@@Alex-ht8hg ...Anti-establishment~ I agree, Bowie was spot on. By saying, "in its white form," he likely knew that original rock & roll stemmed from the blues... Here the comparison was more about the rock that shocked & offended the 50's prim & proper middle/upper class population. (Generally speaking. IDK why it would have to be "white" but helped make his point with the 2nd part of his statement. There were famous exceptions in every music genre.)

The bit where the other guy was praising Bowie, saying that he was "more American than Americans" is referring to the fact that America (USA) is supposed to be the land of the free, land of opportunity, etc. This American ideal sounds altruistic and considerate for all but many people here aren't. The Hispanics are our neighbors yet many of us treat them like trash, and for what? A British guy across the pond considers them honestly and talks about them in a light that isn't negative.

In 1993, it was true. Today, not so much. Bowie always had his finger on the pulse of interesting movements in music and art. Whether creating it himself or admiring that of others, he remained keenly aware of what was the current state of art and music. Nearly 30 years later, Hip Hop is further away from that incomparable era as Rock and Roll was from the late 60’s at the time this was recorded.

I mean you’re not wrong, but as someone who’s seen him live over a dozen times as a teen in the 70s, I can confidently say he was a very underwhelming front man. Best live performance he ever did was probably live at mantra studios in Chicago with Iggy Pop circa 1977 and even then I’d say his vocal delivery was so soft and quiet for some reason. Iggy pop really outshined him. As the years went on the coke really affected his singing abilities. A lot of times even having to drop keys. Love the mans studio work though. That’s what will always outlive him.

Albums like The Money Store by Death Grips, Some Rap Songs by Earl Sweatshirt, War In My Pen by MIKE, Veteran by JPEGMAFIA, Little Dominique's Nosebleed by Koreatown Oddity, etc are really quality and not "sellout". i'm not a fan of bowie, per se but do hv a great deal of respect for his musical abilities..and he had an awesome voice..however what ive heard of hip hop/ rap is a lot anger, negativety, aggression, glorification of prison, etc ..this is what i hear blasting from cars on the street..maybe theres more i hvnt heard thats positive, encouraging, inspiring, etc.. hope so..

I love Bowie, and respect him, and agree that hip hop was innovative as hell at the time, but that era was probably the last great era of rock at the time. Now if he would've said this a few years later... Then yeah, I'd agree 10000%.

Though I'm not a fan of rap, I love David Bowie. He looks so handsome and beautifully done groomed in this clip. I think he went through many creative phases in his life, and often shocked people with his avant guard appearance & style. But there was always something solid about his artistry as a musician. Very complex gentleman, but very cool! RIP, David.

If you know anything about Bowie his comment shouldn't surprise you. He connected with those who were socially concious, and ever aware. He was no slouch when it came to originality and the cutting edge. In fact he is noted as taking the lead in this. Literaly reinventing himself over and over again throughout his career. While the status quo were dismissive of this new fad (hip hop), It caught Bowie's attention.
