David Bowie • Station To Station • Live 1978

This video was created from footage shot in Tokyo in December 1978, synced to the audio of Station To Station, from the 2005 remaster of the 1978 live album “Stage”.

*Updating these notes on the 29th of March 2020 - the date in 1978 that David Bowie commenced his Isolar II 1978 World Tour, at the San Diego Sports Arena*
In addition, since originally creating and posting this video here in September 2016, it has recently become the first one on my channel to hit one million views.
So, thanks a million for watching!

David Bowie's Isolar II 1978 World Tour, also known as The Low / “Heroes” World Tour or The Stage Tour, ran through North America, Europe and Australia and New Zealand before reaching it's conclusion at the NHK Hall in Tokyo, on the 12th of December, 1978. Eighty dates were played, with a total attendance of almost 1.2 million people.

"Stage" was recorded live at the Philadelphia, Boston and Providence shows, in Spring ’78.
Tony Visconti has confirmed that the version of Station To Station on Stage, is a hybrid of two performances from those shows. Listening to an audience recording of Station To Station, from the Philadelphia show on the 28th of April, the Belew guitar squeals in the intro sound remarkably similar to the version we hear on "Stage'.
“From a mammoth synth train reproduction to the young Adrian Belew staking his claim as the song’s definitive guitarist to a Bowie vocal that’s all sinew, it’s arguably the song’s finest performance. The band uses the key change as a signal to rocket off: there’s an intense communal joy to this music, and even Bowie gets carried away by it." From the Pushing Ahead of the Dame "Station To Station" essay @ bowiesongs.wordpress.com/…/12...
The video footage used here, is from the final night of the 1978 tour, in Tokyo on the 12th of December. It is the only known complete footage of Station to Station from the ’78 tour. However, whilst the quality of the sound recording is quite good, the sound mix and moreover the performance is just not great. Bowie’s vocal is not one of his best, and Adrian Belew’s wild guitar explorations veer perhaps a bit too wildly off course. Whereas Station to Station from "Stage" has been one of my favourite Bowie moments since I first heard the album, when I was around 12 years old. I would sit in my bedroom, at my parents house, with the volume up as high as I was allowed, with my disco lights flashing away wildly to the crazy intro of synthesized train noises, and George Murray’s and Dennis Davies thrilling deep bass and drums buildup.
So anyway, a video was required I decided. And despite the fact that every video I make seems to take an eternity in maddening minuscule details, I imagined, “Ah! This will be a nice quickie”. After all, how difficult can it be to match two live versions of the same song, from the same tour? A huge problem was that the version of Station to Station on "Stage" has been heavily edited, shaving off several minutes from the original. Whole sections are gone, parts of verses, the guitar break much reduced, the intro heavily edited down etc. What’s more, the Tokyo version is very much longer - in excess of 13 minutes long. So that gave me a lot of continuity problems. And as always, Mr. David Bowie changes the vocal emphasis throughout, and even changes / omits / adds lyrics, all creating huge difficulties. And lastly, the other big hassle was matching the improvised guitar squealings by that other wild card in the '78 tour pack, Mr. Adrian Belew!
Anyway, it did eventually come together in a fairly satisfactory way, I think.
Thanks for watching, hope you dig it!

I've seen him live many times and every period was phenomenal to me. It was always an amazing experience. The last time I saw him live was The Reality Tour and I'll never forget that I had to cover my ears a few times when a song ended because the audience was so loud screaming & cheering. I'll never forget when he performed "The Loneliest Guy" it was as if the air was sucked out of the room but it was me losing my breath. His vocals were magical.

This tour stopped in Chicago / Arie Crown Theater, for 2 nights in April of 1978. I went to both shows. Knowing that Bowie favors the right side of the stage, we made sure to get our seats there. Think I was in the 18th row. On the 2nd night, I was determined to get to the stage so I could give him a picture I drew of him in high school, w/ a letter I wrote on the back. During the encore, my sister and I ran up the isle and the usher didn't dare stop us. I was wearing a handmade halter, w/ Rebel Rebel in rhinestones on the front. David took notice, as I was smiling and waving and looking so fine ...and I gave him my gift. My sister snapped a pic just as he was reaching out to me, w/ the biggest smile. He then put the foil wrapped tube in his mic stand and finished the concert. I rec'd follow up phone calls at my job, on my birthday, from his asst., Corrine, thanking me, etc. on behalf of David Bowie. You can imagine how I felt when I rec'd those calls. I have to wonder where my artwork is now, somewhere in his archives I'd imagine. Sorry for the long post, I had to share after I watched your video. Thanks Nacho.

David was probably the single best songwriter who ever lived. He worked masterfully over decades in so many genres, often anticipating (or initiating?) coming trends in music, sound, and fashion. A great example is Low. What an alien sound at the time. Came out of nowhere. But it predated a processed, synthetic sound that became very popular in the 80’s.

saw Bowie and the Band on this tour, Lang Park Brisbane Queensland November 1978. The old grandstands shook like they would collapse at any moment. It was the loudest thing I had ever heard (until Motorhead - Saturday, August 18, 1984 Bombay Rock - Surfers Paradise). Saw him again on One more Night at the same venue in 1983. Magic.

This is truly one of the greatest. Bowie wrote this at the peak of his coke and blackmagic craze; it's layered with so much wisdom, his getting back to Europe really is his redemption from his addiction. Credit also should go out to his primarily African American band such as Allomar whose guitar work makes this song what it is. Incredible, how close this version is to the studio recording depsite it being such a complex song.

Few artists can claim to be one of the timelines of the annals of rock, Bowie is one of those. So many things, artists, sounds were derived from his various incarnations in the 70s. Of course having himself surrounded by so many talented players, producers and artistic visionaries didn't hurt. But in the end, it mostly began and ended with him, and what an amazing ride it was.

This show in 78 I was 18.Still the greatest show I have seen 40yrs later.Neon tube lights stunning and Adrians mindbending solo always in my mind almost daily still! The venue Western Springs Stadium Auck N.Z. surrounded by giant pine trees to add to the amphitheatre setting. A perfectly still night and the intro: David Bowie will be onstage in 5mins. A huge surge forward I was 10metres to the stage.Warszawa was surreal and Heroes immediately after left me breathless.A magnificent moment in rock history as was Station live. Saw him 3 more times 83,87 and Reality.I've seen around 150 shows and this one triumphs above all.Stage is a beautiful reminder I play often still

If u give me time I hope to find a Bowie fan club in NZ and seek out anything to help you with that. This show 42,000 which was a record for NZ in 78.He then went on to pull 82,000 in'83 with Moonlight which is still a record for Australasia for a paying attendance.I'm an Absolute Beginner who wishes to share his knowledge.Thankyou Nacho

I LOVE this intro on station to Station, heard in the Christiane F.movie, that we saw in 6'th grade in scool to scare us from doin drugs (did'nt work),but i have never felt so good!!,and i thakns for that!!! Because it got me into MUSIC and i thakns Bowie for the theme music in this exellent film (german), google it,watch it,and if it dont get to you, well i dont have a problem, you do! It's based on a true story and i have never forgotten ut,even if i went in the same trap as Christin,R.I.P. But,even if is a,"old" movie, the theme is still relevant today,sadly.... But maybe YOU learn from it and if so, thakns Bowie and i love to scare you straight!!! Like i've finally did😅!! I'm now,51, and i love to live every day!!!! Thakns for Reading a true story and i wish you well, stay strong,!!!!! ED.

I'm thinking these videos will keep going up, because Bowie once said on a talk show in the 2000s that even he never bought CDs anymore. I think to keep his spirit alive, all this stuff needs to stay up as much as possible. Somehow, I think he would have wanted it that way, especially knowing that his family would be financially fine, regardless.

Alexander...ANOTHER unforgettable classic by Bowie. One moves from the strident purpose of 'Station to Station' to the totally engulfing romance of 'Wild is the Wind'. Choose? How can one?!? Both infiltrate, at some points, however far apart, aspects of our lives...And for that we sigh - or are grateful. Just about both, perchance...Perchance to dream?

Grew-up in the 70's with BOWIE. My best friends father bought tickets to the STATION TO STATION tour and we saw him live at the Springfield Civic Center in Springfield Mass. on March 21st, 1976 ( I was about to turn 15). Needless to say, this show changed my life (I was never the same afterward). We still, to this very day, talk about that concert in vivid detail ... it was a total and complete BRAIN-BENDER ! ! How very lucky was I to have seen this show in 1978 when he came to Auckland, New Zealand. It will forever be the very best. 70,000 people bathing in the glory of Bowie at his best with a fabulous band. The minor disappointment that Eno didn't tag along was soon forgotten. This song live, swirling around the speakers placed around the stadium, was truly awesome even though it's not even in my top ten Bowie songs. Thankyou David and Thankyou Nacho!

I discovered David Bowie in the 1980's when I read the book "We children from Zoo station" and then saw the indifferent German movie. David worked specifically on this film. His song "Station to station" was very importend to Christiane F. (the film is about her and her drug addition). The fate of Christiane F. and David's music touched me deeply. Since than, I haven't been able to hear David Bowie enough and deeply regret that I never saw him live.
