guys for posterity. I know that Clapton collaborated with a few, but man. That night with Dave and Junior is fantastic. I've watched that video a hundred times. I didnt know about Junior until Chulahoma, unfortunately. Man, that guy is also a gem. I hope there are still a few people left that enjoy those type of blues as much as I do and refuse to let it disappear. Thank you Dave Stewart and the others that try to share and keep it alive. I think the Sam Chatman video is up to 3.5 million hits now. I have hope.

My favourite music is similar to Dave Stewart! Anything from Lou Reed to Fleet Foxes and then back again to Joni Mitchell! I wish I collected more vinyl! But I don't have enough room to put it in! I love jazz and my favourite is Miles Davis. I particularly, like all the jazz artists and like 60s psychodelia! ask well as all the best music from the 90s! Not so much mainstream stuff, but more edgy music! Peter from Southport

There’s a lot of sentiment that older music is so much better than recent music, and it’s hard to argue against that when you see someone like Dave Stewart displaying his scholarly music history and knowledge, contrasted to some kid who this week arbitrarily wanted to be famous and put some nasally sounding rap-whine over a crappy set of “beats” he downloaded off a dubious website for 99 cents and recorded into his iPhone.

Him, Jeff Lynne & Ian Hunter must've emerged from the same dimly lit northern English cave because I've never seen any of 'em w/out sunglasses. This is not a criticism. Okay, I know Jeff & Ian are from the midlands but still north of southern England. Again no negativity here I dig all things English, cave-like, sunglasses, & music.

Fantastic Choices- I guessed to myself before we saw his choices that he would have great well motivated one's and I was right. The point being that others, including those whose music I prefer, for example Dave Gahan of Depeche Mode one of my favorite bands, and his friend would have terrible choices and poor motivations 'I already have had multiple copies of this before' while arguing that it is the album COVERS that are his motivation not love of the music itself which comes off as shallow and materialistic ('I collect cars because I want one of everything') and superficial- Take Mayham's Jorn and Fenris who have excellent choices as a counter example but whose music I like less! Weird!
