Archiv has released a big box containing its complete recordings featuring Reinhard Goebel and Music Antiqua Köln. It's a very distinguished discography, on the whole, especially for its performances of Biber, Telemann, and other rarely heard German baroque masters, and if you enjoy baroque music on period instruments this will be a set that's hard to beat (even if Goebel says some very silly things in the booklet interview).

Just a quirky quirk: I like it better when you hold up the individual cd’s when they are original covers - with that being said, your vid’s are the absolute most entertaining, interesting and educational on KZfaq - thank you for them!

Many thanks for this exhaustive--and exhausting--tour through the Goebel box. This is one of those rare instances when I have to say, "There is too much music here." I could never process it all. On the other hand, since I already have earlier reissues of Goebel's Bach instrumental music, his Telemann, and his absolutely unmissable Biber collection (supplemented in the reissue by some McCreesh recordings of other Biber sacred music), I will give this one a pass. I've always liked Goebel's approach to Baroque music. He thinks outside of the box, and though the sounds emanating from his period band don't always please the ear, he gets to the heart of the music more often than not. I remember when I first heard his unbelievably fast rendition of Brandenburg 6 first movement. I laughed out loud. But then, later, came to see the point of the quicksilver approach; other versions with more moderate tempos seem to drone on relentlessly, whereas Goebel makes the music take flight. And thanks, as always, Dave, for commending the music of Bibler. A giant of the Baroque period, and still underappreciated.

Their Art of the Fugue is one of my favorite renditions. It can be found here on KZfaq. The performance is filmed in a rather bleak modernist building.

I have been listening to some of the recordings, what a remarkable achievement. A whole epoch of great music committed to posterity very expertly. Seems to me much more valuable than the 803rd recording of Schubert's Unfinished Symphony.

It was my favourite growing up,i didn't like the gallant and classical style too much due to the light bright melodies,i discovered the early baroque with It and It became my favourite go-to when i wanna listen some.I began to appreciate the lightness of gallant after 20s but most of the time i go with cold early music haha

Yeah, I remember when that 2-disc Heinichen box came out, plugged as another clump of "Brandenburg [like] concertos." I gobbled up my copy from the BMG record club as soon as it hit their exploitative monthly flier. For what it's worth [not much to anybody who doesn't also happen to be me], I personally love how Goebel handled Bach's accompanied violin sonatas, Goebel himself on violin, of course-perhaps my favorite interpretation of those works. Yes, brisk, but so precise and exciting. I learned something: I didn't know Musica Antiqua Köln tried their hand at Corrette. Corrette seemed more interested in selling volumes of his music than in crafting anything of lasting merit. He published method books for more instruments than any one person could reasonably be expected to play with any degree of proficiency. Corrette seems to command exactly as much of the modern musical psyche as he should.

Oh wow, I admit that I had forgotten Goebel and his band, but back in my baroque and HIP phase they did have a strong magnetism.

Listening to this now. The Bach is just superb - and mostly not noticeably fast to me at least. It is different - very refined tone…really interesting. Looking forward to Biber.

Gobble (Goebel as autocorrected) saying silly things is what I expect of German conductors (especially if beer drinking is involved). Love Music Antiqua Köln's "beerhall" folksy sound. Looking forward to your possible Rosary Sonatas video because there are sooo many recordings and many of them are too close to the score or not far away enough and depend greatly on the violinist's sense of taste and invention. Thanks for your prolific video production, hope you feel better soon!

I suppose it had to happen sooner or later… That I am in the first viewer of this video, only 27 seconds after it was posted! Goebel and MAK were held in incredibly high esteem in the 70s and 80s. I have the Arkiv LP box of the Telemann Tafelmusik which is a pleasant way to spend some time in baroque-land (I imagine the CDs would make pleasant driving music).

Like Norrington, these disc should probably be restricted to music schools as awful examples of what happens when doctrinaire coductors get their hands on an innocent orchestra. Any other suggestions? If I may quote Flanders and Swann, "I never did care for music much, just Hi-Fidelity". PS I enjoyed your Sullivan appraisal. I fully agree with your conclusion. A pity that Victorians were so Victorian, and that it led to a theory that "serious" English art song or opera should never mirror natural English patterns of speech. The French were lucky in Massenet, the Italians lucky passim, and the English had Britten ... Who do you think best set American lyrics to reflect American speech in serious song and opera?

the British always sucked at music, only when germans and italians moved there that they started doing some interesting stuff.Outside of italy,Germany, austria there are few interesting things in the renaissance-baroque period from England the exception being lute music.

in the usa unfortunately there isn't any example, america was colonized by kicked boring puritans after the monarchy returned to Power in great britain, one of the puritan beliefs is that all music is demonic this is why America didn't enjoy a good period in the baroque-classical era

Well, you certainly don't have to like it. But don't forget that when MAK and the other big HIP performers started off in the 1970s there were plenty of doctrinal conductors that made the world believe you have to play Bach or Handel the same way and with the same orchestra like Mahler and Bruckner and Wagner. Slow, huge and dull sounding, vibrato everywhere. I had all that, been there, thank you... As I said, you don't have to agree with every interpretation and I also certainly don't, but all these guys blew 150 years of dust off of old music and for me they really opened eyes and showed me that this music can really rock, literally. So no, I disagree. This is not just a bad example for music school, this is to enjoy this type of interpretation.

At last someone who confirms my idea that the texts of Bachs' cantatas and passions are worthless. Strange that educated people at that time couldn't see that.

@WhatsApp±177𝟶𝟽𝟹77𝟷𝟷0 In fact this counts for the texts of almost all opera's and cantatas. It's hilarious how f.i. Mozarts' opera's are analysed as profound psychological studies. M just received a stupid text by Da Ponte and wrote notes on it that was all. Remarkable that art forms age in totally different ways. Music and painting from 200 years ago is still relevant but literature...no. I attempted to read Voltaire and quit after 20 pages. Tedious, insipid, pretentious.
