All 29 (yes 29!) David Bowie studio albums (1967 - 2016) ranked from worst to best in my opinion. I have included both the Tin Machine albums and Labyrinth (which feels like a Bowie album to me even if 50% of the music is by Trevor Jones).
The albums are (in chronological order):
David Bowie, Space Oddity, The Man Who Sold The World, Hunky Dory, The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars, Aladdin Sane, Pin Ups, Diamond Dogs, Young Americans, Station To Station, Low, "Heroes", Lodger, Scary Monsters (and Super-Creeps), Let's Dance, Tonight, Labyrinth, Never Let Me Down, Tin Machine, Tin Machine II, Black Tie, White Noise, The Buddha of Suburbia, Outside, Earthling, Hours, Heathen, Reality, The Next Day, Black Star.
I hope you enjoy the video...

I thought Tin Machine II was much better than Tin Machine I. But both were a relief after the nadir of Tonight and Never Let Me Down. While I didn't think the first Tim Machine album was much in the way of a return to form, I did think the second one would have been a worthy successor to Scary Monsters. That was back when I found Let’s Dance was a terrible let down (at the age of 20). Nowadays, after a major change of heart, I think Let’s Dance belongs as the last release of the Great Bowie era. The next release that excited me was Outside.

Man who sold the world . The quality of the band is epic . Not a weak song on the album , the King Crimson influence make this album unique in Bowie Discography. this album is underrated . should be between 3 and 5

Love your opinions on these records. So cool to see all the different physical versions of these albums. My favorite of his has to be “Station to Station”, you said it best yourself, it’s just so slick, straight bangers from front back. Every track has so many standout ideas that are executed with a level of detailed musicianship and crisp production that really takes this album to the next level for me. Subbed by the way.

Fun fact: the cover of Low is a play on the phrase "low profile", as Bowie was keeping his head down in Berlin at the time. Thumbs up for including Labyrinth, but thumbs down for putting it ahead of Buddha of Suburbia, (which Bowie considered to be one of his greatest achievements). I thought Earthling would be higher too, but no qualms on your top three.

Yes, this is a very good ranking-Bowie effort, full of interesting opinions. What I struggle with is integrating a 1984-2017 list with a 1970-1983 list. I will have to give it a try. There's so much baggage that comes with the albums up to Scary Monsters, after which the teenager-in-captivity years were over. The rest of his oeuvre overlaps with me to wildly varying degrees.

I'm a 65-year-old Bowie fan. I have 54 Bowie CDs, and obviously all of his studio albums. I'm paused at 6:24 to make a comment. Everybody kicks 'Never Let Me Down'. Now it was the first CD (by anyone) I ever bought, and so I'm a bit of a foster parent reflecting on a troublesome but beloved charge who has gone on to better things. This album, if you just put it on and listen to it (and forget you've heard Ziggy Stardust and Hunky Dory) is fine. The title track is really good, Time Will Crawl is good, Zeroes is good, Shining Star is good, so are 87 and Cry and Too Dizzy; Bang Bang has got to be better than some of the songs that have reached number one in the UK charts over the years. Put it on in the car when your friend wants to talk a bit and let it run in the background. Just as time vindicated Fidel Castro, so time (waiting in the wings) will come to accept and almost love this album that has been kicked, spat on and generally abused because it is fashionable to do so. Bowie's own favourite (of his studio albums) is The Buddha of Suburbia, and you have kicked that in the teeth very early on. Never Let me Down is not that bad. You grading guys are cruel, day-in, day-out to this album, and someone has to speak out against this cruelty.

@joelgraham3 3 ай бұрын
I have to say that you did a good job - I began my Bowie life with the release of Ziggy - my age group will defend those records all day long - but you threaded that needle nicely. It's subjective after all. The best versions of the first Bowie album are found on "Images" - it's all there - I would caution listeners not to get involved with remasters and other versions of that double record. Aladdin Sane was a you-had-to-be-there record so it needed to find its way to that top 5 somehow as far as we're concerned. Keep in mind, we only knew Bowie as the person on that album cover - the future didn't exist - so we loved it unconditionally along with Pinups - we were now clued in on the end of Ziggy for the release of Pinups but we were in denial and much relieved to see that cover and hear Bowie and Spiders tighter than ever despite the fact that Woodmansey already had his walking papers and had been replaced by crack drummer Aynsley Dunbar. By the way, back to Aladdin - it did get panned for having a sloppy production but imagine hearing that record starting with the song Aladdin Sane - removing Watch that Man altogether - imagine it - got it? Now where is it on your list? lol. We saw David Live as a legitimate record - not a live per-se and some would put that on a list. (Not me). If you like Occasional Dream then you'll like a song that never made it: Conversation Piece and a alternative version of Candidate could have been reworked and put on Diamond Dogs - it's very good. I think Garson would like your list.
@alansteadreviews
@alansteadreviews 3 ай бұрын
The only thing I noticed as a potential negative on the double album remaster of the first album was noticing potentially a touch too much compression on 'Did you ever have a Dream?' although I don't notice it now. I noticed it when I first started listening to that version after hearing the 90s Deram anthology CD version. And you're right about 'Conversation Piece' and 'Candidate'. I have them as bonus tracks on Space Oddity and Diamond Dogs and they are both great! I'll be covering them in my one of my non album tracks videos. As for the rest I will go into each album in more detail in future videos which will be fun. Cheers for watching and for your thoughts. 👍

Excellent work, Alan. For me, and I know I'm not original here, Bowie is the greatest artist in rock history. He is an absolute icon of 20th century popular culture, but what makes him gigantic is his music, the overwhelming power of his work. Just commenting that, in my opinion, Earthling deserves to be closer to the top 10, for me it is, in fact. And Blackstar is a clear top 5. It will continue to grow over the years. And a little more. As other friends have commented, I share the idea that Tin Machine's first album is often terribly underrated. And it is a stage in his career that seems crucial to me. Embark on that adventure. In addition to talent, our star had good balls. Greetings

@@alansteadreviews I first saw the full colour album cover in a book by Roy Carr in 1980 called Bowie illustrated record, a very good book and best seller in it's day and he asked the question would you have preferred this? I think bowie had the cover changed to black and white like the thin white duke tour of that year as the clothes he wore and the stage show was black and white. He had a very heavy cocaine habit at that time.

Excellent video sir 🎉 i have Lodger ranked much higher because i really love it & also kinda feel bad that it's part of a (slightly arbitrary) trilogy & Low and Heroes get all the enthusiasm.. i love HD, AS, DD, StS, MWSTW & SMSC so so much.. love Pin-ups too.. and of course i love ZS&TSFM but but but i personally feel it's just slightly.. SLIGHTLY overrated.. anyways cheers 😊

You are seeing a lot of people saying Mr Bowie knew he was on his way out before the Blackstar was released and I must of seen it 15-20 times in the last month people reporting he did not know he was going to pass on until after he recorded Blackstar. Either way it's a good album and his last. I know I have to listen to an album dozens upon dozens before I can say I like it or not. For example I hated and hated Scary Monsters album. Thought it was weird noises and just linear lyrics and one day I put it in and was in a different mood and each and every song hit me like a truck and knocked me into a different stage mentally and now it's like in my top three. Good list. Thank you for the review. I love to see what others liked and dislike about an album. It's so diverse, one person will hate an album and another can love it.

Hi Alan!👋 David Bowie is my favourite artist too! My ranking was done 1 year ago and it took me 2 months(dont have much free time).. I listened 3 times every album and on the third round I rated each track from 1 to 10 and then got the average.Easy! Labyrinth not included. Therefore, I gave 6 if I liked the song; 7 quite liked it; 8 much; 9 very much; 10 ?.. In the event of having two albums with thw same points I will go for the one with more tracks, and if it is not enough, I will go for the album with more 10s, 9s and so on... I could be wrong but I rated 303 songs...7 of them got 10 points; 29 got 9 and 3 got 5 (lowest). My ears are pleased easily and there are many 7 and 8.... In any case something to consider is that what I most like is Melodic Hardrock and symphony metal... Anyway, this is my ranking: Into brackets yours. 28. Deram Anthology 6,6 (13) 27. Buddah suburbia 6,7 (28) 26. Tin Machine II. 6,9 (29) 25. Space Oddity. 7 (7) 24. Black tie 7,1 (26) 23. Outside 7,1 (16) 22. Heroes 7,2 (4) 21. Lodger 7,2 (18) 20. Tin Machine 7,2 (25) 19. Earthling 7,3 (20) 18. Reality 7,3 (23) 17.Tonight 7,4 (21) 16. Hours 7,4 (22) 15. Pin ups 7,4 (17) 14. Station 7,5 (6) 13. The man who 7,5 (11) 12. Never let me 7,5 (27) 11. Heathen 7,5 (14) 10. Scary monster 7,6 (10) 9. The next day 7,6 (9) 8. Blackstar 7,7 (8) 7. Young Americans 7,7 (19) 6. Honky Dory 7,7 (2) 5. Lets dance 7,8 (15) 4. Low 7,8 (3) 3. Diamond dogs 8 (5) 2. Aladdin sane 8,1 (12) 1. ZIGGY STARDUST 8,5 (1) So, I may say that we have some same places + -...(12 ?) Thanks for reading.. ..and greetings from Spain...😊👍

That's really great to see your rankings / how you got there... I used a similar tactic scoring each song out of 5 and then working out the percentage so giving me a score out of 10 for the album. Seems a bit strange I know but I score songs out of 5 and albums out of 10. I just find it easier for my mind to process it that way for some reason... I allowed myself the use of 0.5s as 1 - 10 didn't seem enough but decided not to go down the rabbit hole of every decimal point otherwise it would have taken me ages to decide... Hope you enjoy my next ones. I won't reveal anything yet, but there will be a big variety including some metal / obscure music that is part metal at points...

50 minutes after my first comment I'm back. Lots of positives this time, not the least is because Ziggy Stardust is my favourite album of all time. I was worried upon seeing "Heroes" in your number four spot that Low would be your number one (nothing wrong with Low of course). However, Ziggy made it to its rightful place, at the top of the mountain. Hunky Dory at number two is also great; and your three favourite tracks from that album are also mine. Delighted to see David's debut album so high (released on the same day as Sgt. Pepper, the latter doing slightly better than Bowie's first album!). A tad disappointed at the relative Low-ness of Hours and even Heathen, but overall this was a very good grading selection. I would not have placed "Heroes" so highly, it suffers from being the second born after Low, in my opinion (in the way the film Predator II suffers by comparison with Predator). Anyway, to conclude, you have good taste, and I enjoyed this video.

I had to subscribe and comment as I often ponder the greatness of David Bowie. My buddy always use to go into the "down south Doobie Brothers and David Bowee , everyone likes a little Doobie in their funk" George Clinton rant. Bowie is hard to rank any lower than number 1. Like I say he's in my top five for sure (it's a little crowded in that room but I can't put Hendrix or steely Dan at what 18 and 22.? No way. Top five for sure. You're either on the list of great or I don't listen to it. John Prine, guy Clark, towns Van Zant... come on top 5 for sure but Bowie is a solid no 1 he's got so many greats. When you give away sonds and make them legends. It's crazy. I have to ask someone who knows music better than I. I think China girl is a tribute to Buck Owens, made in Japan. The Srv riff is a lot like made in Japan.

I've been a Bowie fan for 52 years ever since I heard Jean Genie at the age of 11 and bought AS. Always interested to hear other Bowie fans perspective and how they differ. Hardly surprising my firm favourites are every album ( with the exception of PU) from SO to YA. DD being my No1. my PUs is great and I agree with comments on it. YA is absolutely fantastic there's no othe album like it. I agree with your comments on the 1st Bowie album but it doesn't compare with his general output. ( No Toy! sure it must count) For me LD and T are at the bottom along with SMASC ( which wasn't influenced by the New Romantics. He influenced them). And Heroes right down there. Apart from the title track the whole thing leaves me cold. The Tin Machine albums are great and NLMD , much maligned. Day In Day Out is a truly great song. Black Star I have at 8 , outstanding. Hours, one of the lesser later albums but still really enjoyable. He never did a bad album but can't really include BOS and Labyrinth. Anyway my really big question is..... what are you doing with so many sealed albums?? Vinyl is there to be played. No point in having them otherwise.

As for Toy. It was a posthumous release of re-recorded old stuff that was shelved at the time of recording in the early 2000s (and I prefer the originals incidentally) and although my inclusion of Labyrinth was a bit cheeky, most people count BOS as a Bowie album. Everyone has slightly different criteria though. Either way. Cheers for watching!

As a Bowie record collector I found this video very interesting. But I do disagree with a lot of what you said. That's not me being nasty just different opinions. I personally don't think any album is a ten out of ten. That would mean liking every single track to a point where they are all classics. Now for me Heroes ( album version) is the best song ever written but I can't seriously say I love everything on the album. Same with Ziggy. Songs like moonage daydream/ Five year's are ten out of ten but sings such as Soul love and It ain't easy are very poor. The closest to perfection is ( and these comments are only my opinion) Scary Monsters album. It's absolutely brilliant. The weakest track being Scream like a baby is average but tracks like Because your young /Teenage Wildlife are brilliant and I'd give Kingdom Come another chance. I think it's one of his best ever covers along with Cactus ( Heathen album). Like I said not having a go. It's a good video and would love to hear what you guys think about my comments.
@alansteadreviews
@alansteadreviews Ай бұрын
Interesting to hear your thoughts. I will go more deeply into individual tracks on my album reviews when I finally get round to them (soonish). As for songs being perfect, I think that can change with each listen and be based on many different factors so impossible to gauge definitely for most songs. Many people don't give perfect 10s for albums when reviewing, but if I were to go by that philosophy, I probably wouldn't give any album a 10. Ziggy for instance has tracks that are A tier and S (top) tier, however taken collectively as a whole it's S tier all the way for me on that album (for instance)... That's not mathematical I know - maybe I'll explain better in a future video... Cheers for watching!

i could only have minor quibbles. I never do top 10s, or top anythings with music, so I wouldn't suggest order changes. I generally agree on the weaker releases. I was pleased to see the eponymous debut being well regarded. I love it too, but some seem to think of it as a guilty pleasure. My first exposure was the Images album (Green cover) in about 1980, but the deluxe double CD is the way to go. The only one that I may shock fans with, is I never really gelled with Diamond Dogs. I don't know why, but there we are, I've said it now.

Yes that's an interesting aspect of it and that led to some cool ideas like the grungy end of Sweet Thing reprise which probably wouldn't have occurred to a more experienced lead guitarist. I did read an article recently about the fact that Alan Parker despite playing the riff on Rebel Rebel didn't get the credit he deserved and although Bowie came up with the riff mostly, Alan Parker added the little inflection (if that's the right word) at the end before it loops round.

One thing that I rarely hear people mention is how cleverly hilarious Bowie is on his string of brilliant albums throughout the 70s. Not only is Diamond Dogs one of my favorite albums of all time, it is absolutely hilarious from the initiation of the first vocals on the intro to the chant that closes out the album, lol. He had this unique ability to make me laugh and think at the same time while writing really clever and creative lyrics that are open to interpretation allowing the listener to interpret the songs however he or she needs to. It’s a unique aspect of Bowie’s character that’s visible throughout much of the output that I’ve heard from him (I haven’t really gotten into his music from the 90s or later yet, but from the little bit that I’ve heard it seems to be a bit more serious in tone).

You're right. Bowie has a great sense of humour throughout his early work that is slightly lost on many later records. If you are looking for a later album that has that sense of humour then 'Outside' or at least parts of it might appeal to you. Actually 'Heathen' and 'The Next Day' to an extent too... But none of them as much as his classic period.

A mostly agreeable ranking. I would remove Hunky Dory from the top 5 and replace it with either Scary Monsters or Station to Station, but I also can't argue with the choices you made for your top 5. Bowie's top 5 is really closer to top 8. There's not enough space to squeeze them all in! One nitpick, though. You're not too keen on "Rebel Rebel" repeating its riff throughout most of the song. Well, not only would I argue that that's the point of the song, but you do like "Repetition" from Lodger, which is equally repetitive in nature, so either it's the riff you don't like, or you're a slight hypocrite.
@alansteadreviews

Cheers. As for Rebel Rebel vs Repetition... Although the riff on both repeats on Repetition it is more subtle and on Repetition it is less prominent for me production wise (subjectively speaking) and when combined with all the really cool sound effects which grab your attention in the foreground it creates an all together more hypnotic experience. In short the repetition works for me in that song but not so much in Rebel Rebel.

"letter to Harmionei"???? Did you mean letter to harmony? NO... it seems that you are correct, but For the last 40+ years I thought that it was "A letter written to music". I just discovered that I was mistaken, or maybe I was not. By the way...Aladdin Sane...No 1 It changed my life. I still remember seeing the Album cover displayed in the window of "Casa Disca" in Barnsley on a shopping trip with my mom...(I was a kid 12...13?) The first record that I ever bought.

I love the whole thing of misheard lyrics or misread titles. One for me was The Kooks - Naive. "I know she knows that I'm not fond of asking." For years I thought that line went - "I know she knows that I'm not from the rough scene." - which made perfect sense to me. He was a nice lad and wasn't part of that whole rough scene of lairy people prone to fighting etc. They weren't her cup of tea and he was much more her scene.

I was a big fan in my teenage years, less so when I discovered more serious, sophisticated music. His opus is tricky to 'rank' due to its diversity, or range of characters he adopted. All of his Lp's, or the more famous ones, seem to have a few strong tracks and a few weak ones.

What is the music you mostly listen to now then?

@@alansteadreviews Most of the time I'm listening to music that is new to me to assess its merits, or lack of. The last LP I recall playing a few times was Louis - L'Amour.

I have to agree with most of your choices, except that you put Aladdin Sane so low, how could you do such a thing.

With Aladdin Sane for me, it's only because of the competition... It's still a 9.5... absolute classic. 🤠

Earliest of his work is as good as he gets... real big songs sung super English, arranged brilliantly... doesn't have to be "rock" to be great & valid...wrong on Watch That Man, ultra-glam!!!!

Why does nobody ever include Toy in their Bowie rankings?
@alansteadreviews
@alansteadreviews 8 күн бұрын
I personally haven't because it was a posthumous release. Though the album was recorded before Heathen its release was cancelled at the time. I didn't like it either, but that wasn't the criteria for me leaving it out.
