(11 Apr 2016) DAVID GILMOUR'S 'QUIET LIFE' AT 70 TINKERING IN STUDIO
David Gilmour is on a rare tour right now, but the rock legend says that, when he's back home in the U.K., he's happy to enjoy his "quiet life" tinkering in the studio.
The former Pink Floyd singer and songwriter says he still gets the "tiny little moment of magic" which inspires new musical ideas he works through with his wife, lyricist and writer Polly Samson.
"It can be an external sound or something that you write, create, which tend to sort of pop into your head at strange moments. These days, with the wonderful modern technology, everyone carries a recording studio, a video suite, a communications center in your pocket," Gilmour said. "So everything I do, or that strikes me, I can keep a record of and then go back to and work on later. So there's a lot of mucking about in the studio with tiny little things that appeal to me in one way or another."
As far as listening to music, Gilmour prefers settling down with an album to streaming it and revisiting old artists to exploring new ones.
"I'm constantly waiting for the new Neil Young album or Bob Dylan album," he said. "I was a fan of The Lemonheads, back in the '90s. But there's not too much that inspires me. But that's probably quite the right way it should be. I don't think people are aiming music at people of my generation, and that's fine."
Gilmour is stopping off in New York next week before heading back to Europe for a tour that continues through the summer.
With Samson in tow, Gilmour is appearing at storied sites around the globe to promote his latest solo album, "Rattle That Lock."
"It's fantastic to have someone who so understands me and the way I'm thinking that she knows better than I do what a song that I've been writing and working on is about. Yeah, it's a brilliant thing," Gilmour said of Samson. "She's a brilliant writer."
The musician celebrated his 70th birthday in March.

There are guitar players in the world that are technically better than David Gilmour but their playing doesn’t have the same effect on me. I don’t have the words to express what Pink Floyd and David’s guitar playing has meant to me. In 1974 my older brother died I was just 14 at the time I was crushed inside and then I heard Pink Floyd’s Time for the first time and it was like that guitar solo reached out and grabbed my soul. That song has been my favorite song from the first time I heard it

@@oris247 Roger Waters was a big part of that creative process, though he did not do it alone. There are reasons the others turned against him. Waters is very negative and I don't blame Gilmour and Mason for not working with him. If Waters wants to live out the rest of his days as a tortured artist, that's his choice, but the others have better things to do than commiserate with him. Gilmour, who is Pink Floyd's best musician, is deservedly happy and does not want Waters bringing him down again.
@oris247
@oris247 3 жыл бұрын
@@ThaiThom Thats highly simplified and unfair. Tortured? He admits that he was very difficult and like all geniuses, he was single minded and focused on getting the job done. Van Gogh wasn't a barrel of fun! The other 3 let him get on with it when it suited them and definitely delivered on the musical front, especially Gilmour, who is the best guitarist ever. But the truth is Waters left in 83/84, forcing Wright, Mason and Gilmour to produce their own solo efforts which were frankly sub-par. Realising that they couldn't succeed on their merits, they (particularly Gilmour) ran back to the PF branding and lo, the public (who frankly didn't know or couldn't care less who was who) lapped it up. Nothing after Waters left comes close to the heights of the 70's and it was Waters angst and anger which drove the quality of the albums sky high. I believe he is a very happy soul nowadays but still can call out the the arseholes who run the world and manipulate us for their own ends. Gilmour, meanwhile creates stunningly sonic but ultimately hollow ditties. He does now acknowledge that 95% of working with Roger was fun, creative and satisfying and that the other 5% shouldn't cloud the overall picture. And waters has said they were effectively close working buddies who have drifted apart. It's not for us, then, to damn either side. I, for one, love them all for their lasting legacy. We agree on that, at least?

I can remember my parents listening to music from the 30’s-50’s and thinking, “why do they listen to that stuff, with all this great music available “? I guess we all gravitate toward the music of our youth and young adult stages. For me.....Rap, HipHop, and whatever they call that noise they play today, is not music. There are no “artists” today....there are “samplers, mimics, technicians, and electronically enhanced voices “, but there are very few real singers and musicians anymore. And the few that are out there are receiving very little notice by the mainstream.

I was perhaps an anomaly, enjoying both my parents' music and my own. Furthermore, there was a fair amount of cultural/musical cross-pollination in our household over the years, with our parents liking some of our music and us liking some of theirs. Case in point: Mom got me into Frank Sinatra, and we turned her on to bands like Queen and Styx. To this day, Sinatra ranks high with me, and Mom's favorite singers include Freddie Mercury and Dennis DeYoung. We actually went to see Dennis DeYoung together around September 2018; I treated her to tickets. She enjoyed the show immensely.

That photographer had better have gotten some pulitzer prize pictures out of this. Here an idea, set up the lighting and shot BEFORE you get David Gilmour to sit there while you dilly dally around with a camera 2 feet from his face. At one point, he had them stand in front of the bright outdoor light, with no reflectors, fill lights or flash. That means either David and Polly were silhouettes or the background would look like a nuclear bomb going off behind them. Pretty sure Gilmour was thinking, "Just get the picture, a$$hole".

She barely sang any of the lyrics, her real voice just popped in a few times throughout the songs. And when she did sing live it was awful. That’s the same with all these modern artists. What a dull photographer capturing dull poses, I wonder how much he’s charging for his boring snaps. I think they would’ve got better results in a photo booth in Asda, and the photo booth doesn’t wear a hat indoors either.

@@RogerMelodicMusic He is a gentleman, no doubt. On the other hand, Roger is a leftist aristocrat, if that makes any sense. Nevertheless I love them both and that's why I can't shut the f.ck up 😐

In another interview he was joking about not going back on tour until this pandemic is over. That's all well and good for you Dave...you've made your money and then some. Imagine if a pandemic had hit the world right when you were releasing "Dark Side of the Moon", you wouldn't have been able to tour the album...maybe Pink Floyd wouldn't have been the monster band it became. Thousands if not millions of musicians are suffering today because of this virus. They have lost their livelihoods. Try to be a bit more grateful for the things you have been able to achieve. Your wife is truly hot though!

It’s all age related. Why risk your health for a tour. Your a long time dead.

Polly Samson is a very attractive woman but the lyrics she writes are usually doggerel. Gilmour's singing voice at the solo Pompeii gig was showing signs of age. DG is aged 70 something now. If he wants to just chilax then let him. He is a most uncomplicated and unremarkable person when interviewed.
