This is the next in our 'David's Choice' series, where Tokyo-based woodblock printmaker David Bull introduces some of his favourite prints. In this episode, Dave introduces the Mokuhankan Collection, the 'museum' of beautiful old Japanese prints that he has gathered over the years.

That comparison between the photo in the book and a proper photo of the print... MY HEART! The one in the book washed away all of the fine detail. That print is STUNNING. Oh my god, my heart is swelling!

I started watching your videos a few years ago to fall asleep to. Boy, what a fool I was. Too interesting to sleep through! I just adore the content. I took a History of Japan class in college, and many art history classes, but none that discussed Japanese art in detail. This channel, I feel, scratches an itch I had to take a course that blended the Japanese history and art history classes together. with the respect and care you treat your craft with, you Sir. have found your calling. I remember a few years back when I first started watching and you met your "idol" for lack of a better term. Then after when he passed and his family giving you those amazingly special treasures - his personal tools. The part about the book photography is so true. I've been in love with m.c.escher's block printing since I was young. When I was around 27 I was able to see his original prints at a show. They were so perfectly done I stared closely at multiple for 30 to 40 mins a piece. For how old they were, they still looked fresh and wet. After the show I went home and looked through my book collection of his work and was shocked at how different they looked. Pieces that I stared at and studied in person were so dull and never jumped out in the book. As an artist living in a digital world these days, I always try to encourage people to come see my work in person. Prints and versions on a computer will never portray the quality of color and contrast in person.

Have just spent some hours with your collection (on a 32" HD monitor. Still not HD enough to keep my back from getting sore leaning into the screen!). Absolutely fantastic and fascinating. As someone who HAS spent hours looking at prints on retail sites, including your own, just as a means to see examples of the artform, this is incredible. As someone who spends a LOT of time down various rabbit holes on "list/gallery" type websites, THANK YOU! I have no idea how many years of life I've lost due to the horrible databasing of museum websites. Most of them have no search options, or at least not ones that are helpful in the SLIGHTEST, no direct linking options, watermarks so obnoxious when intrusive that you can barely see "the thing", pictures taken under AWFUL lighting conditions, nothing in those pictures to indicate or approximate a real life scale or size. I could go on and on, it's actually shocking how poorly done some of these sites are done.

Oh boy, this is gonna be a good one Also, when I found this channel I was going through a tough time with anxiety and always looked for new would-be-passions that provided nothing and increased my cell phone usage. Over the years it got pretty chill, everything is ok now, few subscriptions and I cut all those fake passions But this one, man, I love Dave, I love this channel, and every upload is a gift. Just wanted to let you know that I watch all your videos on my desktop pc, at full 1080p. Always a pleasure watching these videos. I visited your shop about 2 years ago and did a print party. It was an amazing experience, from the woodblock printing to meeting you and getting a peek at the carving bench. I hope I can visit it again one day.
