Hi there, Liron here!
And it today's episode of Painting Masters, I'm covering David Howell!
David is an interesting character. You can actually see him in action in this video:
• JUST WATERCOLOUR: Davi...
🎨 NO PENCIL 🎨
What makes him unique in a way is, that he keeps his watercolors "pure", aka using no pencil lines at all.
What he does is create a preparatory sketch and use that as a reference for creating directly with paint.
His style is also very transparent and soft, which is a nice change of pace for me, and from what I'm used to seeing.
🎨 CONCLUSION 🎨
Let me know what you thought of this one. I hope you enjoyed it and maybe even learned something new that will serve you in your art.
I find that exposing myself to different approaches and styles really helps me know what's possible and try new things.
And this is it. I'll see you again soon in another video!
Take care,
- Liron

I like the 3rd painting, it looks like Norfolk, in England, where I live. Flat! The tree is an oak, and the building is a church-tower. At first glance the composition appears simple, but the main elements are almost strategically-placed to move the eye around. It's very useful to analyse artworks, you learn so much. Thanks, Liron ☺

Yes - always a lot of experience is going into these paintings (: It's "invisible" and not obvious because it's that good :D Thank you! So happy you enjoyed 😊🙏🏼

Love the video liron, nicely put together. What a wonderful artist David is, pure atmospheric watercolour at its best. Love the light washes gradually built up and as you say the spared use of darks. Although there's not much white paper left untouched it still captures the light. He loves his granulating colours that work beautifully. Inspiring. Keep up the good work Liron.

I think it's interesting that he doesn't "follow tradition" in softening the edges of the distant trees and hills, or cloud edges. Thank you for sharing his work :)

Yes! I was curious about that too (: As long as the value pushes it back enough, I suppose it doesn't really matter. His style really teaches you that there are many ways of doing this Thank you 😊🙏🏼

Great video Liron, obviously being from the UK a lot of the scenes are recognisable. The ‘swamp’ pic is the Norfolk Broads an inland waterway and the boat with the red sail is probably a place called Pin Mill an often painted scene in Britain. An up and coming artist in New Jersey, Chris Petri may be a good subject for you. He learnt with the great Charles Reid. Thanks again.

This is the best watercolour painter alive for my money. I am obsessed by trying to do this kind of style but add my ink lines to it for an amalgam of styles. Might I also recommend David Howells books on watercolour and oils. He goes into ridiculous detail on every part of the process. Even to entering shows. How to frame your art and what kind of prices to realistically ask. Ps - great video as always my friend.❣️👍🏻

Yo Liron, pretty slick presentation with the split screen. Me likey. Hey @ 16:00 - There's a smaller boat -- a skiff -- in front of the other two. It took me a second to see it.

Hey Liron, I am watching this real late. Believe me bro ... I was really pissed off with the pencil lines and accuracy of drawing at one point and tried portraits without any pencil marks. My first two paintings did not carry the characters of the people I drew. But other paintings really had had the character of the person I was painting. Alas! I can not show you them now as I am very far away from my home and those are at my home. Try it bro. It's divine and rewarding.
