So basically the Lenovo thinkpad p1 is what the MacBook Pro should’ve been, but this one is 100x times better. My dad has been using the Thinkpad since the IBM days, and currently has a Thinkpad x1 carbon, I think I’ve found his new laptop! Great video btw!
@Phiiiiiiiiiiiii5 жыл бұрын
Sadly without MacOS, Thinkpad will never replace a Mac.
@junrenong85765 жыл бұрын
Depends. If you are not content creators that required to use applications on the Mac, eg FCPX then I can’t really justify the reason you using a Mac, as the price is ........... yeah you know what I’m saying. Windows 10 is for me, one of the best OS they ever made, and it’s really great. So if you want a reasonably priced machine, with those high specs in it, go for the thinkpad, except either you are stuck with apple expensive ecosystem or required macOS.

Ong Jun Ren yeah you’re obviously right about that. If your work require MacOS and you for example use Final Cut Pro, then a MacBook is the only option, or a hackintosh, but that defeats the purpose of a laptop, bc to make a hackintosh your only option is a stationary computer, right? I can be wrong. Anyway my point is that if macOS isn’t a must for you, then the thinkpad p1 is a awesome option.

Dave, the advantage of the TrackPoint (vs the TrackPad) is that when you are using the keyboard extensively (nerds, IT professionals, writers, etc are such people), then you do not need to reposition your hand for occasional pointing tasks. You can rest your palms on the palm support, and only move a few fingers to move the TrackPoint. That is the reason for the "unusual" position for the left and right buttons, too. Normally one operates the TrackPoint with their (usually right for the majority of right-handed people) index finger, while the buttons are operated by their thumbs. It is indeed very convenient once one gets used to it. The TrackPad is, however, more ergonomically located for extended mouse positioning scenarios, when one predominantly uses the mouse, and keyboard usage is minimal. Hope it helps. :-)

I think that Thinkpads have better build quality and design over Apple's Macbooks. The design philosophy is quite different, Thinkpads are built for functionality and durability, so naturally they are made to be unassuming.Dave should have talked about the keyboard more, I hav Thinkpads have always had the ctrl and function layout like that for over 20 years. I always thought that the way other laptops placed their function and control keys was weird. The trackpoint is definitely an acquired skill, but it is amazing to use with the upper keys. The precision of the trackpoint is unmatched, I would take that over a good mouse. Lastly, that keyboard is supreme. Better than ANY laptop keyboard, maybe with the exception of one of these mechanical gaming keyboards on a 20 pound desktop replacement.
@andmicbro15 жыл бұрын
The trackpoint works great, and for certain applications it's better than the trackpad. But with a decent dedicated mouse I wouldn't say the trackpoint is better. Maybe back when we used to have ball mice, sure, but modern laser mice? Yeah no contest. Maybe if you're obsessive about never leaving home row (some are, I'm not), then there's an advantage there. But for everyone else the dedicated mouse is better in every way.

My laptops at different companies were always Latitudes (E6400, E6430) and ThinkPads (W530, T430, T450) and I really like them. This one looks very promising as well, it's really hard to share the experience of how that solid chassis feels I agree. The performance of the cooling solution seems really amazing, 65C under load is mindblowing compared to...almost anything else in this category - especially that it doesn't get too loud as well. You can swap the Fn and Ctrl keys in the BIOS for ages, hopefully Lenovo didn't remove this feature from the P1 as well.

@@steveb611 I like it well enough so far. I've been using it exclusively as my work computer since Jan 1 and a little prior to that as a supplement to my previous computer. I do a lot of GIS (mapping, analysis) for work and when I encountered some tasks that required heavy number crunching that was crashing my previous computer, I tried it on the P1 and it handled it without a problem. This is kind of to be expected coming from an older spec machine to a new high spec machine, though. My only complaint so far is that the "standard" screen seems a little blurry to me. My brother recently bought a Yoga and his screen is much sharper, guessing a 4k. I had read that my main mapping software didn't scale very well to 4k so I opted for the standard monitor. As far as I can remember, the only difference between the P1 and the X1 extreme is that you can get the xeon processor and Quadro graphics card on the P1. My main software suggests Quadro cards over the more gamer-centric other offerings.

I'm not sure if many people out there face a similar situation as mines, but I find the tracepoint to be a game changer. I have hyperhidrosis, a medical condition in which the palms of your hands and the bottom of your feet get really sweaty for no reason at all, no matter how calm you are or how ambient the temperature is. So, using the trackpad becomes quite impractical after a while due to the friction with the sweat on your finders/palms and the trackpad, making it a pain to use it to navigate. To put it into perspective, the sensation feels the same as when you scratch a nail against a chalkboard. That's when I switch over to the trackpoint, which has a nice grip to it lets me control the pointer without feeling uncomfortable.

That might actually be my next laptop, or whatever version comes out next as I don't really need to replace my 15 Macbook at the moment. I love the fact that it still has ports!

What about the new Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Extreme with a GTX-1050Ti Max-Q? Good competitor to XPS15!
@ankush-kl2nf5 жыл бұрын
what about the price tag?
@TheRoc355 жыл бұрын
300-400$ approx more expensive than the XPS with same specs, but better built quality. Would be nice to have a review!
@FantasyUnited045 жыл бұрын
It doesn't really compete with the XPS though, more the Precision line (which it does better against considering the precisions massiveprice)

@@TheRoc35 The XPS 15 already has great build quality. (I own one.)

Yeah but the keyboard is garbage compared to Lenovo

Guys, it's already on the market- it's out on Lenovo's site and on online retailers. But I'm so so confused as to why Dave says that other laptops with gaming GPU's (like, let's say a GTX 1070) will crush the Quadro GPU for 3D work -a Quadro GPU is built for 3D -thus its way more stable. I asked Dave what he meant by that, maybe he knows something I don't -waiting to see what he says!

EVERY GTX has opengl. Its only they dont perform that well, maybe because driver restrictions.

fun fact you can invert the fn ctrl layout with software
@tahasever5 жыл бұрын
Hi Dave @2:30 you are right about "FN" and "ctrl" keys positions. But older models that I used from ThinkPad, you can swap this two button functions from bios. So FN works as ctrl, and ctrl works as fn. 😉

White Mail Privilege I’m 20 and majority of people in my college prefer track points since when you have to use mouse you don’t have too lift your hands off the keyboard which is nice while you are programming. Also, haha 69, haha so mature, haha can’t stop laughing.
