It's not just all of the track, but it's all of the track at the absolute limit of the car. Not artificially using all of the track where you drive out just because you know you're supposed to use it all.

I had to read what you said twice, and I understood it the second time. Very good point. As I once heard someone say, "Don't track-out just because you think you have to. Track-out because the speed of the car carries you out there." In other words, if the car isn't taking you to the track limits, you're going to slow. Easier said than done. I've been doing it for 25 years and I'm still trying to find time. :) It's a journey for some people.

I was about to say something similar. Suelio Almeida said this thing in one of his recent shorts. Big difference between widening the track artificially and pushing the car to the limit that forces it to use the track.

@@AdamB5000 yeah i once actualy made a video from gran turismo 7 and i will be very honest my inputs for brake and throtle were identical to what world record did but for some reason his car had way more grip than me. also steeering kinda matched too so i really dont understand how some people gaining so much grip while at it i really dont. i am only like a second away from it but damn its impossible to have that much grip in the corners.

I have only recently started sim racing at the age of 68 and had hit a wall on lap times that I couldn’t get through. A 70 year old friend who I met , so to speak through ACC who is in NZ and I’m in England by the way told me about this video which at first I was struggling to find , and just by him relating to me this method of driving over messenger gave me exactly what I needed to know to break through that wall and get faster . I was practicing driving at brands Hatch and just by being told what you show in this video I became faster . I have just watched this video and it’s a real revelation. I would recommend anyone trying to improve their lap times at any track to employ the method you show so well. Thanks you sir for in particular this video and I have subscribed and am looking forward to learning more from your other videos. My friend who I have never met from NZ has helped me immeasurably to enjoy and succeed in this sim racing malarkey and now I also have you to thank sir. Thanks and my very best wishes Brian.

Amazing side by side comparison that actually shows what it means when people say "use all the track", and I also really appreciated the advice to sacrifice one corner to gain speed in the next corner in certain situations. Amazing video Dave. Impeccable timing as I am literally just preparing to race GT4's at Spa this week. Despite the fact that I am aware of "using the whole track", often there's a lot more to use than what I realize or feel comfortable using. However, this way of finding speed seems to be one of the "easiest" to master for us non-aliens, so it's definitely one I will be focusing on a ton in practice. Thank you so much.

Great advice, for sure. I would just add that using all the track is sometimes tricky, for example the use of kerbs is very track and game dependant and the best way to find out the ideal racing line is to watch and study hot laps from good drivers.

I can relate SO MUCH to this video. When I learn a new track, I only start doing decent times after I realise I have to be more aggressive on using the whole track near the apex. But after watching this video, I realise that I consistenly fail to also use the whole track on corner entry. I do use all the tarmac, but crucially, not the curb. This should've been obvious to me, as I have a very vivid image from Driver61's Scott saying "use all the track"... so this video has been a bit of an eye opener. Thanks a lot Dave. Beer on me if I manage to shave 2.5 seconds off any track!

Great video as always, Dave. I feel like you've mentioned it before but this helped me remember to explore track limits when learning a new track as well. Some tracks let you go quite a bit outside of where you'd expect the limits to end... until they don't lol. Red Bull Ring is a good example of that. Need to be more conscious of that when practicing as it's easy to forget.

Great side by sides here showing what the more serious sims allow and what it does. My first and really major sim racing I did was back with GT6, then later with FM7; the track limits with those titles are highly conservative in comparison to say ACC. Which I have to re-train my driving to take more liberty of curbing, which as you showed, makes a massive difference. Granted, not all tracks are this forgiving I'm sure, but none the less, seeing those lap times come down is so enlightening.

It’s possibly my bad legs, possibly the Logitech pedals, or maybe the knob operating them. I was just using "all the track" on exits by letting the car get thrown wide from the max power it could handle and that's only half the equation. Totally get it now. I'm basically needing to widening up the corner at the beginning as well to maximize the speed all the way thru. F1 22 is finicky about track limits but I'll figure it out. hehe
