Dear Anna ❤ So sorry to hear about your breakup. I know you want to remain dignified and generous towards this guy, but don’t overdo it, for your own good... I’m old enough to be your mother and this is exactly what I would tell my daughter if she was in your shoes: 1. Be vigilant of men who claim to like you for being “cool”, “not too emotional”, “independent”, “self-sufficient”… You are indeed a very independent woman and that’s admirable, but in the end a lasting love has nothing to do with independence, but rather the opposite. People in love need each other to feel whole. The fact that this guy is giving you kudos for “being independent” makes me feel he’s priming you before leaving you… Of course, I could be wrong. 2. Beware of men that give a lots of presents. It feels to me this guy was trying to overcompensate for the lack of time spent with you by giving you expensive stuff. It’s a deflection technique as old as time men use to “keep women happy and loved”. Time with him is more important to you than those gifts, but this guy loves that you’re so “cool” not demanding his time… suspicious. 3. This man is obviously too busy right now to find a romantic partner and he seems to have known it for a while now, so why then did he start a relationship with you? I would understand him having hook-ups, because he cannot commit right now. It is suspicious that he lured you into an “official” relationship. It’s just doesn’t sit well with me. 4. Men tend to end up things with a woman in a way that does not paint them in a bad light, and it feels that this guy is doing exactly that here: “it wouldn’t be fair on you” “you’ll end up resenting me” etc. He’s painting himself as a hero who is “sacrificing love” for “his future”… It just doesn’t convince me. He’s giving up the relationship without trying long distance and perhaps failing.
