(11 Apr 2016) DAVID GILMOUR'S 'QUIET LIFE' AT 70 TINKERING IN STUDIO
David Gilmour is on a rare tour right now, but the rock legend says that, when he's back home in the U.K., he's happy to enjoy his "quiet life" tinkering in the studio.
The former Pink Floyd singer and songwriter says he still gets the "tiny little moment of magic" which inspires new musical ideas he works through with his wife, lyricist and writer Polly Samson.
"It can be an external sound or something that you write, create, which tend to sort of pop into your head at strange moments. These days, with the wonderful modern technology, everyone carries a recording studio, a video suite, a communications center in your pocket," Gilmour said. "So everything I do, or that strikes me, I can keep a record of and then go back to and work on later. So there's a lot of mucking about in the studio with tiny little things that appeal to me in one way or another."
As far as listening to music, Gilmour prefers settling down with an album to streaming it and revisiting old artists to exploring new ones.
"I'm constantly waiting for the new Neil Young album or Bob Dylan album," he said. "I was a fan of The Lemonheads, back in the '90s. But there's not too much that inspires me. But that's probably quite the right way it should be. I don't think people are aiming music at people of my generation, and that's fine."
Gilmour is stopping off in New York next week before heading back to Europe for a tour that continues through the summer.
With Samson in tow, Gilmour is appearing at storied sites around the globe to promote his latest solo album, "Rattle That Lock."
"It's fantastic to have someone who so understands me and the way I'm thinking that she knows better than I do what a song that I've been writing and working on is about. Yeah, it's a brilliant thing," Gilmour said of Samson. "She's a brilliant writer."
The musician celebrated his 70th birthday in March.
