One from Arkansas, one from Oklahoma. Both were outstanding studio musicians in LA in the 60's before stepping into the spotlight. David was also a superior songwriter, arranger and conductor. Glen was one of the most sought-after guitarists ever, whom few knew could sing until "Gentle on My Mind" in '67. An excellent combination of talents.

Two great men that have given the world so much listening pleasure. If couples who are contemplating divorce, would spend a weekend alone with no kids or any other distractions and just really listen to the words in most of David's songs....especially 'Make It With You', they just might fall back in love again.

Gates and Campbell have been playing together for years, early 60’s. KZfaq “James Darren “life of the party “ 1963 David Gates Leon Russell Glen Campbell “ Gates played bass guitar and produced/arranged, Glen Campbell guitarist, Leon Russell (Russell Bridges) piano. Gates and Russell were playing in Oklahoma back in the late 50’s, and from what I heard, they came to California in 61’ where Campbell was already playing as a studio musician and got Gates and Leon to come to work as musicians in the studio. And what became known as the Wrecking Crew.

How did they write such beautiful music? I teared up a couple times listening to this.

Glen didn't write any of these songs. These were all written by David Gates, and this duet is a medley of the two of them doing three of David's/Bread's iconic songs. I think Glen wrote very very few of his own songs, but he so beautifully interpreted songs written by others, sometimes specifically for him.

I shed a tear with this medley. Wonder why? Maybe we are the poorer without this genre today. But richer for still being able to applaud these virtuoso stars. Glen Campbell was one hell of a muso - even developed a higher respect when I saw a video of him shredding his guitar. David Gates? Ah well what a brilliant voice, guitar player, extraordinary songwriter and the signature voice of that legendary group BREAD! JUST AWESOME

I’m not saying there isn’t any phenomenal talent these days, but it’s undeniable when these two so easily pull off something amazing like this, it isn’t seen much anymore. Either one of them strolling up to a beach campfire and joining the circle with just a guitar would never fully leave your ears no matter how many years pass.

How great would it be to have Glen Campbell sing your songs, and harmonize and play guitar with you? Campbell's voice on "Baby I'm-A-Want You" is phenomenal, he loved Gates's music, what an amazing tribute. Could listen to these guys all night, not just a 3-minute medley.

Wow, Glen Cambell's enthusiasm and talent is infectious. You can tell he loves the music. What's not to love? "Bread" was the epitome of "soft rock," and didn't we love it so in our secret heart? David Gates, the author of what, six of seven timeless classics. I don't even have to make them cause you already know them. I've seen Glen duet with others, what strikes me is: 1) How godamn good he was at it. 2) Every duet medley Glen Cambell ever did was a great song, his taste was uncanny. ..David Gates, a very low-key undemonstrative person gives Glen a little knee bump in appreciation saying "yeah buddy, we nailed it!"

My heart is broken over the fact that these two never recorded a full album together. The only way you can make David Gates's songs better is to add tight vocal harmonies... let alone a voice let Glen's.
@womanbread
@womanbread Жыл бұрын
Listen to any bread song on any bread album, and you will hear perfect, tight, beautiful vocal harmonies...done by James Griffin, who was the co-founder, singer, songwriter and guitarist in bread. Together, David and James made incredible music together while they were in bread. Sadly, James is no longer with us, nor is Larry Knechtel or Mike Botts. Only David and Robb Royer (another co-founder of the band, when they first started out in 1968/69), are still alive.

James Griffin's vocals - he was the co-founder of bread, and an amazing singer/songwriter in his own right - could match and accompany David's vocals beautifully. Just listen to any song by bread, on any bread album, and you will hear James' beautiful vocals and amazing harmonies. Please remember James...he was amazing, but sadly, he's been gone since 2005.
