For real. And Prince just a few months after Bowie! Ye gods! I mused who was more musically brilliant, and I had to choose Prince (I mean, come on now, it's Prince, lol!), but the fact that it was worthy of consideration says a lot about how gigantic Bowie's talent was! And his INTERVIEWS! Oh, how endlessly watchable and wonderful he was!

So glad I got to see this legend at Glastonbury 2000, belting out the hits. Bowie is one of those who just was a totally unique one-off, I'd suggest doing his other classics like Life on Mars, Changes, Heroes, Ashes to Ashes and so on. Real musical genius, you'll love him.

I was lucky enough to be there too, it was the last year before the super wall went up so the site was definitely over populated! I turned around during Bowie's set to look back and the crowd seemed to go on forever. And then he played Heroes and I was in bits! Special.

@@davidmannion7333 I know...a mate of mine said he'd watch Bowie for a couple of songs and then go over to the acoustic stage to see another act. He turned to look at the crowd - we were stood to the right of the mixing desk - and said 'Oh F***' realising by the time he got out of the crowd & made it to the acoustic stage, he'd have missed most of it, so he remained to watch Bowie😄

I absolutely loved your reaction! You said near to the end "bring me down" and that was really genius. It made me realize that the music keeps going up, creating tension that is never released, and that was genius. The song rakes you high just as the spaceship keeps going further away from earth without the ability to come back down. I have listened to this song so many times and your reaction made me see that beautiful detail for the first time, thank you!

When we get to the 80s decade you might want to check out Peter Schillings Major Tom (Coming Home) which came out in 1982. It is a song in response to the character in Bowie's Space Oddity. It is an unofficial sequel but details Major Tom losing contact with ground control and heading off into space. 😂

You say "Pink Floyd vibe," but David Bowie actually performed Pink Floyd's "Arnold Layne" and "Comfortably Numb" (which I think you've already reacted to) with David Gilmour live. Still, Bowie is great; he kept reinventing himself in new and interesting ways!

The David Bowie rabbit hole is probably one of the deepest. He had so many fantastic songs... albums!I don't even know where to start with suggestions. I'll try to start with what I think would send you specifically: Young Americans Under Pressure (with Queen) Fame (with John Lennon) Changes Heroes Suffragette City I'm Afraid Of Americans Rebel Rebel That's as short as I can possibly make a starting list for you. David Bowie is a whole genre unto himself. It still hurts that he's gone.

I'm not sure our pal, Hector, got what happened to Major Tom in the latter part of the song, because he didn't show any reaction to it. That's not a criticism of him, because it was his first listen and he was understandably lost in the sauce. There's a lot to take in. But it's cool, it just means he'll experience that poignant reveal in a subsequent listen. And when he does, it will enhance his appreciation of the song exponentially. This is one of the 10 best rock/pop songs of all-time.

Everything's enunciated clearly, so you won't need the lyrics in front of you. Discover what it was that eluded you in the story, just through listening. Another of the first songs concerned with space travel is Jethro Tull's "For Michael Collins, Jeffrey and Me" from their "Benefit" album. Michael Collins was a member of the Apollo 11 crew, that was the mission of the first lunar landing, but he was the one who remained in the Command Module while the others descended to the moon's surface and became the first men to walk on the moon,. (I am embarrassed to admit that all of this was lost on me back in the day, it was actually fairly recently that I finally delved into the song's lyrics.) The "Benefit" album was released in 1970, so maybe you will consider this song for your 1970s week.

Yay, Bowie!! His catalogue is extensive, so settle in. You should listen chronologically, as his music helped pave the way forward. There's a sense of evolution to his music. No two albums are alike - in my opinion - and he was so avant-garde that I'll admit he lost me a couple of times, & I had to 'grow' in order to catch up. Choose anything, it's all good. Thanks.

There's a sort of "sister" song to this: "Ashes to Ashes.," where Bowie sings about Major Tom as a "junkie" among other things (There's your drug reference, heh. Tho I'm not convinced THIS song is about drug use. Maybe.) David Bowie was a sort of miraculous human. Unbelievably talented, incredibly good-looking, an absurdly great voice, highly intelligent, and funny AF to boot! Here he displays all those qualities while (it's just two minutes) he impersonates Mick Jagger! Cheers! kzfaq.info/get/bejne/hJ1daqt7qL7cYWQ.html

Dude, you need to listen to more Bowie. For me there are a small handful of artists who break the mould. They transcend what everyone else around them is doing. And Bowie is right at the top of that list... along with people like Prince, Bjork, The Beatles... to be honest, given my advancing years I never thought I'd find another one of those transcendent artists, but recently Ren has muscled his way to the top table too. Another thing Bowie and Ren have in common is they can sound completely different depending what song you're listening to. Check out Ashes to Ashes for the next installment of Major Tom's trip. And in no particular order, have a listen to "Heroes", Let's Dance, Hearts Filthy Lesson, Sweet Thing/Candidate/Sweet Thing (reprise), Life on Mars?, Five Years... I could go on. And so should you...
