Devtech Audio Soft Drive, Powerdriver and Gilmour Muff
In this video we'll look at the Soft Drive, Powerdriver and Gilmour Muff from Devtech Audio. The Soft Drive is a take on the Pete Cornish SS2, with a smooth character and a bit of mid range boost. A good blend of the Tube Driver and Tube Screamer. The Powerdriver is based on the late 60s Colorsound Power Boost, with a 18V internal power boost and master volume for increased headroom and a very smooth breakup. The Gilmour Muff is carefully based on David Gilmour's own mid 70s ram's head Big Muff - the pedal that defines Pink Floyd's Animals, The Wall and pretty much everything since then.

Big fan of my man at Devtech! I was one of the first to get the scoop on his pedals here in Australia and I'm still a proud user of the Power Driver 18 & Custom Muff. Half my Gilmour board is Devtech and PastFX. Aussie made FTW!

Hi Bjorn and happy to see you here again! Spectacular tones here; curious to know the way that line voltage at clubs impact this signal chain. BTW, eager for more information about Airbag's 'The Century of the Self' coming 11Apr24. Cheers Bjorn!

Cheers! I rarely have any voltage issues. Maybe the Powerdriver but Muffs and overdrives works fine if you need to change 120-240V. We're releaing a new single April 11 and the album is due in June.

Sound killer, but I absolutely don't need any more pedals. Ive been on a pedal spending spree the past couple months.😂 These Australian companies are putting out some killer pedals tho.

The pedals sound excellent. A tube screamer into a Muff, can get the lead tones, and having the TS gain all the way down, will work as a clean tone. I’d actually go with the Black Arts Toneworks Black Forest(Colorsound circuit with many more features) and Pharaoh(Civil War Muff circuit with 3 clipping options, and in some settings it has volume cleanup like a Fuzz Face. Slam a mid hump OF into it, snd it can get as crazy a Muff tone as one wants. I’d love one of the Butler Tube Drivers, but there’s a lot I need and want, before another drive pedal.

How would you compare the Gilmour Muff to the EHX Rams head clone? I personally have the EHX Rams Head, The large Beaver Triangle, and a Vick Audio V-2 so I think I'm good on Muffs. There are so many Muff clones out there, I'm glad I'm not searching anymore lol. But it sounds great! Also curious how you would compare it to your favorite, the Pig Hoof. Great review!
@gilmourishofficial
@gilmourishofficial 3 ай бұрын
Thanks! It's definitely on the softer side. Compared to the EHX Ram's Head and the Pig Hoof, it may come off as perphas just too soft. But, it depends on what amp you're using it with. I play loud and I run my amps fairly hot, meaning that they're just at the point of breakup. That fits the Gilmour Muff and it opens up. If you listen to live recoridings from the Animals tour and The Wall you can hear that David's Muff tones aren't wild in any way. They're very controlled and you can hear that smooth tone, with a lot of attack. That's excactly what you get from the Gilmour Muff.

@gilmourishofficial very nice. Did you try to stack the muff and powerbooster clones and see what kind of "brew" you can come up with? After all, that's half the fun!

Maybe it's just me but that Gilmour Muff sounded like it had more, 'Marooned', Division Bell tones than Animal and Wall tones.....? Bjørn. Between the Crazy Tube Hi-Power and this Powerdriver, which gets closer to the Colorsound Powerboost in your opinion?
@gilmourishofficial
@gilmourishofficial 3 ай бұрын
They're both great sounding I think. Perhaps the Powerdriver is easier to set up with different pickups and amps, while the HiPower has a bit more of that vintage flavour but we're talking nuances here.

According to the website, the Soft Drive is based on the SS3, not the SS2. Both sound great though. I'll have to build one soon....
@DevTechAudio

Great spot. It is based on the SS3 which had a different tone stack. People found the SS2 tone control to not be as effective as they would like. It really is a great circuit. We also make an SS3 variant called the Skylight which is very similar and includes a germanium and silicon clipping toggle, and an internal trim to increase the gain profile slightly. All the best!

Thank you so much for this video !! In your opinion, does the DevTech Powerdriver sounds better than the CrazyTubeCircuits Hi-Power ?
@gilmourishofficial
@gilmourishofficial 2 ай бұрын
For my set up, yes. As explained in the video, the DevTech has a bit more upper mids and presence, which perhaps makes it sound a tad more modern but also easier to set up with different amps and pedals. The HiTone has a slightly more vintage flavour, with that typical squeeze or bleed when you really crank the gain.

I don't know, I didn't have the same feeling as you. But on all three pedals. She felt all three were too "soft" and had little bite. In my opinion there are better pedals out there, even non-boutique ones, to achieve this purpose. For me,Vick audio,Wren & Cuff Caprid, Buffalo and Past Fx do a better job. Anyway, congratulations on your video, the level is always very high. We missed you.
@DevTechAudio
@DevTechAudio 3 ай бұрын
Hi there, if you are looking for more bite there is plenty of gain and EQ that is available in all the pedals. Our Powerdriver standard (which is a Colorsound Overdriver) has plenty more gain as well. Brett Kingman has run a demo of this one, if that is what you’re looking for. PastFX run some great builds, I agree. Fellow Australian builder. All the best
@gilmourishofficial
@gilmourishofficial 3 ай бұрын
It's a matter of taste. Yes, the Gilmour Muff in particular is on the softer side but so is the Cornish P1 and similar clones like the TopTone DG1. If you listen to David's Muff tones on the Animals tour and The Wall album in particular you can hear that the tone is saturated and it does have a lot of sustain but it's also controlled and not anything near a wild fuzz. I run my amps pretty hot, with the tubes pushed really hard for a slight breakup. This adds to the bite and aggressiveness of these pedals as well but at the same time, makes them easier to control. In comparison, the EHX Ram's Head reissue is too aggressive my my setup.

@@silviolutti1522 I have some of dev tech pedals and they sound great in my opinion. It might of been the settings Mr bjorn had on the pedals and amp that made em sound less “aggressive”. The Gilmour Muff is very smooth to my ear, but when you set the pedal to 70% sustain, 100% volume, 40% tone, you get a very loud bassy wall of sound once you crank the amplifier a bit. With that setting I did the solo for echoes (1972 live at Pompeii). And that’s with no boosting pedal, I haven’t tried to stack yet but I doubt it’s needed for bedroom volumes. The power driver 18 is great too. But I have noticed something with the volume knob of the pedal. The power driver 18 isn’t super loud like the original power boost when you max the volume. It barely boosts the amp volume from what I could hear, and that makes it a great bedroom pedal if you aren’t looking for a super loud boost. At 0% drive and 100% volume the power driver 18 boosts the volume slightly, compared to the power boost which still sounds very loud at 0% drive. But when you crank the drive to 100% and volume to 100%, it gets near identical to the power boost. Very nice fuzz tone. The DSOTM is another great pedal from dev tech. Probably better than a regular fuzz face just on the fact that it has a boost knob. With the boost knob you could reach the volume of the Gilmour muff, but just with a fuzzier sounding distortion instead of the smooth muffled sound of a muff.
@erebus9174
@erebus9174 3 ай бұрын
But there are many different versions of the big muff, and many versions of the rams head. So depending on what the other pedal makers base their rams head clone on, could add to why they sound so different or more aggressive compared to this one. Remember, not all rams heads were made from the same parts in the 70s.
