@@robinreginald9372 i’m pretty sure he went to East Moline high school. I actually went to John Deere myself and Charlie is four years older than me. I met him through a few boxers from Moline and I used to box at the fire station downtown Moline. I could find out if he went to John Deere, but I don’t think he did. He was more of an East Moline/Silvis guy.

Sad ending for him like so many fringe contenders who just fall short of the title. You could see in the life and death struggle with Escalera that for a brawler, he just didn't have enough of a punch to sustain a career with his style. He hit Alfredo with some vicious shots and despite the ESPN guys yelling many times Escalera was staggered, I didn't think he ever looked hurt in the fight and was dangerous to the very end. Kudos to the Kid for pounding out the win. If you're going to have a windmill style without the punch to take out top contenders, you better live and train like a monk if you want to succeed and last. CB had a moment in the spotlight despite the way he lived and played.

I sparred with brown at the Times Square gym in nyc in 92. I didn’t know much about him. I was a recently crowned NY golden gloves champion and was quite cocky. I was dominating the sparring match until brown caught me with a straight right that floored me at the end of the third round. It was the only time I’d go down in 7 years of boxing.

Back around 1985/1986, my friends and I used to work out at Joe Goosen’s gym. (Ten Goose Boxing). Joe had his gym set up in his backyard, in, I believe, a renovated garage or guesthouse. This was in the San Fernando Valley, in North Hollywood at the time. One of my friends was seriously training in the amateurs and was all set to fight in the golden gloves. He used to routinely spar with all the professionals in Joe’s gym. Michael Nunn, who was about 22 and 0, at that time was training there, before he became Champ. Both of the Ruelas brothers were training there. So were Frankie Duarte and Hector Lopez. Charlie White lightning Brown was also training there. My friend would routinely spar all of these guys and especially Charlie. I met him a few times. Nice guy! Charlie was very very good at that time. He was fighting pro… I don’t know why this was never mentioned in the documentary? One day, Charlie, and my buddy were sparring and Charlie hit him with a right so hard that it knocked him down and out. When my friend came to, he had amnesia for about 20 minutes. He did not know who he was or where he was. He started crying. It scared the shit out of all of us . My friend quit boxing after that. Even back then, Charlie was partying too much. If only he had taken his boxing seriously, he would have been champion. He was that good. RIP Charlie Brown.

I must have just missed you and Charlie by a few years. I moved to Los Angels about 1988 I believe and trained with Pat Goosen , Joe Goosen's brother, and his two sons in Santa Monica. Pat's two sons were great boxers. I don't remember the name of the gym. Orlin Norris trained there with us. I do recall some very hard sparring and going around to different gyms in Los Angles in Pat's beat up old Cadillac. All of us would pile in the car and drive to another gym and spar with fighters from other gyms. It never was sparring though it was more like fighting. Thank you, for your post brought back some fun memories.

@@genki007 Hi Brother, Yeah, them were the days. I’m surprised that Cadillac didn’t break down? lol I knew Pat, as well as some other brothers. I kept hearing that there are/were 10 Goosen Brothers (Ten Goose). But, I never met all of them. I knew PJ. He was a good boxer. I can’t remember his younger brother’s name, but I remember working in the emergency room some years later and he came in and I ended up taking care of him. I asked him how he broke his hand, and he gave me some song and dance. lol I said, “you’re a Goosen!!! I know you got it from fighting and clocking some guy and hitting him wrong.!” He laughed and finally gave in and told me the truth. lol I told him that I know his whole family. He smiled. I told him I boxed under his uncle Joe. I don’t know if you knew this, but many years later, I can’t remember the year, but your old coach, Pat, opened up a gym in the valley. It was on Saticoy about a block and a half east of Balboa. I guess that area is Van Nuys? But I’m not sure? They had a huge opening day and everyone attended. I even got to meet Don the Dragon Wilson there. I would go there periodically. I even saw PJ Fight over there.

@@JohnnyDeMarco-jp8vb I didn't know there were 10 brothers, Wow. Yes, I remember PJ well. Interestingly I never sparred him or his brother. Don't remember PJ's brothers name? Pat was very good to me. I am thinking Pat wanted to protect the relationship we had and that with his two sons. I sparred everyone else and there were a lot of boxers to spar with. I was close to turning pro under Pat but got injured in a motorcycle accident and couldn't train for a year. Ended up moving home back to Hawaii. Had a couple more fights after the injury recovering and called it a day. Would be nice to see Pat again hope his is still alive.

Rich. I am 65 a retired lawyer and once a two time gg finalist. As a young attorney i worked with the state athletic commission for a couple years and remember well the old espn cards from totowa nj ice rink as well as the philly gyms and great AC boxing cards like at the Sands and then at President Trumps casinos and the convention center. I also saw live three of Tysons early fights including Marvis Frazier all from the fourth or fifth row. I remember a lot of the old forgotren ( including some by me) fighters you showcase and have commented before on your videos. What separates your content from the rest is the length of key fights you show and the substantive history you relate from your research. There is one other who comes close- his nam escapes me this moment but hes the "but what do i know" guy. Thanks for your posts. If you havent as yet can you do a Stan Ward some time? I saw him knock out Jeff Merritt with one shot on the undercard of Foreman- Ledoux and will never forget it. Perfect lay back and wait kind of style like a big Tank Davis. If you recall Merrit was featured in I believe Ring or Boxing Illustrated as a real up and comer with a deadly left hook. The shot he was hit with sounded like a tyson body shot. I was impressed with Ward. Little or maybe no amateur experience, maybe 15 or twenty pro fights, well spoken college grad I think then working on his masters. Anyway...may be an interesting story.

I find it interesting that they are referring to Brown's opponent as "old" at 31. They used to age quick in the fight game then. Now, many fighters still seem to be competing at the top level well into their 40s.It's a matter of attitude. Admittedly the smaller weights seem to age quicker because of the speed factor, but I still think at 31 you still have a few years of "prime" left.
@stevefirst151210 күн бұрын
Your right. I think it was because of training practice. We used to spar every day. The headgear and gloves were not well maintained and waterlogged by perspiration making them hard as a rock. Sparring was not tightly controlled and unfortunately the trainers and hangerson in gyms liked the entertainment of heated sparring. I boxed in maybe six different gyms over a ten or so year amateur career in both new York and Philadelphia. Strangely enough given the legends the most control I saw was in a philly gym where George Benton was supervising the sparring.

I'm guessing the reason you haven't done Sam Langford is because there just not enough footage/content around detailing his career or am I wrong?

He did McVey and Cocoa Kid without much footage back then, so I’m sure he could do it, and I would love to He changed the way he produced these mini docs tho, and this new format doesnt fit the older fighter without footage as much as the other one

Great work Rich 👍 I often hear re-occurring names and voices I hear often in your documentaries. To name a few Greg Haugen who seemed like one tough cookie. I also daydream whilst at work and imagine sharing a conversation with the likes of Al Bernstein & Ferdi Pacheco in some spit and sawdust bar somewhere, just to hear the stories and imbibe their knowledge....

Thanks, Ethereal Dreams. Those are some cool daydreams you got there.
