David Bowie 1978 tour footage, predominately from the 30th of June Earls Court show, synced to "Heroes" from the album, Welcome to the Blackout, recorded live at the Earls Court shows.

The David Bowie Isolar II 1978 World Tour, also known as The Low / Heroes World Tour or The Stage Tour, hit London forty years ago. Three nights were played at the Earls Court Arena, 29th & 30th of June & the 1st of July.
The Earls Court shows were hailed as a triumph. In July ’78, the NME published Nick Kent’s review of one of the shows, which ended with, “That shimmering sizzle, that fizzy brilliance that is undeniably attuned to Bowie's work, was all there on Thursday. It impressed me, it entertained me and very occasionally had me almost spell-bound. It was a total success.”
The never-completed and never-shown David Hemmings-directed STAGE movie, was shot at the last two Earls Court shows. The forty year old undigitised reels for which, are to this day gathering dust at the Bowie archive. The STAGE movie is perhaps the ultimate lost treasure of the Bowie cannon. For decades it’s been the subject of much speculation among fans, who are desperate to see it. So with my video here, we have at least a small taste of how the film might be. The combination of the magnificent version of “Heroes” from Welcome to the Blackout, and the excellent footage mostly from the same show, shot by the LWT crew, is I think one of the best documents we have from the ‘78 tour.
This video serves as a very personal memento for me, of the concert that I most wish I had been able to attend. In the summer of 1978, I was already a Bowie fan. However, I was only 11 years old. I don’t remember if I was aware of the tour at the time, but regardless there would have been no way my parents would have allowed me to go. I do remember that I saw at some point, at least part of the LWT Bowie Special TV program, that was shot at the Earls Court shows. I don’t know how I could have seen the show when it was first broadcast because my parents were not high-brow types; they would not have been interested in watching an alternative arts show. And moreover I have a vague recall that my Dad was irritated by the presenter of the show, Janet Street-Porter.
There was a part of the interview Bowie gave on the show, where he mentioned that he would be touring again in one or two years, and I knew that I wanted to be at those shows. Sadly, that tour never materialized, and it would be 5 years until he came back to play live, doing the Serious Moonlight thing. But by then, I was no longer a child, times had changed, and Bowie’s current Let’s Dance pop music and style did not appeal to me. As I have said many times, the show that I caught at London’s Wembley Arena, in 1983, was the big musical disappointment of my life.

There is in existence, a perfect HD digital transfer of the LWT material. Unfortunately I don’t have it. And so instead what we have here is a matrix I’ve cobbled together of 7 different versions of the footage, that I’ve collected over the years. All versions are incomplete, and contain considerable glitches. Combining all these versions, gets around most of the issues, but causes some variance in quality, and moreover still leaves us with about 30 seconds missing from the performance. You may decide for yourself, if that particular issue has been convincingly masked here.
Thanks for watching, hope you dig it!

I was lucky enough to see David Bowie in concert 19 times from 1974 to 2004. This includes a Tin Machine show at the Hollywood Palladium in December 1991. My first concert was the Diamond Dogs show at the Universal Amphitheater in September 1974, five days before my fifteenth birthday. From there I saw him in 1976- the Forum, 1978-the Forum, 1983 ( four times - the US Festival, The Forum 2x, Anaheim Stadium with Madness and the Go-Go's), 1987(with Siouxsie and the Banshees 2x-Anaheim Stadium), 1990-Dodger Stadium, 1995- the Forum with Nine Inch Nails, 1997- Universal Amphitheater, 2002-Irvine Meadows, 2004( five times- 4 with Macy Gray and one with the Polyphonic Spree- Wiltern Theater 2x, Shrine Auditorium 2x, and the Anaheim Pond. The Pond show was his last time in SoCal. Since his death, not a day goes by when I do not have a memory of at least one of these nights I sat in the audience watching him and his bands performing. He was a brilliant man. We won't see one like him again.

Adrian Belew playing guitar, recently poached from Frank Zappa. Many know the story of Zappa, Belew and Bowie. For those who don't, it went like this: In 1978, Zappa and his "Rocking Teenage Combo" was on tour in Germany. Adrian Belew was in the band at that time. Brian Eno saw a show and was impressed with Belew. Got on the blower to Bowie and told him to get his ass to a Zappa show to see this guitarist Zappa had. Bowie went to see a show, approached Adrian to have dinner with him to discuss joining his band. After the Zappa gig, Belew and Bowie went to a restaurant for dinner. Of all the restaurants in Berlin, Zappa walked into the same place and saw Belew and Bowie sitting together. It didn't take any time to figure out that Bowie was looking to steal Belew away from Zappa. Zappa immediately showed his displeasure by saying "Fuck you, Captain Tom!" Bowie, ever the gentleman responded with "Can't we handle this like adults" or words to that effect. Zappa repeated "Fuck you, Captain Tom!" From a bar-band existence in Nashville to Zappa, then to Bowie and onto a solo career and King Crimson for good measure, Adrian Belew has had a stellar career. Thank Frank for picking him out of a bar-band and giving him his real break.

Best period of Bowie (in my humble opinion) - Around his berlin period he surrounded himself with some amazing musicians, Robert Fripp, Carlos Alomar, Brian Eno, Tony Visconti, Adrain Belew. While all of his 70's music was great, the Heroes album and Low (and scary Monsters) stand apart for me and still feel fresh and modern.

Incredible backing licks (and drumming) by all players! This is one of the slowest versions of Heroes there is, and I think it makes the song deeper, more suspenseful, and forces the music fills between words to be better. Too many live shows "rush" songs, hype them up for rock effect but spoil the innate groove. This version is sublime in all ways musically.

Despite the song's later mass acclaim, it was initially a failure, peaking at number 24 on the UK Singles Chart and failing to chart in the US. It wasn't until Bowie's Live Aid performance in 1985 did the song become recognized as a classic. Bowie later remarked in 2003: "This is a strange phenomenon that happens with my songs Stateside. Many of the crowd favourites were never radio or chart hits, and '"Heroes"' tops them all. wiki

this must have been how Bowie was in the studio. If you compare his albums with live performances, the studio vocals are always so much more tasteful and subtle. Live he always seemed self conscious, as if he felt the need to perform for the crowd in gratuitous ways. "Silly", as Iman once called him. In this live performance, there doesn't seem any distraction from being live and it is overwhelming to see him at his best as a pure vocalist. it's mind bending.

I remember jamming to this song one hot, steamy night in the summer of 1985 when I was 25 and dating a professional ballerina. We were rocketing down the Parkway towards Mt. Vernon with the moon reflecting off the still waters of the Potomac to our left. It was early morning, nearly 2AM....Tina had gotten off work from her part-time gig as a bartender in Old Towne, Alexandria and we had the whole of the night to ourselves, to the dreams of things that might one day come. I remember her face, illuminated by the dull incandescent glow of the dashboard, looking at me, listening to this song, her eyes and lips filled with passion....I knew that this song made her see me in an entirely different light from how she had seen other boyfriends. The music connected our hearts and souls.
