So in the last two years ive been obsessed with your videos and ive learned a ton. Got myself my basic setup tools and learned on my own guitars and helping friends. Today I made my first official setup as a Guitar Tech on a local shop. Im very grateful for all the knowledge youve shared with me and all the money youve saved me.

Thanx for another great vid, Dave. Extra apt for me as I have an RG myself. The tuners on mine are fine but when locked at the nut "the high e" still goes out of tune within seconds. Dunno whether that's common or not? Bottomer. Anyhoo, important stuff: Glad to see you're back to your best in learning us "minnions" :) about cool guitar luthierings and stuff. Oh, I've had eye problems recently and it taught me to prioritize. Health is more important than all the other crap we care about.

I have 2 of those Korean RG 220b's from the 90's, a silver one and a black one. Mine have the whammy that you just feed the string through, no little piece of lead to lose and no trimming the little brass endpiece off. It's the best whammy system I have seen. The springs eventually get weak on whammies. So buy some extra springs, but keep the tired springs, like they are 1/2 of a spring now. Also don't be afraid to move the springs around like more on the low end so the bridge floats evenly

Dave with Ibanez trems there is sometimes a small grub screw inside the trem post (1.5mm key I think) if the posts don't go down it could be because of them. It would be worth checking they are backed out (if the posts have them...) before trying to lower the posts.

I have an '92 RG750 with a FloydRose tremlo that I had since I was a kid. Thinking back it was never right from the start. Action too high out of intonation warped neck and eventually frets worn from me playing it a lot. About 20 years later I took it out of storage and had it worked on by one of the best Luthiors on Long Island. He really pulled a rabbit out of his hat it's better than it ever was. Sounds great real easy to play compared to before it's like a new guitar. Wife upset because I'm up many nights playing it. I can hardly put it down.

Thats an ibanez edge trem ,It's really hard to tell in the video .but an Ibanez edge trem don't go parallel with the body like a Floyd rose cause of the sloped design . It does have a parallel mark/line on the low E side of trem to use as a reference .
@SkyAvila983
@SkyAvila983 5 жыл бұрын
@@DavesWorldofFunStuff The line he is talking about is the knife edge visible from the side - if its straight the tremolo is set up the right way and you get the right string height. Thanks for the video Dave, always learning something from you!

That's an Edge Pro trem, and yes... that model of the Edge goes parallel to the body. The original Edge and LoPro Edge trems have the mark/line you're referring to (actually the knife edge for the trem) that should be parallel to the body.

Friends, before adjusting the bridge posts on an Ibanez made after 1992, always check INSIDE the bridge post. They placed a little tiny locking screw inside, that you have to loosen with a smaller allen key, before turning the larger main post with the larger allen key. I assume Dave checked before turning the post for all it was worth and it didn't have one - for sure you'd have heard him complain for 5 minutes about it if it was there. Oh and there are higher-tension springs you can get if the 3 aren't cutting it for you. Not recommended to put in 4, because then you can't use the retainer bar, and then a spring could pop out on a pull-up. Cheers!

All those floating bridges are easy to set up....block the trem off so it's in the right position (a floyd will lay flat with the body and most ibanez have a bass plate that you can see on the bass side of the trem and should be parallel with the body.....) once the block is in undo the locking nuts and tune the guitar then lock the nuts and remove the block then tune by adjusting the screws on the claw....just a slight turn on each making sure the claw is not at an angle once tuned.....then use the fine tuners.....simple. ....string tension=spring tension.....think of it as a set of scales ....equal tension on each side......

I have a ibanez rg rebuild thats my main guitar with fixed bridge. The tuning stability is great considering, but it seems like my low e is going flat way more often than I would like and sharp after sitting overnight sometimes. I still have not recorded the relief from one day to the next, which I plan on doing. The question is disregarding neckpocket, crappy truss rod, and headstock should I maybe just try more expensive strings? Im using the most mass produced cheapest brand, and wondering if I need to shop using them. They start with an E.

I found an RG370 (moon shadow finish) used for $139 at Guitar Center a few years and snatched it up as an impulse buy, as I was taken by it's good sparkly looks. However, after cleaning it and setting it up (I've got a lot of experience with Ibanez Edge, TRS, Lo TRS II, ILT1 trem), I could not get a decent feel from the trem. It would stay in tune, but IIRC, it required brute force to push down on the bar, and the bar felt like it would snap. (I think it's 6mm in diameter.) When I removed a spring, and went down to two springs, the feel improved but tuning stabilty decreased. I tried a brand new set of Fender tremolo springs, and even mixed and matched, but this trem felt unlike any other. Big disappointment. I thought about keeping it with the bridge blocked, but I am a whammy guy all the way, so I sold it.

I have learned that with locking nuts it's best to tune the b and e string a little sharp and the A and E string a little flat before locking them down. When they lcck it equals out.
@relzric
@relzric 5 жыл бұрын
@Mike G Yeah, but unless the string retainer is set all the way down, and sometimes even if it is, you have to adjust right after locking. Then you are not sitting at the halfway mark and after about a month you will run out of turn room. If its set up right you should be able to get the guitar in drop D. with just the fine tuners.
@r3d5ive87
@r3d5ive87 5 жыл бұрын
I set up the micro tuners at bridge to their midway point then tune to concert pitch and lock the strings at nut. Then make micro adjustments and you’re all set. Starting at their midpoint gives you a ton of flexibility to go sharp or flat.

0:40 - What do you mean by "those guitars were never meant for those strings"? I recently tranformed a Yamaha RGX 312 (which has Yamaha's kind of FR trem system) into a B-tuned baritone guitar with a set of D'Addario XL120-7 (7 strings, leaving the high E string out), so from B to B the string gauges are 011-054. I had to remove the middle spring because the bridge was sinking into its hole, even with those strings! :p
@ZeeKat
@ZeeKat 4 жыл бұрын
Seems kinda light - I do baritone tuning on a regular scale as well and ended up with 13-56 so it doesn't feel completely limp (it feels like 10-46 on normal tuning now for me). Yeah there obviously was some FR readjusting required but stays ok with three springs.
@Module79L
@Module79L 4 жыл бұрын
@@ZeeKat - Not really, they don't feel limp at all. Tension-wise the set feels exactly the same way as it feels on a 7-string or on a 6-string tuned to E. Compared with my previous tuning (C# with 012's) I tell you, these feel tight AF! My fingertips had to re-learn to deal with tighter strings again. :D
@ZeeKat
@ZeeKat 4 жыл бұрын
@@Module79L and I thought I'm on a lighter side - last time I was grabbing a pack of 13s dudes in the store advised a set of 13-60s. Not to mention the djent people which regularly use some real baritone cabling (14-68?).
@Module79L
@Module79L 4 жыл бұрын
@@ZeeKat - Yeah but they're going about it the wrong way: they're using strings that are designed to achieve the optimal tension at a certain tuning but they tuned them way lower. That way the strings will always feel limp, hence why they buy heavier gauges. However the problem will remain: even a 060 E string will always feel floppy if tuned to B or A or lower. The best solution is to do what I did: buy a set where the strings you're going to use are designed to be tuned to a note closer to the one you're going to tune to, so even if you tune them down 1 step or 1 1/2 steps they won't lose too much tension. The set I use can go to drop A or A standard without any problems (except for the intonation on the 6th string but that's a saddle's limitation) but if I had a 7-string and wanted to tune it to, let's say G or F, I'd buy a light 8-string set, ditch the high E string and tune the strings up or down 1/2 step. : )

I’ve owned 2 Ibanez RG guitars in my life. Both were made in Japan, Prestige models. The Edge tremolo system is garbage. Neither one would stay in tune. The first guitar had a mahogany body with maple neck and two pickups. The high E string was hanging off the neck because the neck pocket was crooked. It had been shimmed from the factory and it was still crap. The second guitar had a single humbucker on it. I blocked the trem to keep it from moving to solve the tuning problems. While the construction and playability were ok, the guitar had a basswood body. Basswood is a cheap and terrible sounding wood. I never could get good tones out of that guitar. I owned a Mesa 50 watt single rectifier at the time so I had a good amp. It wasn’t the amp. Ibanez is a lot like Gibson in my experience. Quality control is hit or miss. They make excellent guitars for their artist, but the average consumer never knows what they’re going to get. Ibanez is a budget guitar brand masquerading as premium. Their guitars are overpriced and they under perform.

The original Edge tremolo is recognized as one of the best tremolos ever made....some people even think its better than an Original Floyd Rose. All my guitars have Floyd's or Edge tremolos....they work fine for me, just have to know how to set them up properly. Guitars with floating trems can be a pain in the ass though...especially the initial setup.

Instead of the Floyd intonation tool, you can use the Ibanez one (EJK1000). www.killerburstguitars.com/product-page/ibanez-ejk1000-intonation-tool

Those RG and Jem Jr in the cheap category are terrible in a lot of cases, Ibanez doesn't really have good guitars until you hit the $800+ Coretek(Indonesian) made guitars, I have seen so many twisted necks and a problem with Truss Rods where you end up with an S shape slightly below the locking nut that causes fret buzz when there should be none on a supposed straight neck. Floyd Rose aren't that bad, they just require a little bit of extra work on the setup, but the system is made to use 9's not 10's, I mean you can do it but I don't recommend it, shredder guitar but making it harder on yourself for no reason. Get an Allparts Tremolo-no it will save you time and makes it less a pain in the ass to setup.

Edge tremolo is better than floyd rose in my opinion not as noisy smoother less play no knocking when used
