Ida Haendel is considered a legend among professional musicians and listeners of classical music alike. This documentary utilizes footage that was shot between 2009 and 2017, showing the life and work of British-Polish violinist Ida Haendel. She talks about her work with the conductors Charles Munch and Sergiu Celibidache, the cellist Mstislav "Slava" Rostropovich and the violinist Isaac Stern, and about her time as violin mentor of David Garrett.

Follow us on Facebook: / wocomo
After having given her final performance, her everyday life oscillates between nostalgia and joy of living, between loneliness and hopefulness. Ida Haendel is a person of wisdom and humor, whole-heartedly accepting the challenge of spending her remaining years in a self-determined way. Though at some point she has to accept she can’t play the violin anymore, she refuses to stop singing.
“The Haendel Variations” is not an ordinary music documentary, it is not just another portrait of a world-renowned classical musician. Its rather restrained, more intimate approach focuses on the inner life of an extraordinary woman and on the two things that still give her life meaning: her love for music and for her fellow human beings.
Original title: The Haendel Variations

I love Ida. I met her several times in Miami. And I had the great privilege of attending her concerts. Always warm and friendly. My biggest regret in life is that I had the opportunity to study with her and had to turn the offer down because I was too busy at the time. I once read that age is just a number, but growing old is optional. Ida is ageless. She is forever young!

Thank you so much! At the age of nine,in Paris,Ida Haendel had George Enescu as her teacher. He told her to always respect the composer she plays,to read everything that can be found about him and she must feel the same as the one who signed the scores. The accuracy of this own attitude towards the score and its character, always gives the accuracy of the interpretation. I am very proud that Sergiu Celibidache 's hometown it's also my hometown. There,in the following years, international violin, piano, classical music competitions will take place, right in the house where he was born.

Hi Marcel - I had the same reaction. Ida was one of the greatest violinists of our time. Whoever needs that kind of introduction to her and her legacy deserves our pity. I was privileged to hear her many times, and she was a titan of the instrument and the big concerto repertoire. A revelation. Especially superb, and consistently so, were her Brahms and Sibelius. She passed away yesterday, after a long life dedicated to music, and many of us will remember her with great fondness and admiration. R.I.P., Ida!

Though I never met her, Ida is a part of my life as I listen to her recordings every week. You have shocked me a little, although we all knew the day would come. The only thing I can think to do is put on some Ida Haendel - her recording of the Britten violin concerto is one of my favorite. To szczęście i przeznaczenie. I korzenie ! Ze wschodu. Jak miło było posłuchać silnego głosu, silnej osoby w czystym ojczystym, niezwykle poprawnym i bogatym języku polskim. Żal,że pani Ida Haendel tak mało znana w kraju .Czas to zmienić.Koniecznie. Dziękuję za ten film.❤

I would wake her up for early therapy sessions by playing different works of hers on KZfaq on my smart phone. I once asked Ida why she never married, she responded, " Because I was too hard to " "haendel" and " no man was good enough for me"....that's our IDA! She spoke adoringly of her dog and told me she named it " Decca" after the recording studio that recorded Ida's musical performance. I will always remember feisty & most talented Ida Haendel! Very moving account, I sincerely hope Ms Haendel has now managed to come to terms with loss of her sister. I was lucky enough to hear her perform a few times in UK in her day - Beethoven, La Folia and Britten concerto, and she gave masterclasses at my music college (I was never good enough to play in any! At one of them she related the story of how she never practised scales, then while attending a Heifetz masterclass JH spoke about the importance of them, turned to her and asked her to confirm this, she had to admit the truth! I was cheeky enough to ask, during the questions, if she thought she could have been a better violinist if she had.) And the fiddle playing still sounds FANTASTIC!

This is so sad. Ida was a lady who received personal praise from Sibelius himself for having interpreted his vision in the highest possible way, describing her as a player of 'rare standard'. A lady who contributed so much greatness to the world of music, and yet she was so alone and heartbroken right until her last breath. What a terrible loss. The title of your video needs to be amended - it's honestly borderline offensive. To feel you need to associate her with someone else to get search hits on a video is as though to say her lifetime's achievements do not suffice in merit. Please change it. Rest in eternal peace and power, sweet Ida.

Only when I stared at the picture of Ida and David can I say that he had a wonderful mentor !!! After reading about her creative path and putting together the structure of her personality, I further upgrade the above statement. ♡♡

She lived such a good life and was such a good person. It kills me that she felt so alone and abandoned at the end 😢

This is a lovely and extremely touching documentary about a remarkable musician - but to introduce this titan of the violin, who studied with Enescu and Flesch, who played with most of the great musicians of the 20th century and who Sibelius described as his ideal interpreter, as 'David Garrett's violin mentor' is ridiculous and insulting. Who the hell is David Garrett? A crossover artist known mostly in his native Germany. Ida Haendel had been an internationally famous musician since the late 1930s.

@@christianrupp4006 which is fine if you equate popularity with worth. She was world famous and successful long before his birth, a serious artist who won the gratitude and admiration of important composers like Sibelius and Walton and universal respect from her colleagues. Garrett, for all his popularity (again, limited to a couple of countries) inhabits a different world altogether, playing fairly well for people wouldn't really know either way...

@@karinevers4846 For whom? I knew Ida Haendel, she had a rather difficult and lonely life, always travelling, no significant relationship, but always required to play wherever she went, even long into old age. Anyone might envy her extraordinary talent, but not the difficult life it demanded..

To the people complaining about the title: It’s just a way to to inroduce, to get more people interested in her, those who have not heard of her before. The title doesn’t imply : Oh, her greatest achievement is that she taught David Garret.

Sie haben so etwas von recht! You are so right. The Grande Dame of the violin taught David and praised his (like the other titan Sir Yehudi Menuhin) playing. this is what's counting and not the malicious comments.
