Re: Bowie playing instruments; On this album he did all the guitars, except in one song. He was panned by the critics for the guitar work, but I think if you listen you'll be impressed. The story was that after he broke up the Spiders From Mars (with Mick Ronson) he was trying to audition other guitarists for this album, but couldn't find anyone with the feel he wanted. Listen to the strange distorted guitar backgrounds in some of the songs (such as Sweet Thing/Candidate), it's a main staple for the overall 'feel' of the whole album. He's also an excellent piano, keyboard, saxophone, and harmonica player.

There's probably nothing on there that's gonna make the average person sit up and say: "Wow! Listen to that shredding!" but it is an impressive, unique performance on guitar throughout this album. I can't imagine many guitarists, whatever their skill level, who do not wish they had thought up and played that signature riff on "Rebel, Rebel" or do not admire that slinky Stonesy rhythm guitar on the title track. And that noise fest he goes into at the end predates Sonic Youth by several years...
@shavenprimates
@shavenprimates Жыл бұрын
@@jonathanlocke6404 Nice story on that riff: This song was created in a spate of spontaneous inception. Alan Parker, the guitarist on "1984," recalled to Uncut magazine: "He (Bowie) said, 'I've got this list and it's a bit Rolling Stonesy - I just want to piss Mick off a bit.'" "I spent about three quarters of an hour to an hour with him working on the guitar riff - he had it almost there, but not quite," Parker continued. "We got it there, and he said, 'Oh, we'd better do the middle...' So he wrote something for the middle, put that in. Then he went off and sorted some lyrics. And that was us done."

as a long time bowie FANATIC, i'd rate this as one of his best compositions and in the Top 3 vocal performances in his career (but what do i know). this song is like a movie within itself. just brilliant. That said, this album should be listened to in it's entirety as it all ties together (concept album).. fantastic album. Bowie played guitar, sax and mellotron on this i believe.

Dude,,well done. Everybody else reacting to Bowie only ever cover the famous, hit singles. And gauge Bowie according to those. Not many do the deep dive into the goldmine of his, usually, overlooked work. His real reputation is founded on this stuff. You've obviously listened to Diamond Dogs. My favourite part is the transition from Big Brother, to, Chant Of The Ever Circling Skeletal Family. In fact now you've reminded me to remind myself, guess where I'm off to now. But first, Smokey time.

this is 1974. he played guitar sax percussions and programmed the synths. he mixed the album together with the sound engineer and produced it. One thing you should know almost all Bowie's songs are not autobiographical they are stories often taken from his dreams and he often puts himself in someone else shoes when he sings to make a point for example there is a song he wrote in 1997 entitled "I'm afraid of Americans" (by the way maybe you could like it) and It's not him talking he lived and worked in America for years he worked with american musician from 1974 onwards he's impersonating the people who can say that.

Recorded during the beginnings of Bowie’s cocaine psychosis - lyrics preoccupied with drugs, the occult, and suicide. Bowie’s first self produced album, with all instruments except bass, drums and piano played by Bowie himself. The album was not recorded well, and according to mixer Tony Visconti was “a real salvage job” - the feedback heavy and ragged mix preempted punk by several years, and this album is thought to have ended the glam rock era. One of his classic albums.

THIS tour was my First introduction (induction) to concerts. Just bought 2 tix and didn't have anyone to go with so I took or got taken by my older coworker ( he drove) Diamond Dogs set the bar for live performance. There is also a live show taped based on this album called The 1980 Floor Show ( there's a back story to the tittle, look it up) shown on NBC in 73. That was a musical epitome and a visual mind fuck.....in a good way; the only way one should be, I suppose.

I've been listening and loving this on "DIamond Dogs" since it was released in 1974. I read criticisms of this album, but it is, hands down, my favorite of his. "Sweet Thing - Candidate - Sweet Thing (Reprise)" is brilliant. So is "Big Brother". I love these so much. But if I could only ever listen to one song from this album from now on, I would choose, "We Are The Dead". In all these songs, he was incredibly creative. I loved the dystopian decadence then, and love it no less now. Stunning.

...it's a terrible, terrible shame ( crime?) that on platforms like youtube Rebel Rebel is cut off. It's an intrinsic part of the song. I understand it has to be cut off, but RR is such a part of Sweet Thing/Candidate/Sweet Thing ( reprise) that it seems wrong without it. After that utterly beautiful cacophony, Rebel Rebel comes straight in like a goddam bullet and ... it just needs to be heard,all of the first side in its entirety to get the full experience

Great reaction man! Such joy to see new people getting into the unique phenomenon that Bowie was. This song paints a dire picture of decadenze and moral decay, like something from Clockwork Orange. I dont know how this guy managed to turn these albums containing such bleak subject matters into number one sellers. having said that Bowie had lots of cheerful stuff as well, because he was all over the place..vaudeville,folk,hard rock,glam,soul,funk,electronica,drum n bass, etc, etc. Any other artist who would have dared exporing so vastly different styles from album to album would have been doomed for failure and embarrassment, but never Bowie, no matter what he experimented with it turned into gold.

Who gave you the compass on this? Keep following it. It's the stuff that didn't get played to death that is breathtaking. Somebody mentioned David Live from the Tower Theater in Philadelphia, they're right. Double album but well worth it. Earl Slick on guitar and David Sanborn ripping a hole in the space/time continuum, not a bad song on either disc. By the way, a great rendition of Sweet Thing/Candidate.

You have to listen to Future Legend to get the overall feel of the theme of Diamond Dogs. Bowie approached the widow of George Orwell to do "1984" as the album theme, but she said no. Bowie on this tour had a "street with a deal" as part of the overall set and he would walk as he sang this song. The guitar is decadent and dirty.....just like the theme.

The tension of Sweet Thing building to the propulsive, insistent Candidate and then the instrumental squall segueing into Rebel Rebel is one of the most thrilling things I've heard. Rock and Roll With Me also compelling...I'm in tears... Sorry, that was really pretentious but I'm quite, quite drunk 😂
