David Garibaldi's LEGENDARY Drum Groove (Drum Lesson)

The Oakland Stroke is one of David Garibaldi's most legendary and recognized drum grooves. Fun fact: it was created entirely by accident while rehearsing with Tower of Power bandmates Emilio Castillo and Stephen Kupka. It would later turn into a jam that was the opener and closer to their album "Back to Oakland". So in this lesson, David breaks down how to play this incredible beat and shows you what you need to know to perfect it.
Everyone knows that David is held in the highest regard within the drumming community; his touch is dynamic and incredible; his timing, feel, and groove is second to none; and his creativity is enviable. So hopefully, some of this rubs off on your own playing as you learn to play the "Oakland Stroke".
Kick back and enjoy as we dive into David Garibaldi's legendary drum groove that is the "Oakland Stroke".

Beats don't get much more difficult than this. The accents on the snare/bass/hi hats in the last measure are a true challenge. I still haven't mastered it. Dave makes it look so easy. A killer beat.

I really love it when David Garibaldi contributes an article to an issue of Modern Drummer. I still have an issue of MD from early '97 that contains a sweet article by him where he uses the different permutations/variations of the paradiddle to create funk beats. I have lots of old (late 80's-late 90's) issues of Modern Drummer that I've managed to save because of the cool stuff like the Rock and Jazz Clinic articles, or stuff like the warmup exercise from the 1987 Cavaliers drum corps. Anything that I can still use after all these years for myself, or for a student. I listed late 80's to the late 90's mainly because I either had a subscription for some of those years, or because I started buying each month's issue from the newsstand right after I got my first set of drums in the Summer of 1987. I was like a sponge back then, learning all about these drummers I had never heard, but I would eventually. I went out and bought the first Chick Corea Elektric Band cassette just because it had this guy named Dave Weckl on it. I had seen his name and face so many times on the pages of Modern Drummer magazine that I had to find out what all of the fuss was about. I was 15 and had never heard anything like it! But I became a fan of Weckl's right from the start, as well as the rest of the members in the Chick Corea Elektric Band. Kudos David Garibaldi and Modern Drummer magazine! Oh yeah, and Drumeo!!

Me too, drew. Back in the day I made two big 3-inch binders filled with different Modern Drummer articles and exercises that I used to practice to. I still have 'em. Your post made me pull them out of the closet and look at them for the first time in many years. At a glance, I see that I have two great articles from Dave Garibaldi titled 'Changuito's Groove' (from Nov. 1995) and 'Developing the Afro-Cuban Feel' (from May 1996). I used to practice both of these a lot. Also like you, I still have a box or two of old MD's from the 80's and 90's. I've thought about digitally scanning them myself into my computer and tossing the mags, or buying digitally archived copies from MD if they're available and reasonably priced. Do you or anyone else here have any experience buying digital archives (preferably everything they've issued) from MD?
@drewper73
@drewper73 4 жыл бұрын
Bhola Oates I just got through subscribing to Modern Drummer for a year. My subscription was just a print + digital subscription. That meant that I would receive the printed copy at my house and I could also browse through that month’s issue online. It wasn’t until after that subscription ran out that I decided to subscribe to their Archives on a monthly basis for $5.99/month. It was like hitting the MD jackpot! With that little monthly subscription, I was able to view AND download every single issue of Modern Drummer in pdf format. And I did it! Did it take up a lot of room? Yep. But there are some gems in there! Old issues with Bonham, Gadd, Rich, Bruford, Stewart Copeland, etc. I canceled my subscription after the Peart tribute issue was available to me. I figured that was a good place to stop, for now. He was on the cover probably more than anybody else up to this point. The state of the magazine is a little sad these days though. Last December’s issue had Danny Carey on the cover. 13 years earlier, in July 2006 I think it was, also had Carey on the cover but the ‘06 issue was about 100 pages longer than the ‘19 issue. And so goes the way of print media these days. I remember at some point in the ‘90s the magazine shortened its pages by a little less than a centimeter making the magazine slightly more rectangular than before. Oh well...if you have a desktop or a laptop or a few thumb drives, I would definitely recommend subscribing to the MD archives. It’s definitely worth the money. And you can come up with your own little system for naming each issue like I did. I need to go browse through some of those issues. I don’t want them to sit there and go to waste.

@@drewper73 Awesome post -- thanks a lot for that helpful info, man. Sounds like a good deal. I might do exactly what you did: subscribe to the archive, download everything and then end the sub if I don't feel it's worth it to continue. Best wishes to you during these trying times.

I first paused the video to write down the beat once it appeared on the video and went down the basement to play it on my drums. Nailed it after about 10 minutes of working it one or two notes at a time then come back and listen to him playing it and something was off. I watched him play it more but the thing I was missing it says right above the music in the video where it says omit the first bd when the pattern repeats. I'm just sharing that to save someone the time I spent trying to figure out what the heck I was doing wrong.

J T it is basically a motif. a common tool used by improv players to structure a jam or begin/end a song. Book ends means Using this Groove to begin the vinyl and end it. instead of using it for a particular song they use it to theme the album with a Jam sort of feel, like Dave says.
