People are approaching this album the wrong way. Gilmour isn’t trying to break the charts or to make the next masterpiece of an album. He is a 78-year-old musician who wrote a bunch of songs and just wants to release them. He is not trying to make a record that is on par with Pink Floyd. If you are not interested in it, don’t listen to it! It’s that simple. (This comment is NOT targeted at Bjorn, but instead at other people in the comments).

Agree. I am a Musician myself and I get frustrated when People expect me to maintain a certain style. I even started a side project to vent what my main Listeners don't like. I understand what David is trying to do here and I am enjoying it for what it is and very inspired by his departure from what is expected.

I absolutely agree. What has caught my attention this time is the fact that David is venturing into something different. The two songs we've heard so far is OK but what can you expect from a 78 year old like you say. The fact that he is evolving sonically tells me that he still has an urge to make and record music, which is really rare among older artists these days. There's for sure no money in it. David's living in it. In his life and in his music. He writes and record what feels natural to him. We have a very different approach and expectations because we're fans. We know all the albums and every song and want to hear our heroes make more of the same or hit that nerve once again. Being both a fan and a musician myself I understand that but I think it's wise to adjust any expectation and perhaps listen to new music a little differently than just "oh, this isn't as good as the last one".

@@gilmourishofficial I think it's best to completely ignore which artists made the song/album and just enjoy it for what it is on its own. Steven Wilson has talked about this a couple of times on his podcast The Album Years, saying that we shouldn’t think of certain albums as being a golden age of the band, and everything after that being inferior. With Pink Floyd, Dark Side and Wish You Were Here are my top 2 favorite albums of theirs, but my third favorite is The Division Bell, which was made 20 years later, and had quite a different sound. Music is art, and artists are humans, that make art based on how they feel at that moment. Humans change over time, and so will their art. You just can’t ask artists to repeat themselves. You can’t ask Pink Floyd to make another Dark Side, or Genesis to make another A Trick of the Tail, or Yes to make another Close to the Edge.

It's not that people are approaching this album the wrong way. It's that, obviously, if you like an artist for his work in the past, you are going to expect something similar. People understand that they are not "buying" a banana in the market that you expect to taste like a banana. Artist evolve. But yes, I expect, at least, some kind of similar piece of what made me a fan of that particular artist.In this case, I expect some electric guitar, some delays, some songs in a minor key with a dark sound, some solos. David Gilmour is an "architect of the sound" with his guitar. I would like to listen to some more of that David Gilmour. Specially given that he record an album and tour every ten years or more. Having said that, I've liked both singles so far. But yes, I would like to hear some more of the classic David Gilmour. And I also really like Rattle that lock as an album. But On a island was better.

Hi. I liked this song a lot. The "apathy" of the melody and her voice creates a Mazzy Star mood. It's very intimate and emotional. The lyrics are great. As for Gilmour, he seems laid back, trying not to be too present in the song. The solo is ok, the sound is interesting and kind of unique for Gilmour, but I have to agree that his licks, his bends and phrasing are more of the same. And, although you can''t run away from your style, you can certainly add things or venture into new licks and techniques. This is not the case here. Still, I prefer this song to the first single. That introspective sound is very well made. Cheers from Argentina.

I like this new song more than the first one he released. I think Romany has a really nice voice. Everyone is comparing her to other singers, and for me, she sounds a lot like Dido, who I listened to a lot in the early 2000s. I see in the comments that some people aren't happy with the direction Gilmour is taking, but for me, he's 78 years old and has spent over 50 years entertaining people. I think he's earned the right to make whatever music makes him happy, and if other people like it too then great. If they don't, really they should stop whinging and move on. Plenty of other artists out there, and the complaining isn't going to change anything.

I've read many complaints about the solo on this song being clunky and badly played. I don't think so! I think the solo is very fitting to the song's theme of being insecure, feeling hopeless, sad and left behind. Some of the last few notes are not really in tune, which captures and conveys that feeling very well. Those are my two cents anyway.

I've wanted to thank you for years. I was looking at your site about 15 years ago and I got out of guitars. Now I'm 55 and I built my version of the Gilmour Red Strat with a Floyd Rose and the Black Strat. Added an EMG 81 humbucker to the red one which has the EMG Total Eclipse black pickups and pickguard from DSOTM 50th. Black guitar has an SSL-5 and two SSL-1s. I want a 69 pickup though. When I got back into guitars a few months ago I looked for your site. Still there all these years later and now You Tube. Thank you so much for all the years and I appreciate your work so much. I have a Boss GT6 pedalboard and also use amp modeling with studio speakers in a studio apartment. All of your advice is a blessing man. Thank you so much

I too was hearing the Everything But The Girl vibe from the 1st listen. I love how David curveballs us with a completely "not like him" track as my main criticism of especially Rattle That Lock is its too "him" just all too "safe" and "predictable" so great to hear something that's dare I say stand alone. The solo is ok but like with the 1st single I would have preferred a "fade out" chorus rather than a solo only ending as both singles so far are strong enough to do that. Roll on September.

The Black Cat Strat seems like David's new "signature" axe. I wonder if it has the same pickups or if he's swapped them for anything, because that neck pickup is THICK. I have seen that one of his black Strats got the EMG treatment to replace the Red Strat.

I'm in love with the musical world of Floyd and Gilmour. Sometimes we get exceptional examples, other times not so exceptional ones. But in my case the sufficient condition to enjoy it is to be immersed in that universe. That is more than enough. And my first impression after listening to the two songs is that it will be worth the wait. Unlike you, I loved the solo in Between Two Points. I wouldn't have wanted a grand tone, loaded with too many effect layers. It wouldn't have fit the low density of the song. The plainness of the solo fits perfectly to the overall flow of the song.

I think the tone, although not spectacular, is very fitting for the song. An odd choice to use a fast rotary for something as mellow but there you go. My issue is that he sounds bored and repetitive.
@cuneytguren
@cuneytguren 7 күн бұрын
@@gilmourishofficial My only criticism on/of the solo would be that there is this repetitive, rhythmic phrase ( "A,B,B,A,C,B,A,B - A,B,B,A,C,B,A,B") , something very much like that, if that notation makes any sense, that does not fit into a song about wrong decisions, heartbreaks, etc. It seemed to me to be the result of an autopilot cruise and not pondering what the song means and needs as musical sentences go.

@gilmourishofficial

Well, I don't agree with that. About Face was a product of the record company wanting to groom David as a modern guitar hero, with strong control over the production and promotion. He had an unknown name in 1984 and made some bad decisions. I love that album and era though. Rattle That Lock is a confused attaempt at making a huge sounding Floyd style album and reclaim name you associate with Floyd. I think David was more concerned about what Roger did at the time, rather than making a good album. I went to the tour, saw him several times and thought both he and the band sounded amazing though. To me, his 78 solo album and On an Island are the only two solo albums where David sound relaxed and true to himself. Say what you will about the performance, production etc but he is not a flashy rock star. He has always been more comfortable with keeping things close and intimate. I love those tow albums mainly because they sound like David Gilmour. No one else. That's why I'm now beginning to have hopes for this new album. Based on the two singles, I can hear strong similarities with the 78 solo album and On an Island. A David Gilmour that is true to himself.

Definitely some kind of Leslie going on for the solo. But I disagree that’s on a fast setting. Seems quite slow and not too in your face. Excellent. Not nearly as pronounced as in any colour you like. I like how it builds in dynamic phrase by phrase but then, strangely, instead of keep going up the last few phrases are played more quietly. He almost brings it down. As if they brought the fader down in mixing 😂 Right where he keeps repeating the same note with that syncopated rhythm to it. It would have called for a crescendo to me. That sounds a bit strange listen after listen. Your mileage might vary. But a good relaxed solo and very appropriate for the track. The last notes are almost fragile in their nature when you hear that subtle chromatic descending lick right at the end. And then the song ends with the solo itself instead of a fade out. Interesting

Being totally honest a lot of Gilmour's later solo work is for lack of a better term kind of listless. It's a far cry from his early work in which 'No Way' is my favorite Gilmour tune of all time and is both technically excellent and digs into your soul like that whole album. I thought this tune clearly showed some classic Gilmour, and it's refreshing. There's dark and light here, just like his Wall and earlier work. and it's not hidden under a veil of pretty guitar melodies .His daughter's voice is sublime, and with all due respect it's her song, and that's fine. I'm sure if Richard Wright were still around he would be lending some keyboard strokes. If this kind of stuff is going to be Gilmour's Opus by all means give us more.

It is a phenomenal song to release as a single. He is 78 years old and really is a master at his craft with the fire still to make music. Therefore there are no rules, no formulas except to proceed with feeling. He was probably very eager to share the song he made with his daughter...an awesome reason. Being a cover? No big deal.....there are no formulas. The solo? The tone could be just hot pickups with compression. It sound different though because throughout his career, David has lived mostly on the brdge pickup whereas this solo is neck only.
@gilmourishofficial
@gilmourishofficial 6 күн бұрын
Hard to say what amps he used but there's definitely compression, probably a hint of overdrive and a noticeable rotary effect going on. The dark tone could be anything.... mic placement, amp and pedal settings, EQing in the mix and obviously the fact that he's using the neck pickup.

I believe Bjorn here is giving his opinion based on being a professional guitar player who basically covered the entire guitar work of Gilmour during the years. Therefore I understand he is expecting to be wowed again like the first time he heard DSOTM or Division Bell. I respect that. And obviously that's not the case cause magic seldom happens in life. And Gilmour already gave us all more magic than we can even realize during the last 50 or 60 years. That being said, and with all respect to Bjorn, I completely disagree with his opinion cause simply music is music. Even if you heard the solo licks before that doesn't mean it is not beautiful or not inspiring. Me as a listener (before being a guitar player on any level) i still can hear that its a beautiful solo, with great musical phrases full of Gilmour soul, and even the solo is easy to played on guitar. And i didnt hear new licks in it as Bjorn said. But it totally inspired me still ! ... its a beautiful song (even though it doesnt have gilmour soul to it) and moreover its a beautiful solo.

Well, being a professional musician I totally understand where Gilmour is coming from so in that sense, I don't expect to be wowed. But I did explain in this review and the one that I did for Piper's Call that I'm very much surprised and inspired by the direction he is taking and the production we've heard so far. Music and art is subjective and for me, the solo in this track didn't do anything for me.

I think you cant satisfy everybody. When he releases something groovy and bit lightweight like lets say Today of the Rattle that lock, people take it as its too plain, on an Island too sluggish etc. Overally, objectivally Gilmour does good music, maybe not great, he is seasoned musician and it shows. Some choices that at first I dont like, usually after few listens are growing on me, he got that quality to his sound. Particulary solo on this track I find really good, fitting. I am no guitarist so I dont want to judge it from technical side, it is probably as you say not very challenging or creative. Than again I dont assume that at this age Gilmour will redefine himself as a guitarist
