DAVID BOWIE AND FREDDIE MERCURY - Under Pressure - Isolated Vocals - Analysis and Tutorial
Whoever had the idea of pairing David Bowie with Freddie Mercury for the song “Under Pressure”, was definitely thinking outside of the box.
What other odd mixes can you think of where two singers with very different voice types sang together? Let me know in the comments!
As we look at the recording together, we’ll see how many different effects were used to help paint a lot of dimension with a big picture of different vocal sounds not found in your typical duet.
I’ll also show you how Freddie gets his sound by compressing his air and manning up with his diaphragm when he belts.

I'd be very interested in hearing some 80's Freddie. His voice on the A Kind Of Magic single is wasted on that song, lots of cool raspiness in the higher registers.

They'll never be another two artists like these beautiful men. The word musical genius gets thrown around today like nothing, but you can't use it enough when talking about Mercury and Bowie, true artists in every sense of the word and I will forever love and miss them both.

I saw a John Denver interview when he talked about meeting Pavarotti. One of the things Pavarotti told him was he tried to sound like what he was singing about. "So when I sing about clouds, my voice sounds like clouds". That's what I get from Bowie. Really comes through on Let's Dance.

Steve Perry, I believe. Right, Ken? He was a rare countertenor- a tenor altino, though not as many octaves as Freddie as FM was a natural baritone. SP's voice was effortlessly high with a beautiful tone. That heavy touring wrecked his delicate instrument a bit, but man, that 71 year old SP is still kicking a**!

I am the lucky owner of Ken Templin's course and it helped me a lot in my career. But this Isolated vocals series is soo cool, it's special. Along with very useful information it gives a lot to a self-confidence. After all, our idols are humans too, imperfect, struggling with their voices too. And the magic about their music is also a result of a huge work of sound-engineers, band etc. Thank you, Ken, for this series. I hope it continues, I adore it!

Ken. Thank you for this. In the 1970's there weren't that many music videos but I remember well when this song came out and the video of these two recording together was very interesting. "A singer is only a singer because they have the courage to be one." HAH!! I chuckled at that but it is sooo true. I grrw up in an environment where people feasted on each other's souls with a never ending barrage of snarky comments meant to completely destroy any self esteem. After leaving the area and creating esteem I found the courage to sing in public. Thanks Ken.

That’s a great song to go through, Ken! I suggest that you do another duet that is not as famous, because the song was never released. There are actually two or three songs that were recorded, but the one I would love to see you dissect is State Of Shock, sung and recorded by Freddie Mercury and Michael Jackson. From what I understand, the two artists did do some of it free-verse fashion. David and Freddie went into their respective recording booths and just grooved to whatever they happened to be thinking about at the moment. (There was also some alcohol and cocaine involved beforehand as well but I cannot remember which one was more smashed at the time.)

16:23 Wow, Ken! Thank you for explaining the harmony they do near the end of the song. It really makes a difference hearing it as a solo track. I like to sing harmony to most rock songs as I'm driving or just listening; and that part has always thrown me off. I could never get it right. Now I'm wondering if I was getting it right the whole time, but didn't understand the harmony they were doing, because it was dissonant. You're right, it's like they didn't want it to sound all sweet and nice. They wanted to leave you with some tension or anxiety, to reflect the songs main theme, being under pressure. Thanks again, this was a really neat discovery for me.

I remember watching a music documentary about CCR, and how John Fogerty replaced his brother as lead singer. His brother said, it wasn't that John was a better singer, but that he brought a certain emotion/style to the songs. I've always loved the human voice as an instrument! So much variance and uniqueness. Just beautiful! I find it especially interesting when a group has 2-3 singers (The Eagles, Genesis, Styx, etc) and deciding which I like more (prefer Fry over Henley, Gabriel over Collins). Frankenstein!! Ghost of David Bowie!! 🤣Aww, Ken, you're so cute 😉! I'll never be able to listen to this song again w/out hearing/imagining Frankenstein, a team of ghosts, and a sobbing-under-pressure-about-to-crack-up David Bowie!!

The way David Bowie and Freddie Mercury sang this song was that it had to be like that..melodramatic..the singing style was meant to be so..That's also the reason why this song is legendary..and so famous..(otherwise it would have been boring and not as succesfull)..It's still one of the best duet songs ever made..it's just because of the characteristic singing why it's so beautifull and unique...and what made them both, to who they where..and why theye're so loved..

I love the story about how both David and Freddie were nervous and competitive while recording this song, which is my favorite song . I love your analysis. Would it be accurate to say that Freddie is a technical singer in general? My uneducated opinion is that he's one of the best singers of all time. What do you think?

😂 Melodramatic Freddie! Love that 💕 I heard that Freddie wanted to “out sing” Bowie in the studio! 😂😂 Is it true? I know they were stoned in the session!

First of all, why did I laugh so much during this video! I loved it! U were being respected all the way, but your comments were amusing. I know this is so off, but it reminded me of one time back in the 90s, Celebrity Wheel of Fortune had Lil Richard & James Brown (RIP) on a team together. The pair was iconic, but comedy - unintentionally! Lol! Imagine them doing a duet! It would probably be similar to Bowie & Mercury, two legends doing their things regardless.

Very cool analysis. I agree with most of it myself. The intervals they used at 17:09 were non-diatonic symmetric 5ths. For the viewers that might not know what that is, it's basically mirroring the same melody a fifth above, disregarding the scale tones.
