David Baltimore outlines the sequence of events that led to the Nobel Prize-winning discovery of reverse transcriptase, an enzyme that converts a sequence in an RNA molecule into a sequence in a DNA molecule.
Talk Overview:
The first video is a shortened version in which Dr. David Baltimore introduces the different types of viruses, and defines how viruses are classified depending on their genetic material. Using HIV as an example, Baltimore explains what constitutes an equilibrium versus a non-equilibrium virus, and shows how the discovery of the reverse transcriptase helped scientist understand viruses.
The second video is an extended edition in which Baltimore also outlines the sequence of events that led to the Nobel Prize-winning discovery of reverse transcriptase, an enzyme that converts a sequence in an RNA molecule into a sequence in a DNA molecule. As Baltimore explains, the discovery of reverse transcriptase has revolutionized modern molecular biology, and it has aided in the understanding of viruses like HIV, and the genetic basis of cancer.
Speaker Biography:
After serving as President of the California Institute of Technology for nine years, in 2006 David Baltimore was appointed President Emeritus and the Robert Andrews Millikan Professor of Biology. Born in New York City, he received his B.A. in Chemistry from Swarthmore College in 1960 and a Ph.D. in 1964 from Rockefeller University, where he returned to serve as President from 1990-91 and faculty member until 1994.
For almost 30 years, Baltimore was a faculty member at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. While his early work was on poliovirus, in 1970 he identified the enzyme reverse transcriptase in tumor virus particles, thus providing strong evidence for a process of RNA to DNA conversion, the existence of which had been hypothesized some years earlier. Baltimore and Howard Temin (with Renato Dulbecco, for related research) shared the 1975 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for their discovery, which provided the key to understanding the life-cycle of HIV. In the following years, he has contributed widely to the understanding of cancer, AIDS and the molecular basis of the immune response.
In addition to receiving the Nobel Prize, Baltimore's numerous honors include the 1999 National Medal of Science, election to the National Academy of Sciences in 1974, the Royal Society of London, and the French Academy of Sciences. Learn more about Baltimore’s research at his lab website:

Wow learning about this from Baltimore himself is amazing!! His team that worked on the RT discovery was so lucky. It’s crazy living next to CalTech I often don’t think about how many amazing discoveries and breakthroughs are made a few miles away. Thank you for this video!

Absolutely superb overview of virology in less than 20 minutes by one of the world's leading experts on viruses, David Baltimore. He was not only a professor at CalTech, but for many years distinguished himself as President of Caltech. This is a must see video that covers many topics in virology in less than 20 minutes.

I don't think I have ever seen a biology lecture with so little actual evidence of any of the claims being made. Like completely devoid of any experimental examples of the mechanisms described, or even a casual reference to proof of any kind. Remarkable. The way we detect viruses is with a technique that hasn't been improved upon in decades because it's fine.

I remember being fascinated by the lectures received during my training as a nurse 57 years ago. How wonderfully we are made, by design. We are the same design, but unique as an individual. Our DNA like a fingerprint shows how that is so. Interference by ” alien transplant " prevents the natural order of things.

It's great to see a lecture given by a famous scientist. His fascination with RNA World is shared by me. I think the full importance of RNA in cellular metabolism has not been elucidated and that DNA will come to be regarded as a form of RNA. I believe that RNA forms an invisible web within cells, the mysterious essence of life proposed by Pasteur.

Viruses "invade" a cell by melding with the lipid bi-layer; The replication which proceeds often results in slight mutation of sequence of ATCG which then are released when cell ruptures due to take over its molecular machinery causing it to make new replications; When some variant has an effect on macro host dynamics such a mutation can increase in a studied population

Is the novel COVID-19 a equilibrium virus (it is serious on patients that have chronic degenerative diseases, the eldery or are inmunodepressed) or is it a non equilibrium virus (it jumped from other spicies and is a SARS related virus). I know It may sound obvious but i want to confirm to wich category it belongs.
@voidisyinyangvoidisyinyang885
@voidisyinyangvoidisyinyang885 4 жыл бұрын
it must be non-equilibrium like bird virus - Corona is from Bats - and so it doesn't care about killing its new host - humans. It's not adapted to not kill us.
