This is another video in my series “New Forest Walks” accompanied by my Whippet (Logan). In this episode I take a 4 mile circular route from Ocknell Pond, which is situated to the West of Stoney Cross - just North of the A31.
Ocknell Pond, which has a legend attached to it (!), is bone dry during the height of the Summer and is positioned on the edge of what was once an RAF airfield in WW2. To see my previous video on RAF Stoney see the link below.
My route takes me South across Ocknell Plain to the small plantation of Winding Stonard. I head underneath the A31, via an underpass (which also serves as a Pony Pound) to enjoy the views across to Puckpitts Inclosure.
I head back through the underpass & head West to explore “The Spreading Oak” -one of the celebrity trees of the New Forest. After passing some New Forest Ponies & their foals, I pass through the Slufters Inclosure & over the Bratley Water stream and then head South again to investigate another, fairly large, Pony Pound.
I finish off by heading back to my starting point by walking back North through the Slufters Inclosure.

Thanks Dave. Beautiful walk in beautiful weather. The sun always shines on the righteous! You deserved some "light" refreshment after that.

I just love all the gorgeous trees you film, Dave. Magnificent! We have had 3 very hard frosts here this spring (2023 Pennsylvania) and it was very destructive to the oaks locally. They're struggling to put out a new growth spurt, as the frosts killed all of the initial spring leaves. It's so sad to go around town and see the shriveled ones with just bare branches instead, and only tiny bits of green trying to emerge. I imagine it's going to hurt the acorn harvest so there will be a greater need to help out our squirrel population later this year.

Thank you Diane. Sad to learn of the problems that Oaks are having around your way.

Good to see you noting the influence removing trees has on the natural water system Dave. Few would realise how one change leads to another.

Looking at the weather today (Storm Alex is passing over the UK), the "anti erosion" measures will certainly get tested!

Another great video. I hope there will be many more. I Live 90 miles away but have done over 40 walks in the New Forest over the last three years. Some of the more obscure paths are not the easiest to follow but that’s all part of the fun and it’s wonderful how you can walk for miles and have the place to yourself. It’s a beautiful part of the country.

Thanks Jade. Yes... plenty more "New Forest Walk" series to come. This was the 46th video in this series & there are at least 9 more scheduled to come out (one a fortnight, alternating with the other "Walks in Hampshire" series).

Thanks for a lovely walk. Some beautiful ponies and that river. I'm always in awe of your knowledge of the various streams in the Forest. You know the name, where it flows to, what it joins and where it enters the sea.. There is something magical about finding the source of a river

Thanks Lionel. Yes, I love finding the source of rivers. Only yesterday, I was out exploring the source of the river Itchen (a spring just South of Cheriton, Hampshire).

@@DaveFord We stopped at Cheriton on the way back from Hinton Ampner a couple of weeks ago. There’s an awful lot of water at that point, considering it’s no far from the source.

I’ve taken many photos of that tree right at the end when it was standing , was a bit saddened when one day some years back I came along and saw it was down. Oh well , these fallen trees still make for some good photos. Excellent video once again , BTW I’ve lost count the amount of times people have asked me out here where exactly Ocknell Pond is lol

Lovely tale about the Ocknell pond's connection with the death of William II Dave. However, there may be more truth in the legend than at first appears. As I understand it the bottom of the pond was irrevocably damaged as part of construction work during WWII which led to it drying out much more frequently in summer than hitherto so just maybe it could have turned red in August. Then again that just might be down to the iron content. Still why spoil a good story! Best John

Really enjoyed this one, you were lucky with the underpass! no ankle deep cow and horse poo. Not been around this part of the forest so I think its going to have to be one for the list. You said the A31 was built in the sixties? was that the original road? I remember when I moved to Southampton in the seventies there were a lot of road works all along from Ringwood to what is now the M271. Look forward to more of your adventures soon.
@DaveFord

Ah yes...sorry for the confusion about the A31. The road has been there for many , many years -a 1961 map shows it as a single lane A road & indeed it shows on much older maps . It has been one of the main routes through the Forest for centuries. However it was only upgraded to a dual carriageway, through the New Forest, in the 1960's. What I should have said was "...what she (the Spreading Oak") felt about having the A31 upgraded to a dual carriageway alongside her in the 1960's..etc.". rather than "having the A31 built alongside her". The old tree seems to be coping with the noise though!
