I sparred with David Love back in the late 70s early 80s and he taught me so much as I was amateur. He could slip punches like no other! Such a gentleman!

It means that he beat a lot of fighters from Philadelphia. It reminds me of the greatest boxing nickname that I have ever heard: Jimmy _"The Jew Killer"_ McLarnin

There was a short period of time 1977-78 when David Love could rightfully be considered the best middleweight in the world.

Super footage Rich, Love was one of those enigma boxers which always fascinate me, they really make the fight game unpredictable at times. He had the tools but just not the breaks. Glad to know he ended up with a great family life and putting something back into the fight game training youngsters. Best boxing channel by far.👏🥊

David Love was a very good middleweight fighter. The 4th round KOs he scored against Watts & especially Monroe show how good Love was. Monroe had only lost 3 fights by close decision, and more importantly, had clearly beaten Marvelous Marvin Hagler by decision just 5 months earlier to Love facing him. Love is the man who softened Monroe up for Marvin . Even AFTER Love destroyed Monroe in 4, Marvin took 12 rounds to catch up & finish Monroe!

Excellent video. I think having no amateur career hurt Love. He also would not have been so overmatched early in his career. Skilled as Love was, he might have learned more about training and technique that might have made for a longer career.

Love is enigmatic in the sense that he was obviously very talented and was also hooked up with the right people. Angelo Dundee one of boxing’s greatest trainers…It seems like this guy should have been more than just a dangerous spoiler .. Perhaps it was the complete lack of amateur experience that held him back.
@RichtheFightHistorian22 күн бұрын
Dundee was his manager by proxy. I got the impression Love was more self-taught than anything else.
@stephendeluca447922 күн бұрын
Ironically, I think he did some of his highest level boxing during that Curtis Parker fight. I guess you're not necessarily performing your best just because you knock out your opponent.
At 32 - 21 - ko'ed 11 times, he can't have been that great. I know the record doesn't tell it all, but that's terrible
@dondajulah416824 күн бұрын
I don’t think anyone is calling him “great”, but to get into the ring and come out victorious 32 times is no easy feat. And to go toe to toe with some of the better fighters in that division over the course of a 53 fight career is noteworthy.
@brandon_jo_el24 күн бұрын
After watching his slip, counters, and parrys, I can honestly say that he boxes better than most fighter today.

@jamescook411624 күн бұрын
Did you watch the footage? It is clear that he was a talented fighter. For having no amateur background he did well. He was matched tough from the outset. Not a great fighter, no one is saying that, but judging him on his record is a superficial conclusion.
