This is one of the first episodes of The Late Show With David Letterman i watched in 2009 and became a fan of Letterman back then

Letterman insisted today that the real target was [Sarah Palins] 18-year-old daughter Bristol. Bristol wasnt at the baseball game. Willow Palin, 14, was.

David Letterman just reads his jokes and doesn't write them. It was her 14 yr old daughter that attended the game....Letterman didn't even know..but he has a responsibility to find out before shooting off such jokes that encourage

Letterman makes me laugh. I'm a Republican. Dave made a joke. Sarah Palin's daughter got knocked up--she is 18 and fair game. If she wanted to avoid this sort of thing, she should have kept a closer lookout on her promiscuous daughter or put her on the pill. That girls life is defined by her past behavior--she has to live with that now.

How about the time Letterman took his son on a tour of DC,when they got home,boy was Harry's ass killing him,and he was only in Barney Franks office for a minute.

They can be argued with, torn down verbally, a war of words perhaps, but speech is free, and to think its ok for people to be punished for it, is a disgrace to the bill of rights, and all freedom loving peoples. I mean, she surely owes THAT contribution at the VERY least to the posterity of the world of Comedy. Do I think the joke was tasteless? Yes. Do I think it was aimed at the 14 year old? No! I am a conservative and I think an apology to the daughter is needed, but thats it. I think anyone who suggest David Letterman should be fired are complete nuts. I know he goes off on the right more than the left, but he has the right to do that. However, this makes me think about Al Sharptons issue with Don Imus and double standard we are dealing with.

So Palin used her younger daughter to divert attention from her older daughter... I find that highly offensive. She should publicly apologise to both her daughters for using them like that.

The 18 year old Bristol was NOT on that trip. It was the 14 year old, Willow. The NEXT night, David Letterman says he was talking about Bristol. But I think he was backpedaling. Why would he be talking about someone who wasn't even there? And, if he was, why didn't he use her name to differentiate? If it was a true mistake, that was one heck of a mistake! Honestly, if someone had made that joke about one of the Obama girls, people would be outraged and disgusted. That's my only point.

Willow didn't get pregnant either. So, we can joke about Willow getting "knocked up" because her sister did??? Hardly seems fair to me.

I would not appreciate such a joke about my own daughter. However, if I was a champion of abstinence only sex education, a Bible thumping hard-right Christian and a prominent politician with an unwed pregnant teenage daughter, I'd have to admit (at least to myself) I had it coming.

I thought this was awful then and it's awful now. You can't say he was talking about the older daughter, she was shown prominently with the younger one at the baseball game at the time. He's just doing damage control and being disingenuous. His laughing response making a joke out of an "apology" just makes it worse. Obvious bias and blatant hypocrisy. Compare this response to the horrified pearl clutching the left did a decade earlier over the "white house dog" joke. Just imagine those jokes being done about Obama's daughters in 2016 when one was 18 and the other 15. The outrage would have exploded.

I thought most had learned from mistakes of the past, that some jokes or comments should just be left unsaid. Mr. Letterman, in my opinion, did cross that line, his "jokes" were made at the expense of a child. It's sad that he chose to take the low road and continue to defend (even repeating the "jokes") instead of taking the high road and sincerely apoligize for his hurtful words. It's a sad commentary on his moral compass that he is willing to put ratings before human empathy.

Letterman needs to apologize. Sarah & Todd have been outstanding parents and they have tried their best to shelter their children from the press and the spotlight. They have taught their children about LIFE and how precious it is (except for animals). We know from experience that the RIGHT religion (or witch doctor) can make all the difference. Ethics are so important too, to the Palins (except when it involves politics) and saying no to sex is the best form of birth control. GOD BLESS

I think the jokes are funny (really funny)... but to expect the Palin's to find the joke funny as well is a stretch... I would never laugh at a sexual joke about my daughter (if I had one) Some jokes are mean spirited, but so what it happens to use all.
